American historian and the author of White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America, Nancy Isenberg, calls Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance a peddler of the "self-made man myth." Isenberg criticizes Hilbilly Elegy, the memoir that propelled him to fame, as a deceptive way of selling this myth and the conservative politics it comes with. "Much of what his memoir says tells us nothing about real class conditions," Isenberg says, pointing to her own historical and sociological research on the rural poor in the United States.

As a retired black veteran i can assure you that trash comes in all colors rich or poor, what really makes us great is the ability to see past classes and look into what makes us all human and that's the capacity to reason and decern what's good in us individually.

Well commented. The cursed Caste system in the Hindu faith still dominates in India. Cannot for the life of me understand a human being made of flesh and blood can be inferior or superior especially in the eyes of God. To Dust thou are and to Dust your will return is my motto.

I was raised in a coal patch in SW PA. My mother, a first generation American, was the cleanest housekeeper in the midst of many clean hardworking households. My dad served in the armed forces and neither parent finished high school. They were married for 56 years until my dad’s death. I’m college educated and learned a long time ago not to put people in boxes. Some of the very best people I’ve known in my 70 years came from the humblest beginnings.

There has always been that division: between the "deserving poor" and the "feckless" working class". But that is usually in the eye of the beholder - dissidents, radicals, those who the rulers chose to deport (to the Americas, or Australia). The 'deserving' poor knuckled under, tugged their forelocks and obeyed. You can still see that division when you see the vilification of protestors today - in both our countries. Obey, or adapt is Vance is doing, sing the right song - and you can be accepted, or at least, tolerated.

I grew up the only black kid in the neighborhood for a while in what used to be the rural outskirts of Seattle. Our neighbors were upper middle-class white ultra-religious christians with children the same age as me. They always treated me well and I spent a lot of time at their home. Never did I hear anything from them about race or class as it pertained to me or my family. But when a new white family from rural Colorado moved in on the block who didn't dress as nice, didn't own their home, drove dingy cars and I became friends with their son, everything changed. One day on the bus home from school, my Christian friend started gleeking (spitting) on my new friend from Colorado. After repeated warnings to stop, my Colorado friend caught up to him as we walked home and I had to step between the two so my Christian friend wouldn't get beat up. Later, when I visited my Christian friend, he and his father, questioned me on why I didn't back their son up more and I said because he was spitting on him and he was in the wrong. The Chistian father then told me something that shocked me. He said, "Raw, don't hang out with those people, they are what we call white trash and they're different." After that, I knew I had to choose between my two friends and I chose the new (so-called) white trash kid from Colorado. We remained the best of friends all the way into adulthood and his eventual death. He was the most caring kindhearted man I ever knew.

During the rise of fascism in 1930’s Germany, Hesse tried to tell the German folks that love was greater than hate, but they were too far gone. They drank that Kool Aid . Now, just 80 years later, Americans are swilling the same Kool Aid. The fact it only took one failed grifter to sell that Kool Aid is dismaying. Democracy requires voters with a little bit of education and critical thinking skills. Disturbed voters who allow Fox News to do their thinking for them repeatedly vote for the party which is designed to make their lives more miserable. The GI bill did a lot to lift poor people (mostly whites as it was discriminatory). My father was also dirt poor - grew up in a shack with no indoor plumbing. After his peacetime military service in the early early 60s, he took full advantage of the GI bill to get him through college and business school. Our family was comfortably middle class when I was growing up. My parents even made it to the upper end of middle class after us kids were grown, successfully through school and on our own. Government programs like the GI Bill do work. That little investment allowed my parents and us to contribute to the economy as consumers and tax payers - more than paid for itself.

I'm 80 years old. My dad had to drop out of school in the 8th grade to take care of his siblings. His first job was washing Greyhound buses and making $0.25 an hour. He died a millionaire in 1997 at the age of 84 years old. Somehow by the time I was old enough to walk He had already made a handsome living and provided a wonderful place for us to live. I had loving Christian parents who brought me up in a home of nothing but pure peace. For this reason and many more, it hurts so much at my age to see what children are growing up in today. They're clueless about so many things and it's the parents faults.
@hoovla78
@hoovla78 20 күн бұрын
It's not necessarily the parents fault, it's the system's fault. My family line was successful until my grandfather passed away young. My grandmother was tricked into selling off his hard earned wealth because "a woman can't handle those things". My grandmother became very depressed and struggled as a window to raise 2 daughters without help. Without a patriarchal home structure, my mother was not given the proper support. That's not my mom or my grandmother's fault. Society does not have proper support and forces success to depend on a man running the household. As a result I grew up very poor. I have worked my way out of poverty but continue to see how much harder living in this country is without a man and his boys to help. It's a damn shame and a perspective few acknowledge. Success should not be reserved for men and the rest of us should not have to feel shame because this system was not designed for our success. I'm glad your father was able to retire as a millionaire. I wish my grandfather made it to retirement. Maybe my life would have turned out differently.

This was1996. I will never forget some girls at that mall in DC making fun off me cause I was hollering to my friends to look at something and said "hey yall." He’s even honest enough to say there was a time when he thought he was better than where he’d come from but gained perspective on that as well. We are the wealthiest country in the world with a Capitalist economy. No one is ever saying that you can't make money in America. Americans also get fellated by this idea as well, being the foremost superpower, so it is projected to the world. But the idea that if you put enough elbow grease into something or buy the right stocks or go to college here that you'll eventually end up benefitting from the land of milk and honey as well as anyone is a blatant falsehood. You also have very little knowledge of other Countries clearly, their are other wealthy Democracies and people their romanticize moving here due to things like Hollywood just the same way people here romanticize going to Paris. It's just that no one might tell you that culturally that French people can be pretty brusque and dislike Americans in particular so you may have a skewed view of France. It's the same thing here. It's like you have never been around people in projects or poor areas and seen how they do have no upward momentum regardless of what they try or how hard they try, or seen them held down specifically because the system can be very uncaring for someone who has had one serious instance of bad luck, let alone multiple. The point is, it is neither here nor there. It is neither a lie, what you stated, but it is also not the whole truth. The biggest truth is that America is really great if you come from a more destitute place. Only Xenophobia would have you believe that there aren't a couple billion non destitute people that definitely don't live in the U.S. And for those destitute people only America's self obsession convinces them that there is opportunity here as you seem to believe. Also Many countries in Europe give far better opportunity, like it's so obvious if you look into it for even HALF a second I'm not going to dignify your question that is biased by the usual tripe and 0 research as though you know anything. But sure, look up Sweden and Switzerland. Look up the UK, look up basically any Country around that region. Look at healthcare and schooling and college and food availability and social services for pretty much any of them and come back here and pretend with something stupid like "They pay more taxes" as an end all be all convo. I dare ya to try that typical pitiful deflection. The opportunity here is for really poor people who could improve their standard of living by coming here and the already rich. Everyone else only gets lucky the vast majority of the time. But sure, greatest country in the world because we screwed over a lot of people and then made sure we made enough money through war and arms sales that we could pretend like we're a land of opportunity and not hoarding war mongers. Sure person. Sure. You know nothing.

That's why when ANY Elected Officials form their lips to talk about the people on Welfare who actually need it and them getting paid a lot more than the average welfare recipients, makes me mad! A lot of people doesn't know why these Elected Officials want to do away with welfare! They want it all for themselves! Sad, but true! Damn shame too! GREED! I'm not trying to preach to ya. My grandfather was a poor homesteader that moved from Iowa to Montana in the very early 1900s. He and grandmother were very poor and when they got ahead a little their little local bank failed and the owner-manager left on the train. They lived 30 miles from town (3,000 people). But two of my uncles and one aunt had earned doctorates and all of my grandfather's children were well educated and successful in different ways. Several went to Alaska each year and cut fish 17 hours a day and lived in tents to finance their education at prominent universities. Even us grandchildren were all considered "hillbillies" but we all worked hard and saw the value of education. And we have a considerable achievements to our names. A similar story could be said of the family across the fence from my grandfather's homestead. This idea that there was and is no upward mobility in our country is B.S., often propagated by people who hate American and love class warfare. I am proud to be a hillibilly. I will not be reading Isenberg's book as I find the premise similar to Nietzsche, which I thought was a waste of time years ago. For if it is a testament on commitment towards improving yourself, your family and your intellectual prowess then it is a book that illustrates the similarity that binds us all together, uniquely as Americans, and well worth any time that would have been spent following this You Tube Channel or reading Isenberg's book. I take exception with these Liberal Democrats. I was an abandoned baby adopted by a lower middle class couple. My adopted father was wonderful. My adopted mother tried but she was an alcoholic with very low self worth. My saving grace was a neighbor girl who helped me learn to read when I was 5. The day before I was to start first grade I broke my left arm and didn’t start until the fourth week of First Grade. By then I was probably reading at a fourth grade level so I caught up very quickly. I excelled through High School and got a BSN in College. I joined the Military and retired after 20 plus years in the USAR. I was very lucky because if I had not learned to read early, my life would have been a disaster. My daughter started preschool at 4 years old and was reading when she was 5. Early literacy is the key to quality education and upward mobility! Today in many communities, many children cannot read at grade level. The people running our schools are destroying our educational system by turning out illiterate students and I want to know if it is intentional! Wealthy families send their children to private schools throughout their academic careers! Look it up! Look at what school the children of Democrats in Congress attend!

It is imperative that we do not lose sight of the fact that both class and race are relevant. Look at the number of black individuals who are killed by police, some while sitting in their own homes. Look at the patterns (beliefs, policies, practices, and systems) that persist throughout the nation that are an outbirth of America's history of slavery, Jim Crow, perpetuation of the social construction of race, and enforcement of our very own caste system (see the film, Origin, that was released this year). We cannot negate the prevalence of poverty (rural and urban) and its impact on blacks, whites, and other groups...but, we would be remiss if we fail to acknowledge and deal with the ways in which this nation has deliberately used race to subjugate some groups, while elevating others. One must explore historical patterns and the manner in which even newer European immigrant groups were deliberately elevated above and pitted against blacks in the mid-twentieth century...even though blacks had contributed greatly to the expansion of the American economy (largely for free as slaves) and been here much longer. Even during and after the Great Migration, blacks would see that their skin color mattered more than the length of time they had been in the US. Irish, Italian, Lithuanian, and other immigrants (with lighter skin) took precedence and were deemed better. Let's not fail to acknowledge this, because we cannot correct what we fail to identify. We have a class problem and a race problem in America!

People with money do pass it down to family. Basically. Even when kids falter as youth or disagree, they eventually come back around, inherit and also keep it in the family. Other groups do not ordinarily do this except for old world Asian, and some middle eastern 1st generation families now. It isn't just "white" families with money and wealth. It's generational . Perhaps more lessons in economics and encouragement of family financial srength should be taught to other groups how to help their future descendents,too. Just an idea.
