Stitching with a Smile

I am a self taught hardanger stitcher. These videos will show how I stitch hardanger. The methods I use are not necessarily the “right” way to stitch, and could very well be the wrong way, but they work for me and I wanted to share this.
I am an amateur video maker with an older Sony camera and no editing software. I can not pause, re-start, edit out or make any other changes to the video. Please feel free to fast forward or back track.
An excellent book of instruction for Hardanger Embroidery is “Basics and Beyond” by Janice Love. The continuation to this is “Fundamentals Made Fancy”, also by Janice Love.
Some stores I’ve purchased instructions, patterns and materials are:
Nordic Needle in Fargo North Dakota (USA)
Traditional Stitches in Calgary Alberta (Canada)
Gitta’s in Mississauga Ontario (Canada)
If you would like a good basic starter kit for Hardanger Embroidery I would recommend looking at the Nordic Needle website, they have quite a few. Here’s one very basic one -

Good luck and, most importantly, have fun!

It is over twenty years since I last did any hardanger and I had forgotten most of the techniques. Your videos are excellent, I am really enjoying learning from them and I wanted to say thank you for rekindling my interest in this beautiful style of needlework 👏👏👏

+Shaikh Kalim Thank you so much! As for the material, if you are able to order on line Nordic Needle has some good beginners kits. Here's one suggestion which includes everything you need, except the scissors: www.nordicneedle.com/prod/K2168.html Thank you again for your lovely comment!

Hi Nina, I've finished all the dove's eyes and, whilst they look ok, the centre hole seems much smaller than yours. What have i done wrong?
@stitchingwithasmile677
@stitchingwithasmile677 6 жыл бұрын
You've done nothing wrong Dianne! Everyone's dove's eyes will be different, it all depends on how tight or loose you stitch. What you want to aim for is consistency. If you stitch dove's eyes with smaller 'eyes', just try to keep them all looking similar (easier said than done, I'm still working on this!). I hope I was able to help. Thanks so much for following along! Nina

How do I add beads to the Dove's eye. I can't seem to master it.

Hi Claire. I've never added beads to my hardanger but I have added beads to cross stitch. I think to add beads to hardanger you would do it after you finished your hardanger piece, then do the bead work separately. Good luck!

Is it possible to do hardanger with 6 stranded floss or silk? Thanks :)
@stitchingwithasmile677
@stitchingwithasmile677 9 жыл бұрын
+Stitching Joanne I've used one strand of 6 stranded floss to do the needle weaving (in the cut areas) on 25 count or higher, but have never used floss or silk for the satin stitches (kloster blocks, etc). I think it all depends on the look you're going for. If you have a silk for embroidery floss that you like experiment to see what you like. I hope that answers your question. Happy Stitching!

Добрий день! Дуже подобається ваша робота. Розкажіть, будь ласка, як ви робили на червоному зразку, що вийшли не прямі, а напівкруглі лінії. Дякую щиро. Успіхів у вашій праці.

This happened because I'm still very much an amateur stitcher! The red piece was done exactly the same as the brown piece, but I probably was pulling harder that day than when I stitched the brown piece. It's all down to how you pull your thread that will produce different results. Hope that helps!
