NPSJ .... I'm lucky, I'm a pensioner, now retired from going out to work. Becausew of my age, I benefitted from the sacrifice of those men (I would add 'women' as well. Think of the female contribution to the struggles during WW II). However, in my opinion, the efforts and sacrifices made by our forbears is now been squandered, and in a big way. It's got to the point whhere I'm even considering what terminology I use in making comment on a You Tube post ( and that includes naming certain names) for fear of being 'taken down'. I would never knowingly encourage violent protest, but being able to feed a point of view into a topic under discussion is the 'free speech we once enjoyed.

@@joseph9074 really? What do you mean by "get an education"? If you are referring to a University Education, that is very limited and will not provide all the skills needed in our society. We are short of all types of trades people but we channel children down a "one size fits all" Secondary Education system which fails many. It is time we stepped back from an exam only based system and tried to recognise the various skills and talents children have which can be encouraged and developed to help make them feel worthy/successful and not a failure because they cannot get a top grade in the current system. To try to make children feel successful in the exam based system instead of finding alternative pathways they have watered down the exams. Time we valued the jobs people do which make all our lives much better. How often have we heard "if you don't work hard at school you'll end up as a bin man"? Where would we be if no one was prepared to empty our bins - knee high in waste! We need to value these jobs not sneer at them.

Alex thank you. I know not if this will be taken down, but here goes. My Grandfather died on a Trench raid in no mans land in 1917. Left a wife and two kids. My Dad had his sister die in his arms from Diptheria and his mate lost a leg stealing coal off a coal train. Dad left school at 11 to support mum. Got an apprenticeship as a blacksmith then the war. Off in his tank he went. I was born with two brothers in what you would call an Slum. Cold tap only and outside loo. Only ever remember love and simple fun within my mainly Miners community. I joined the RAF and my wife was a Nurse, pay was not much, but like everything else back then it was a meritocracy and you moved on if you were good enough. I know it may sound funny now but, i really believed in the old saying of most soldiers, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it". UK stood for something back then. Now I have no clue. I could go on.. But, thanks Alex you will never know just how right you are. x

I am horrified at what is happening in the UK and N Ireland. My son emigrated to the UK as he felt it was safer and offered more opportunities than South Africa. Funny how things turn out - even though things are not great here, the cost of living, crime, etc, I would love for my son to come back home as at least there is still freedom of speech, one is not fined for swearing in the streets, sending text or voice messages wont land one in jail, walking past a protest wont get you arrested. The new government is so reminiscent of what was happening in Germany just before WW2. Starmer and his henchmen, in the 5 minutes they have been in power, they have broken the UK. This happened in Norway too. The Norwegians in the whole building / construction industry replaced with Poles, which stagnated the payments. The only ones still Norwegian are Plumbers and Electricians. On any project, you'll feel as you are in a foreign country. You get outcompeted by Poles, who work for agencies, who live together several people in one apartment, which makes it cheap. And who are only here to work, hence why they work 10hours a day and then go home 2-3 times a year, for a month. How are we supposed to compete with that

Thank you Alex...you truly speak for the people, for the hurt and betrayal they are now feeling! Another 700 (mainly young men) arrived yesterday, whilst we the taxpayer continue funding their housing, food, health issues, entertainment, whilst ordinary indigenous working classes are struggling for housing, a decent wage, doctors appointments, having to go to food banks to feed their families. I loathe what this Government is doing. We believed that we would get our country back and resume our British values when voting in 2016. What the hell did our brave men fight and die for during the wars!!!!

You've just put everything into words that i've been reflecting on over the past 30 years. Congratulations. I lived through the year long miners strikes where our supermarkets had shopping tollies for us to put food into for the families. I lived through the end of the miners strikes when families lost their homes, marriages fell apart from the stress. The mines still shut and the economical growth that would come didn't. Shame on the govenments past and present for turning their backs on their own people their own country.
