Rick Moranis (the actor who played Louis) stars in a movie you would enjoy called Little Shop of Horrors (1986). Bill Murray is also in the movie and plays the character portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the original 1960 version, directed by Roger Corman. The 1986 film is a musical comedic horror movie, so you would need to mute the songs, but it is a blast.

Also, in between the 1960 original, and 1986 film, there was a musical stage play that was the basis of the Rick Moranis film. I've seen them all. Fun fact, they rewrote the ending of the 1986 film after test audience members reacted negatively to Audrey and Seymour being devoured by Audrey II. (The Plant) In the musical play, all the eaten characters appear in a giant puppet as spores to sing the final number, "Don't Feed the Plants".

"How did they even film this in New York!" A short time later and they probably wouldn't have been able to! They had to shut off multiple roads for filming. Fun fact: the famous sci-fi author Isaac Asimov lived around there and was still alive at the time, and visited the Ghostbusters set. Dan Ackroyd and director Ivan Reitman were huge fans and went to meet him, and Asimov swore up a storm at them for blocking traffic so he couldn't get home!

Even more interesting is the story behind filming that scene. When the movie went into production, they didn't realize that someone had made a Ghost Busters TV show in the 70's and owned the name. The studio was fighting over getting the rights to the name throughout production. On the day that they were shooting that scene, Reitman spoke to the studio and they were telling him that they were not willing to spend the money to get the rights to the name Ghostbusters. Reitman held up the phone to the crowd cheering the name and basically forced the studio to either get the rights to the name or waste all the money they spent shooting that scene.

Actually they didn't a LOT of Scenes in nearly every Ghostbusters movie were filmed in LA/Hollywood reason being the Hotel where Slimer shows up in this first movie isn't even in New York in real life its in California same with the restaurant where Tully gets attacked by that 1 hell hound of Gozer's that area isn't located in New York either. Same with Ghostbusters 2 a lot of New York scenes where filmed in California as well.

3:23 I'm not sure how many people pick up on this detail, but Venkman claims that he is "experimenting on the effect of negative reinforcement on esp ability" and the multiple shocks the male student has received as a result managed to figure out what the card's image is without looking at it. Venkman managed to prove how negative reinforcement could possibly awaken esp abilities (according to this film's reality; not 100% certain how scientifically accurate this is), but was primarily focused on flirting with the female student and trying to get a date to truly realize what he inadvertently had done.

I was 8 when this hit theaters. It was so big - all of us at school were JAZZED on it and building proton packs out of cardboard and duct tape and the song was everywhere. The fun part was growing up and finally getting more of the humor. Stranger things was not off base when they had the kids suit up for Halloween.

Regarding creepy jobs, I was an assistant manager at a movie theater for a few years and I hated closing solo both because I had to stay late and because I had to close down the projection booth by myself. And let me tell you, a silent, dimmed projection booth filled with machinery that can easily hide someone, is freaking creepy. Hell, just being in the quiet, empty building by myself could be creepy. The projection booth was just the creepiest part.

I can't overstate how much I love that Venkman is starting to get results in his experiment at the beginning of the movie, and if those results continued to form a solid data set of empirical evidence he could well be on the way to blowing the collective minds of the scientific community. @@StephenCameron That's the US average, but other factors go into it: credit score, where you buy, job security/longevity, etc. In the 70s, a relative bought a house in an inexpensive suburb (at the time), had excellent credit, a secure job where she earned regular raises, and she was able to negotiate better rates because she went through her employer's credit union. She said a lot of people at work and in her neighborhood did that. Full Disclosure: I've never bought property, so I gave the anecdote I remembered about this topic. I guess that's why when 19% was mentioned, there was a comment about negotiating the rate. haha. Also, the average looks to have spiked in the early 80s, but dropped lower each year until now. Which is interesting because everyone houses are too expensive; yet, very low rates... for now. Thank you for your input. I looked up some info because of it

The cop who told them the mayor wanted to see them was played by Reginald VelJohnson, who played Carl Winslow, the dad on Family Matters. Annie Potts, who played the secretary, now plays the grandma on Young Sheldon. Rick Moranis, who played Louis, was in Spaceballs, Little Shop of Horrors & Honey I Shrunk the Kids & its sequels. Reggie VelJohnson was also Bruce Willis’ ally on the ground in Die Hard. In my headcannon, the guy starts out a jail guard in NY just in time for the Gozer invasion thwarted by a team of looney ghost-hunting scientists, so he transfers to LA to put it all behind him, just in time for the Nakatomi Plaza incident with one good cop having a very BAD day! After that he and his family enter witness protection and relocate to Chicago only to move next door to the most annoying neighbor on the planet! Poor guy can’t catch a break!

I remember seeing this at the movies when I was a kid and freaking out when the library ghost turned scary. Glad they didn't go with Dan Aykroyd's original version of the script. His idea was that they were a small team of ghostbusters (of which there were many) in the future fighting ghosts on other planets.

I always loved the fact that Venkman comes off as a sleazy, loudmouth hustler, you tend to forget that his character actually has more academic accolades than anyone. In the books & cartoons, Venkman had 4 doctorates (psychology, parapsychology, sociology and physiology), Egon had 3 (quantum physics, engineering and biochemistry), Stanz had 2 (Paranormal History & Metallurgy), and Zeddmore eventually earns a Masters in Egyptian history.

Everyone thinks the Ghostbusters car is a hearse, in actuality it’s an old ambulance. I think it being a hearse is somewhat poetic, though, but I like that it’s more of an emergency vehicle.

It was marketed by the manufacturer with options available for it to be factory deliverd equiped (or at least ready-to-equip) as either a herse or ambulance. I believe original buyers would have specified which option to go with. I believe other commenters are correct -- the one Dan happened to find for the film had been in service as an ambulance model. Even though I am not a fan of the 2016 ATC movie. Even though they updated to a different car, one of the not so horrible things they did in that movie was that it was a defferent era of old car -- but the same case. A similar type car that was produced to be either a herse or an ambulance.

The thing Venkman is using in her apartment is a "sniffer" device, that takes particle samples from the air. Some spiritual activities are said to be accompanied by specific smells, ozone, etc. Like how Ray in the library said to the guys "Listen! You smell something?"

This movie has such a warm heart. The mean-spirited and ironic sarcasm of so many of todays movies just leaves a 'bad taste'... Let's see how far we can go in depicting suffering. This was so much fun -- seeing members of the SCTV cast (and Sigourney Weaver!) at the top of their game. Plus the most unexpected Big Boss ever -- I laughed so hard in the theater at the Reveal. Yep - this one goes down as a cultural landmark. Great job -- I enjoyed spending time in the 80s with you guys. Keep it up!

The eggs frying on the countertop is actually some very simple but clever practical effects: the carton is presumably opened with a hidden wire - probably hidden behind the carton given how it's placed in shot - but the eggs popping out and frying was apparently achieved by having the tiles the carton is resting on connected to a hotplate underneath.

The vfx is Ghostbusters are groundbreaking for the time, but they ARE a product of their time and were no less difficult to pull off for being made the way they were. But yes, this was a masterclass in blending optical effects and closeup practical work.

So few reactors mention the music in this movie and thanks for noticing it because I adore this film's score and soundtrack. The scene where the ghosts escape containment is set to the song "I Believe It's Magic" and that song sets the tone for that scene perfectly. Honestly, the entire scene terrified me as a 6 year old and the song had a large part in that. I love this film and glad you experienced it for the first time.

it's interesting that you guys try to characterize some of these movies to me. the 80's was probably the peak of the BLOCKBUSTER movies in an age when you had to go to the theater or wait about a year to "catch up" on what you were missing. part of the point of the blockbuster movies is that they were trying to appeal to "the whole family" as well as the widest audience as possible, to maximize profits and get "free advertising" through word of mouth (remembering that most of the information we got was from ads on broadcast TV and newspaper listings). part of the formula of the blockbusters was to try to jam as much stuff in as possible, which is why it became so common to expect there to be some humor, a love interest, action, suspense, etc.

I have to admit I shed a few tears of laughter and and a few from bittersweet nostalgia while watching Ghostbusters After life. I was five years old when I watched the original movie in 1985, and grew up be a fan of everything Ghost busters ,to the point of having clothing emblazoned with the cast of the movie and the cartoons (the real) gostbusters. I have to say there is special vibe to 80's movies .

They are thrown off the Columbia University campus. That is hilarious. The firehouse is a real functioning firestation located in Tribeca, just a few blocks north of the WTC. The apartment building is across from Central Park West where Tavern On the Green restaurant is located.

The background stuff about this film is about as interesting as the film itself. John Belushi was originally supposed to play Peter Venkman, unfortunately he OD'd & died, so the part was re-written for Murray. It's been said off & on through the years that Slimer was put in as an ode to the kinds of characters Belushi tended to play. If I could visit alternate Earths, I'd like to go to the one where Belushi lived to play the Venkman role. Eddie Murphy was supposed to be Winston, but he had scheduling conflicts (He was working on Beverly Hills Cop). The role that Rick Moranis got was originally slated for John Candy, but he wanted to play the character as either a Frenchman or German. Near the end, if you pause it at the right moment, you'll catch a glimpse of a young Ron Jeremy. Lastly, the "marshmallows" over the cast at the end, that was actually shaving cream.

The last time all the actors were together was when they made the Ghostbusters game, not long after Harold Ramis (Egon) passed away which is why they made the new movie focused on that and his family. He also helped write the movies too.

This is my favorite movie of all time! I’m so glad that you guys understood the vibe of this movie I’ve seen too many reactors nowadays try and take it way too seriously and start saying that Peter needed some kind of a redemption story arc because he’s such a jerk without understanding that sometimes you don’t need a story arc sometimes you don’t need a character to develop all you need is fun lighthearted enjoyableness and this movie does that while also introducing lots of elements of horror.

"Total protonic reversal!" exchange from A Very Potter Musical (and of course "Cross the streams" comes up in A Very Potter Sequel during the patronus scene). I have been a "Ghosthead" my whole life. I was about 18 months when this came out, and I recently found out from my Mom that she and my Dad took me to the drive-in theater to see it. I guess I've been a fan longer than I thought. I've had the pleasure of meeting Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Ivan Reitman, William Bryan (designer and suit actor for Stay Puft), Mark Brian Wilson (Slimer suit actor), Steven Tash and Jennifer Runyon (Venkman's students) and Steve Johnson (Slimer designer) over the years.

The card catalog scene was verry visually satisfying. I wonder how many kids these days even know what it is. They disappeared when most libraries went digital around Y2K. For the first half of 1984 $5 was double the minimum wage. So Venkman was actually paying a decent rate for the experiment, at least as far as a starving college student could expect. No more money for operations, but they have 3 arcade machines during the golden age of arcades. When they caught the first ghost (Slimer) they had no idea what they were going to charge for their services. Venkman would come up with a term out of thin air to charge for and Egon was supplying the amounts as signals given as he rubbed his chin, a nice touch. $5000 to get rid of a ghost? Adjusted for inflation that becomes roughly $14,260 although they probably did far greater damage to the hotel so that little green spud cost the hotel a pretty penny. I love that you guys realized how exhausted they must be getting, and the very next scene had them stumbling into the office and hiring Winston without a single question due to their exhaustion. I've always suspected that a 35' long Twinkie, assuming it retains the standard proportions would weigh a LOT more than 600 pounds. So that example of Eagon's has always made me scratch my head, even as a kid. Looking it up today I see that, unsurprisingly, people have done the math and the answer is 53 tons. So, a 500 pound 35' long twinkie would have to be made of a near immaterial substance... maybe ghosts? Is that what Eagon was figuring? If so... wow, although I think it was just a number chosen at random. Glad you guys enjoyed the movie.

Even as a kid I was thinking “maybe they shouldn’t have bought the arcade machines if they were low on cash?” In one of the earlier drafts, Winston is hired before the Sedgewick and uses his former military experience to instruct the other three on how to box Slimer in. In the novel, he’s originally there for a security position.

It was so great growing up in a time when we got classics like this on the regular. ET, Back To The Future, The Goonies, Indiana Jones, and countless others. All these films, including Ghostbusters, are some of the most perfect films ever made. The 80's were the height of fun movies, and they all hold up to this day. Ghostbusters was lightning in a bottle. The sequel is good, but most people were disappointed because it just isn't the same as that first time experience. It is still a lot of fun. Hopefully you react to the very recent, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It's a worthy sequel with lots of heart.

The 2016 remake is not as bad as they say... If you like the actors in it, it has its fun moments (Chris Hemsworth completely killed it as the stunning but airheaded receptionist!) . Sadly, it was just wholly unnecessary. A waste of time, and money. really. Some classics just don't need to be redone -- they are just fine the way they are. I swear, if some yahoo starts talking about a Casablanca remake, somebody's going down! lol

Fun fact, the reveal of Gozer went through several ideas, one of which would be the building's architect Ivo Shandor, as played by Paul Reubens, aka Pee Wee Herman. I can picture that though, perhaps a more deranged version of how he looked in the very beginning of Batman Returns.

Before he he got into acting Rick Moranis was an accountant. So all that tax stuff Tully is spewing was unscripted. The role was intended for the late great John Candy but he did not quite understand the role and it was he that recommended Rick. Mr. Candy starred with Bill and Harold on Stripes. and Played opposite Dan on The Great Outdoors. Some of really funny lines he did was on Rookie of the Year.

Dan Aykroyd who was one of the writers on this movie and played Ray in the film was an avid fan of the supernatural and ghost hunting. So this film was something he had wanted to do for a while. He put the film together with a lot of the people that he knew from working on Saturday Night Live, including writer Harold Ramus, who played Egon. The other two Ghostbusters were supposed to be Eddie Murphy and Jim Belushi, but they were not available. Eddie Murphy had other movies and John Belushi died of a drug overdose.

Ackroyd and Belushi were super close BFFs IRL and did tons together. Akroyd wrote this script with every intention of having his buddy be one of the ghostbusters. Rumor has it that he was at his typewriter working on the script when he he got the call about his Best Friend’s OD As a kind of tribute and a way to still Include him, they modeled the ghost “Slimer” after him (specifically after his character in “Animal House “)

Ghostbusters is that movie that, even if you say blah blah but it's old, you'll love it as the exception of that way of thinking. I don't know how you could not not like it. They sold so many marshmallows that year 🤣. And the build up. Oh you guys are gonna love the sequel. And my favorite part is the montage of ghostly sightings, it's so creative, because I believe that is really how it goes, they're everywhere. ✊ Props to you, James, wishing you could have seen it in the theater, youngens nowadays don't care to see older movies out of theater.

The Proton Packs crossing the streams will create a thermonuclear blast, firing it into the portal will reduce it in the earth dimension. Colliding the four undulating proton streams likely creates collisions that generate anti-protons.

I hope to see the newest one, "Afterlife" on your channel eventually. It's helpful to know going in that Ramis and Murray who used to be great friends had a huge falling out and never spoke for decades until they buried the hatched right before Ramis passed away. "Afterlife" carries some of that weight. Also of note is that Jason Reitman, the son of this movie's director, helmed the newest following in his father's footsteps. Ivan Rietman passed away earlier this year, giving "Afterlife" even more weight.

All of the original principle cast of the cartoon series are phenomenal. Lorenzo (Venkman), Maurice (Spengler), Frank (Stantz), Arsenio (Zeddemore) and Laura (Janine) had so much chemistry together and did all their voice recordings in the same room together as an ensemble. We don't talk about Coulier, though. Ever.

Stay Puft was based on The Pilsbury Doughboy, The Michelin Man, and the Angelus Marshmallow Man (a Canada only product). The art department for the movie had a ton of fun designing him, and apparently Dan Akroyd laughed so hard he nearly fell out of his chair when they put a sailor hat on him (as until that point he’d only been a vague description in his script).

Rick Moranis (Louis) is actually an amazing actor and has starred in awesome movies like, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" {another classic to check out), "Parenthood" with Steve Martin, and "Spaceballs" (which you must absolutely watch!). The actor that plays Egon starred in other movies with Bill Murray, like "Stripes" (also stars a young John Candy), and directed Bill Murray in movies like, "Groundhog Day".
