I saw White Witch somewhere around 1978? It was at a nightclub in Atlantic Beach, NC. I was 15 (this was back when young people could get into clubs under special conditions). They were different from most bands you’d see. It was quite a “show”. Props, costumes, interactions with the audience, light show…it was a spectacle to observe.😊

I bought both albums, when they were first released. I really liked both of them! What surprised me though, besides not "making it", (perhaps due to not being promoted enough by Capricorn Records, was the fact that they were on the Capricorn Label to begin with, a label that usually signed Southern Rock Bands like Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, and the Allmans. Perhaps they would have been more successful had they been on a Label like Columbia, Atlantic, Capitol, or even RCA. I wish they were, because they were really good!

I first heard this song on WJLN Birmingham Alabama's first "album" station. And what a station it was. Begging away "dead air" time of midnight till 5:00 AM every day the original WJLN overnight DJ "Father Tree" played whole album sides. Sides from bands like Mott The Hoople who I'd seen on the sleeve of my CSN&Y 4-Way Street album but had absolutely not idea of who, or what, this band with the crazy name was about. Well, what my sister, eight-years my senior, had started (exposing me to some cool music, sometimes albums her boyfriends were into such as those by Savoy Brown) WJLN, and Father Tree, brought to fruition. Part of this was this song by White Witch which, in a vaudevillian or burlesque flavor, absolutely nailed the dichotomy of the society's "devil's deal" with the alluring aspect of "SMOKING GRASS". The band White Witch deserved so much better than what Capricorn Records was able to give. With a brilliant A&R man who could have matched them with an appropriate producer who knows how much these talented guys could achieve. For instance, SYYX comes to mind....here's a band with a "Broadway Ready Singer", an equaly crunchy rock ability, and maybe more songwriting talent (nothing maudlin in the 2 WW albums). Why did STYX sell millions and is still a "cash-cow" touring band as of 2015 and White Witch is totally forgotten? I blame it on Capricorn Records and Phil Walden's drug addled tunnel vision. Capricorn and Phil should count their blessings that a band such as The Allman Brothers transcended all of the "muck" that swirled around this label. Still, for a time Capricorn had such unbelievable potential. They had bands, besides the Allmans, like Wet Willie, The Marshall Tucker Band, White Witch, Captain Beyond, Grinder Switch, Hydra, and more. They should have had Charlie Daniels and Lynyrd Skynyrd, for instance, but because of their tunnel-vision drug fueled leader Walden failed to capitalize on all the greatness that swirled in their universe.. Well, they did have Martin Mull...hey, I'm not kidding his spoken word comedy and observations were pretty cool at the time.

I saw them twice back in the 70s in Dothan, AL and they were awesome. The first time they were an opener for Argent. White Witch captivated everyone and after a two hour stage changeover, Argent came out and opened with "Hold Your head Up." After that, about 80-90% of the audience got up and left. The next time White Witch was the sould group performing.

White Witch is the first band I ever saw live. Me and2 friends drove to Seminole Florida. At the driving inn movie theater. On the way there we stopped at a convenient store to get something to munch on . I was sitting in the middle of a 1970 Chevy pickup. I placed my PEPSI can I was drinking from on the dash before we went into the store . my sister's boyfriend came out from the store and put a hit of purple microwdot in my PEPSI. I came back to the truck and drank my PEPSI and the driver came out . we drove off and got to the drive in movies. We didn't have tickets so we climbed over the back wall fence. As we walked around waiting for white witch to come on stage. I slowly started to feel funny. Not funny haha but funny looking. I tripped my brains of watching my first live concert. Wow an to be honest I didn't know I was tripping. I didn't fined out until the next day that I was on LSD. WE EXSPERIENED THINGSLIKE CHEECH AND CHONG. DID AT THE DRIVE INNS.ROCK ON WHITE WITCH . I was 14 years old 1973

Was never to big on some of their lyrics, set aside the issue of lyrics a bit. It's easy to poke at old bands. Nowadays, we've instant access, GNU digital audio / video mixing devices easy sampling & copy from the web. In the 60s & 70s, so-called sophisticated synthesizers mixers, dubbing devices were reserved for wealthy producers top & 40 bands. I'm leery about where & for whom I do positive posts. Skeptically I watched White Witch grow, they had good sound, talent, and a lot of imagination.
