Oh, man, there would be so many great combinations for that. If Tom were the killer, he'd just sit back silently and let the cops talk themselves into a tizzy. If Rosie were the killer, she'd probably just wade headlong into them and somehow still psych them out because who would actually do that. And if Sully were the killer, he'd probably say "Right, so if I use this boat token now, where can I go?"

Really tempted to buy this as I love playing board games with my dad but I’ve found it’s something he likes to do less and less as I’ve grown older and started to beat him at shit like battleships. I love Whitehall Mystery. It's such a tense game of cooperative deduction as the police, or bluff and escape as Jack. Since introducing it to my family it's become a favorite during game night, even if Jack has yet to win a game, everyone still wants to play as Jack, determined to make a trickier plan than the last player! And that is something I love with the design, at the beginning of the game, the police seem absolutely clueless and their situation hopeless, but as soon as they just find one clue, the net starts closing and Jack who seemed like a ghost, is suddenly just a mortal after all. A mortal who has to escape in a stagecoach just to make it to the next round. Marvellous game and simple enough to play with the family! (If they don't mind the murder theme, of course.) Happy you featured it here!

@RCbeastly3 жыл бұрын
There was another rule that it seems you are breaking - Jack cant shout "I've done it!" as he moves to the final circle - he must wait until the Investigators have moved and investigated. Also, when he makes a special move, he places the move card next to the board aligned with the movement track, so the Investigators can see at which turn the special move was made. This isn't meant to criticise - I didn't know about this game until I watched this video.

I think it's a great game, but to provide a different viewpoint I wanna say this: Most turns players move 3 policemen and check for clues with all of them (because why not). On average, I would say this means checking 4 fields per policeman, so there is a lot of: 56? Nope! 62? No. 63? No. 65? No sir (queue next policemen). This can get tedious and boring quickly, especially in a 2 player game.

One of the first games I played with hidden movement was Stellar Conquest. Technically, your movement wasn't hidden because your pieces were on the board, but flipped over. But the task force pieces could represent any number of ships (including zero), so at least with the people I played with, it was common to send out a bunch of empty task forces to obscure the movement of your actual ships. (The first half of each game plays like multiplayer solitaire though, so I don't recommend it unless you like that kind of game.)

0:58 the balloon bursting was as if you’re a bomb disposal expert who knows that there is a 50/50 chance of the bomb exploding (or not), but you’re expecting it to be a normal bomb but then it blows up and you discover it’s actually a nuclear bomb. Obliterating a city, not just a building. It reminds me of what it must have been like in Jersey in c.2001 when a reasonably handsome teenager’s voice broke and everybody suddenly noticed that it was approximately 394 trillion octaves deeper than anybody else’s. All great fun, but I’m not sure what it has got to do with the board game. :)

I played one game of Letters from Whitechapel as Jack during which I deliberately crossed over my path, went into tiny winding bits of city, and left one of my friends almost screaming when he searched and found clues in every single direction. Eventually the police worked out what street I had to get and surrounded it....only for one of them to get nervous, break the cordon to search, and gift me the win. They vowed never to play Poker with me as I declared I'd won....not realising I was basically drowning in sweat, and a complete bag of nerves. Whitehall Mystery does look like a nicer tighter version of that and I recommend it to anyone with nerves of steel, and a devilish smirk.

Everybody talks down on Letters From Whitechapel using words like "clunky" "longer" "setting up resets" etc, but if you are into strategic thinking where decisions you made earlier impact later phases, Letters is more refined and have more nuance for that type of strategy. I prefer that over the quick cycle fast setup play styles.

I just bought Letters Whitechapel and now I saw this video jajajaaj I hope Whitechapel will be incredibly fun anyways, it's going to be the first hidden movement game for my group of friends. I don't mind setting the board every round, it may slow the game down but add some strategy to it. The only thing that I really would have loved to have in WhiteChapel is the abilities for the police. They are all different in color and their portraits, but gameplay wise they are all the same, and I think that makes more interesting to play with jack rather than with the police.

I searched for more than a year for a SH copy of Fury of Dracula (3rd ed.) while it was out of print and I only played it once. I loved every bit of it and I want it to be my favorite game, but I cant find people willing to play it because there are so many rules and it takes soooo long to explain it. It's absolutely gorgeous and thematic, but too complex for the non gamers i can usually convince to play with. It's also daunting to play with just 2 players, with all the individual powers and phases and... screw you, FFG. Whitehall Mystery, as you presented it, seems like the easier and quicker alternative and I want to give it a go. But it's not in stock anywhere near me 🙁

Yeah, I love the idea of FOD but it is such a big commitment. We played for about two hours before we realized (as Dracula) I had missed the line at the bottom of Spain so I had kind of cheated. It went on for another hour by which time most people had got too fatigued (or too drunk) to care. Rather than heading to Castle Dracula to get healed I purposely got caught just so we could do something else. Another game we played Dracula tried an ambitious play and got caught in about 45 minutes - so you're not even sure if you need to bring a packed lunch with you. I will probably get FOD on Steam and play that way - this looks really good as it just moves faster, maybe even faster and easy than Scotland Yard.

Not as tightly deseigned as Whitehall Mystery, but I REALLY like Nuns on the Run, not at least due to it's silly Theme. My favourite Hidden Movement Game. It is basically The same idea, but reversed: one (or two) players control the Abbot and the Prioress, and upto 6 player control the Novices, who are sneaking around the Monestary trying to steal cake, or brandy, or something. The Guards patrol are patrolling on a fixed path, wich their player chooses, either walkjing and listing, or running, but making ot much noise to hear the novices, only able to deviate from their path when they see or hear one of their mischevious charges. the Novices can also decide how fast they move, and the faster they move, the more noise they make, possibly alerting the Nuns, who might try to chase or corner them. And sicne the game works with sight lines, one knocked over vase might lead to the discovery of quite a few novices, that hid inside the chapel, despite them being silent, and a subsequent benny hil chase thene through the whole monestary.

Quick question. I’ve never played this game so bare with me. Say I’m playing as Jack and I’m standing on space 63 and someone searches for a clue on 63 do I say that’s the space I’m standing on? Or is that only if they say make an arrest?
