Just as far as this movie, seeing the Burj Kalifa scene + sandstorm chase scene in IMAX (the proper IMAX with the screen that is the size of a building) was utterly mind blowing. They were filmed with IMAX cameras, so when those scenes occured it expanded to the entire screen. When Cruise started to climb out the window for the first time, oh man the depth was jaw dropping.

So true! TBH, I didn't love the first 2 films and merely liked the 3rd. I loved this one and the one with Cavill, and really liked the ones in between. Ghost P is probably my favorite M.I. for the perfect mix of plot, comedy, and action.

I think this is the best movie of the series. Burj scene is the obvious highlight. Fallout, IMO, is 2nd. I didn't like Rogue Nation that much.

Originally, Ving Rhames was meant to reprise his role as a co-star, but he and the studio could not come to an agreement for his salary and the character was written out of the film. During the actual filming process, the movie wasn't quite turning out how the studio wanted it to be and Christopher McQuarrie (who had previously worked with Cruise as a co-writer on Valkyrie) was brought in to doctor the script. He was shocked to find that Luther had been written out entirely with no mention and that Ethan's wife had died off screen between films and was adamant that they both had to be addressed and included, so he wrote the end scene where you find out her death was faked and Luther was protecting her this whole time. My memory is a little hazy, but I do believe that he also wrote the backstory for Jeremy Renner's character being assigned to watch over her and failing as well. If I am remembering correctly, an original version of the script had the character more ambiguous as to being a possible mole within the IMF... something that had already occurred in the first and third film... or becoming the new lead for the franchise. Either way, his character ended up being more fleshed out and giving a backstory as to why he was there in the re-writes, which was not in the previous drafts. While the third film was (personally) the best up to that point, it brought in less money than the preceding two. Some assumed Cruise's career was on a downturn and Paramount actually dropped a production deal with Cruise and his company and did not have intentions to make another film. When this was originally being developed, word was that Cruise would be written out and replaced with a new character (the rumor was that Jeremy Renner, who has received recent praise for The Hurt Locker and would be co-starring in the upcoming Avengers films would be the new lead). Thus, one of the reasons this movie has a subtitle, rather than calling it M:I-4, if they decided to use it as another reboot rather than a direct continuation. Yet the movie ended up with a much higher critic approval rating than the previous three and making $150 million more than the second film (highest grossing at the time) that it revitalized the series and Cruise' status. Christopher McQuarrie would go on to write and direct the first Jack Reacher film and co-write the excellent Edge of Tomorrow film with Tom Cruise and from his success and their relation together ended up co-writing and directing the fifth M:I film. The success of that lead to him returning to solely write and direct the sixth film and now he's finishing up the seventh and eight films in the series.

I think I'm just realizing why I love these movies so much by watching your guys reaction. Ethan is an absolute beast on his own, there's no denying that. Ethan though has no problem working with a team to get the mission done. He doesn't have that lone wolf mentality. Especially at the 41:02 mark where he literally tells the team he can't do it alone. I love that humility.

I feel like I just have to say this as Finnish person😅: The guy who is playing Wistrom in this movie is called Samuli Edelman and he is from Finland. He also has an Finnish accent on this one. He is quite well known actor and singer in Finland. We Finns are usually very broud if some of us succeed outside of Finland (which can be difficult). So it is a huge thing that a finnish actor is in a big Hollywood movie like this😁. And he even has a important role in it as a bad guy.

There's a video of Matt Damon talking about meeting Tom Cruise in the wake of "Ghost Protocol" coming out and blowing any semblance of movie star cool by geeking out about the Burj Khalifa climbing sequence. It's worth watching but if you can't find it Matt said Tom was only too happy to tell him all about how the stunt happened. As Matt told it, Tom said the first thing he did was find the best safety guy in the business, the absolute top guy to lock the stunt down so it could be done safely. Tom had a meeting with that guy and told him what he wanted to do and the safety guy thought about it for a minute and said there was no way on earth to perform that stunt practically and safely and Tom would be insane to even try it. Matt said that Tom then looked him in the eye and said, "So then I got ANOTHER safety guy...." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'll say it right now, before I watch you watch this, the last 3 films of this franchise are my favorite movie in the franchise. Brad Bird brought a LOT to this series, especially as his first ever live action film. This is the guy that did Iron Giant and The Incredibles. So he gets action and adventure. All the tech breaking goes with the whole idea of them being completely on their own. No IMF, no gadgets, just the 4 of them. It puts the focus onto the team, as Ethan says at the end, the one thing that did work was this team.

0:19 - People don't like 1?? MI1 is still the best MI of them all: I didn't care for 2 and 3 because it took the least interesting thing about MI1 (The final train sequence) and tried to make the whole movies out of it (Or tried to one up it) when everything before the train sequence was pure gold! MI4 is the movie that finally got me back into the MI movie franchise after two disappointing sequels.(Unfortunately, the sequels after that varied in greatness, with some of them trying too much to jump the shark, but overall, MI$ and up are mostly decent sequels)

The first live-action feature by animation legend, Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratoutoulle and The Iron Giant). I saw the midnight show in IMAX and was totally mindblowing. The last blockbuster of 2011 and what a way to end the year. From part 3 onward, these sequels stay fully connected (thanks to J.J. Abrams as producer). From part 4 onward, they utilize more IMAX in their sequences. This one definitely proved that Cruise is one of the best actors to ever do action period. The cast (IMF, villains) was great. Especially with Jeremy Renner being super busy between MI-4 & 5, the MCU and the Bourne franchise. The biggest installment of the franchise at the time. One of the best 4th installments ever made.

Bad Robot. We must discuss Alias, the spy action-drama masterpiece that paved the way for JJ Abrams' blockbuster success with Mission Impossible, Star Trek, etc. The show ran for five seasons on ABC, was critically acclaimed, and its success paved the way for Lost. Both shows were scored by Michael Giacchino. Alias featured amazing guest stars including Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Angela Bassett (Black Panther), Isabella Rosselini (Blue Velvet), Faye Dunaway (Network, Chinatown), Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner), Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Community). Jennifer Garner won a Golden Globe and Bradley Cooper became a huge film star as a result of the show. Alias influenced other spy shows, most notably, The Americans and Cover Affairs. Highly recommend watching it. The cliffhanger endings made me binge the series in a week. The S2 finale features the longest female fight in tv history. Epic.

There isn't supposed to be subtitles on the phone call between the arms dealer and the Russian guy, because your supposed to think the arms dealer is selling Ethan out, when Ethan actually asked him to tell where they are going.

Allow me to defend any plot bumps; sandy areas (specifically deserts) blow microscopic dust inside of everything and most digital equipment fails randomly, the more precise, the more lazers, the more compressors, the more guaranteed random failure.

To me the voice on the phone that tells Hunt his Kremlin mission sounds a lot like the voice that would brief Mr. Incredible before his robot missions in the first Incredibles movie.

Paramount and JJ Abrams should let Brad Bird direct STAR TREK They already worked together in this Mission Impossible movie Seriously, I can't picture anyone more suitable than him for the job

I wish someone would let him do his 1906 film. That was part of the reason he did MI4... to get experience in live action and prove to the studio he could handle it.

What a brilliant sequel this is, the variety of locations, the chemistry of the team, the teamwork itself (some of the best in the franchise) and of course the action! The Burj Khalifa sequence is one of the best acts in the franchise. Sucks that Jeremy Renner couldn't return for Fallout onwards due to his MCU commitments at the time. MI3 is still my favourite but this is right up there too along with Fallout. Brad Bird directed The Incredibles then this, two of my most favourite movies. I believe there was also an obscure Pixar easter egg too here? Entertaining reaction overall!

Every Mission Impossible movie creates such creative set pieces with so much tension - and despite the almost unbelievable technology involved (looking more like magic than science) the audience can grasp it and knows exactly what's going on.

The poisoned ring reminds me of the assassination of Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov in 1978; it's believed someone associated with the Bulgarian Secret Service killed him with Ricin via a pellet gun hidden in an umbrella.

Michael Giacchino has quickly become 1 of my favorite composers as well. I love him almost just as much now as Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL. I love him much more than Danny Elfman. I actually never knew before that he composed for the show Alias, 1 of my all-time favorite tv shows, and Lost (in my top 15 shows). He also composed for some of my favorite movies like The Batman, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek into Darkness, War for the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Jurassic World, Star Trek Beyond (1 of my favorite Star Trek movies of all time), and Doctor Strange. I never knew that he composed for Jupiter Ascending, which I do not consider a great movie, but was still fun and I think was underrated with great music and great visuals.

Thank you guys for enjoying this incredible franchise. Ghost Protocol is what got me into the Mission Impossible series. It was first film that I watched in theaters and so I had to work backwards in order to catch up lol. I agree with you about Mission Impossible having a space within the industry that fans can be a part of away from the superhero culture. You could say that Mission Impossible helped inspire the Marvel franchise to what it is today along with other action franchises such as Fast & Furious and Terminator. As much as I love superhero movies, they can in fact get exhausting if it’s the only thing you’re watching. That’s why I’ll put on a dumb comedy or a low budget action film to take a break from Spider-Man or else he’ll get on my fuckin nerves lol. Y’all are moving very quickly through this franchise and I appreciate that. You’re not wasting time. It only gets better and better from here which is why I’ll be deeply saddened once the Dead Reckoning films release because after that it’s over.

Another entourage spy series, that has a comic feel to it, is RED and RED2. It is highly recommended. They are two of the better non-Die-Hard films that star Bruce Willis. I am excited for the next MI film, that is supposed to be in the works & coming soon.
