The song is about Phil’s, the vocalist, mother. His mother suffered from Schizophrenia, drug addiction, and alcoholism. She died when he was a teenager. She would see a demon outside and she knew that if she saw it there, then it would be by her bedside that night. She would write cryptic journals and her handwriting would change. The song title came from one of the journals.

You really need to scope out Whitechapel "Hickory Creek". AMAZING. And yes this song is about his mother. She suffered schizophrenia. Hickory Creek also speaks on her, but is far more palatable off the jump. These lyrics are almost straight out of the singer's mother's journal. She literally believed she was a witch fighting against the powers of evil.

I'm impressed with how you guys picked up on the meaning of the song without any research into it. Whitechapel has some of the most honest and vulnerable songs about loss, addiction, depression etc. "Bring Me Home" is another great one about the loss of Phil's father, and "Hickory Creek" is about losing both his parents at a very young age, and his path to getting closure from that. Great writing, clear vocals, and his clean vocals are a nice treat to hear from time to time.

This song is about the lead singers (Phil Bozeman) mom. She had many mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, drug abuse, many multiple personalities, etc. It's also based off her journal, where she would write about a demon she would see by her fireside. The band reported that in the journal is said, if she saw the demon, it would then be by her bed, hence the lyrics: "The demons dance by the fireside . But tonight they migrate to my bedside." It was also said that her handwriting would change constantly. The demon itself was named "Mycar" and would essentially r*pe her while using the physical appearance of Bozeman's father (or stepfather, its one of the two). This song and the album as a whole are both incredibly emotional and go through things that Bozeman has experienced.

Hi guys! You two are really cool to watch discovering music :) I'd have two suggestions, one to go heavier and one lighter : for the lighter one, you should ear Julie Christmas. She's freaking amazing vocally. IMO the best video to see that is "Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas - Mariner - Live at De Kreun" with timecode 17,25, to see the song "The Wreck of S.S. Needle" live. By freaking far my #1 female singer for creativity, passion and psycho delivering. That's really a hidden gem. For the heavier one, go with Frontierer - Molten Larva. Not so growly, but hell... heavy. Oh, and bonus : for lyrics : Counterparts - Solace. The feelings are strongs with this one.

You weren't very far off at all. He IS speaking from his mother's perspective. The lyrics were taken from writings in her journal. She was schizophrenic and addicted to drugs and alcohol. The confusion between schizophrenia and DID is a little frustrating. Schizophrenia is where you usually hear things that aren’t there and in usually rare cases see things. Dissociative identity disorder or what used to be called multiple personality disorder is totally different.
