Following on from White Threads FlossTube #95's showing of one of my first embroideries, today I show you the first Hardanger embroidery that I made, when I was at school. It was huge, and I adapted various elements to suit what I wanted. I also show you what I think was the first Hardanger I designed and had published in a magazine.
Episode notes:
"Traditional Hardanger Embroidery", The Priscilla Publishing Company, 1985, ISBN: 978-0486249063
"Northern Star Hardanger Doily" published in "Embroidery & Cross Stitch Magazine" Volume 6 Number 8, October 2000

I am still around at 80 and still love hanger. The piece I stitched is in a frame displayed in my youngest daughter's house. I love your books and still like to try new styles. My vision holds me back somewhat but it's fun to try. I'm always waiting to see what you're going to do next. Thank you for all the skill and inspiration you brin

I have just learned how to do hardanger, love it, actually love all embroidery. I tried as a child, but too much negativity, and I vowed that when I got older I would try again, therefore, at the age of 63 this was my time to learn, so three years ago, and I just love it all. Handy that at the moment I am somewhat disabled meaning my pain level is so high, but learning embroidery gave me an out and make a negative into a positive. Thankfully I have had both cataract surgeries done and have my eyesight, probably the only thing that works 100%. Keep up the great work and showing your work too.

Enjoy your time with Hardanger. I am glad that you have been able to return to it later in life, as you planned. Best wishes for overcoming your troubles.

White work, pulled thread, hardanger are all of my favorite things to do and I can't believe I just came across your KZbin videos just now, at 83!!!!! Although eyesight is not the same and thus it takes a little more effort, I still love doing this. Thank you for all the inspirations.

Ohh Yvette, thank you for sharing your delightful back story! 🥰 What a lovely opportunity you and your fellow students had to learn and develop your stitching skills back then. It was a colossal project you committed yourself to at such a young age (I’m not sure what age Year 10 relates to here in the UK) but as a fellow perseverator I can understand you setting your self to complete it. 😄 Also an interesting straw in the wind as to where your eventual life path would take you! 😮

Lovely to hear about your start in embroidering and designing Hardanger.

Thanks Lilian. There are many of my early designs that I would prefer not to focus on - I was still finding my way and finding my style. And while I wouldn't design a piece like Northern Star now, I still do like that one.

Thank you. I just employed my father's can-do attitude and got on with it! I don't think it ever occurred to me that I "shouldn't" do one that big!

What fabric would you recommend for making a 50inch square hardanger tablecloth?
@yvettestanton
@yvettestanton 2 жыл бұрын
That depends on so many things! I would advise you to choose a fabric that your eyes can comfortably see. Personally, for me I would use an evenweave linen, as I prefer the look and feel of linen. And then I would choose the count that works for me, so if you're ok with 36 count, use that. Or if you're a 28 count person, use that. Or 25... If you're a 22 count person, it will have a very different look than 36 count, but for something as large as a tablecloth, you need to know you can work all of it without going blind!
