Part 2. Super strong stuff from Gibson, specially when his back story comes to life. And the score by Eric Clapton (guitar), David Sanborn (saxophone) and Michael Kamen (strings) is on another level altogether. Saw parts 1 & 2 on the big screen. Damn near took my head off!

most people dont realise that the music is each characters theme tune. The jazz sax is Danny glover and the guitar is Mel Gibson. They play exclusively with each character and is genius. There is also a deleted scene where Riggs takes out a school shooter in the same vein as the jumper which is amazing.

The golden standard of the buddy cop genre. This first installment was from the screenwriter and co-star of Predator, Shane Black. Both films were released a couple months apart. This and the 3 sequels were directed by the late, great Richard Donner. He was prepping to direct part 5. But passed away. Part 5 is suppose to happen with Mel Gibson as director. Who has proven to be an dynamic actor/filmmaker. (Braveheart, Hacksaw Ridge and Apocalypto). The TV series ran for 3 seasons. But it went on a much different path than the movies.

I like to think the doctor (psychologist) and Captain cared for Riggs on their own way. The motherly doctor, and the 'he'll deal with it on his own' father captain. Riggs did admit the captain had a bit of a point, telling Roger the job was the only thing keeping him sane and alive, maybe that's why the doctor was not treated as fairly during the course of the movies. I keep wondering if the doctor was successful in getting Riggs off the job for therapy would actually push him to actually pull the trigger.

Most likely. Riggs was never a danger to anyone, but himself. The job and putting people who WERE a danger to others away, was all he had.

This film only works as well as it does because of Glover & Gibson's on screen chemistry. Plot wise it's not that different from a lot of the movies of it's decade... but the chemistry between the two leads is where the magic is. The 2nd and 3rd films are as good, and expand on the stellar casting. The 4th film is good too, but definitely has a different, more aged, feel.

While still true to some extent today even, I think it was that, back in the 80's, mental health issues were seen as a sign of weakness, A major character flaw. I can imagine that many soldiers, police officers of that era, secretly dealt with ptsd out of fear that revealing it to their superiors may cost them their livelihoods.

"Back in the day nobody took signs of depression or psychiatry (sorry if spelling is wrong) seriously." They literally had a salaried psychiatrist on staff from the 1st film 😑 The FILMS didn't take it seriously and played it off as a comedic gag even though the actually time period actually did. In all likelihood the police covered medical expenses for police officers and therefore psychiatrists were probably mandated by their healthcare insurance providers.

Yep. The difference between good storytelling and bad, is not relying on contrivances. Too many movies make characters that are "difficult" for no actual logical reasons....just so that the story has some added drama or some extra antagonism for our protagonists to fill runtime. I always like it when the "hard ass" boss or a-hole side character is only like that for a scene or two, before coming around in a reasonable amount of time. Too many times directors choose to just make them a-holes for no reason the entire film.
@wolfofthewest8019

James, you are using "parallel" correctly. When two scenes mirror each other in order to emphasize differences, those scenes parallel each other in the same way two mirror placed to reflect each other are placed parallel to each other. Also this movie is *extremely* accurate in the way it portrays typical masculine attitudes towards mental health in the 80s, especially among hyper-masculine institutions like the police. That dismissive, antagonistic attitude towards "head shrinkers" was very common.

Jo Pesci is an excellent addition to the franchise in terms of comic value. I'll say no more on this to avoid spoilers. As we go through the franchise they throw more and more money at each film. Personally I think it works OK and all are enjoyable. When Riggs has his depression in LW1 it adds to the tension and you have the irony that nearly everything he does and says is really funny. This element is reduced in 2, 3 and 4. I think all have enjoyable sub-plots. Not everyone will agree on this. Don't want to give spoilers at this stage.

LW trilogy, Braveheart, and Payback, are why Mel was always my dream cast for Wolverine. He's the only one who brought the legit ferocity, berserker rage, demon voice, and hair, that encapsulates Wolvie. every time i see jackman as wolvie it makes me laugh so hard because he is the least intimating Wolverine ever : P

I noticed that each character has his backing music which represents them, Mel Gibsons character always has an electric guitar playing when he does something extreme or elaborate and Danny Glovers character has saxophone. Once I noticed this it was all I could see and hear throughout the movie lol.

These movies used to be set during Christmas because Christmas used to be a big blockbuster movie premiere time of the year (second only to the summer blockbusters). So they set them at Christmas since that was when you were going to be watching them.

Mr. Joshua was shooting from the hip because in the 80's it was more important to studios to make you can see the actors faces. Rambo movies are the perfect example of that

In my mind, the Lethal Weapon series is on par with the Rush Hour trilogy as the best buddy cop movies. I love how Riggs annoys the hell out of Murtaugh and they still maintain their partner/friendship, same with Lee and Carter. Lol X'DDDD

The Lethal Weapon series is one of the rare franchises where there is not a single bad movie. I absolutely love the first three and the fourth and last was the weakest but still a pretty solid action movie. My personal ranking of the series would be Lethal Weapon 2, then 1, 3 and lastly 4. Also, Shane Black who was one of Arnold's men in the first Predator movie wrote the original script for Lethal Weapon. Joel Silver produced Die Hard and the Lethal Weapon films along with the 48 Hours movies.

Lethal Weapon is like a perfect 10/10 entertainment movie, the way it balances its elements, and the low key great cinematography. Even assessing from a Literary, Artistic viewpoint, the way it handles grieving and mental health, and the building of a new life with new friendship, and the use of old talents and skills to bring forward into a new phase of life, this is a pretty deep look into the human condition. The Die Hards and Lethal Weapons are like movie magic. So many people from every cinema department came together to produce classic movies out of Hollywood holiday blockbusters. I can't possibly choose a favourite one, they've all got their own strengths. They all make me so happy. I want to add the cinema release Mr and Mrs Smith to this list of movie magic. And the film Wanted, while not so comedic, I also find to be action gold. I cackled over Ninetailed's speculation on the personal documentation for a kung fu throw down in the middle of a police action. You're right, it's so unrealistic compared to the rest of the movie... but by that stage, we the audience are so high on everything that's come before, that all I can do is love it.

It's so amazing to hear someone say "I never heard of it" for movies that I consider absolute classics :D I feel old, yet I'm 34. It's just mind boggling to me that someone in the western world hasn't heard of Lethal Weapon. No time in front of a TV for this new gen, I guess.

I have never heard of a situation where the cops will referee a fight between 2 people. It's a brilliant idea and it doesn't surprise me that it exists, I've just never heard of it. I have seen a cop offer that to a couple of kids that I had just graduated high school with. It was the summer after graduation and these 2 guys had been picking at each other for 6 freaking years. They ran in the same circle but they didn't get along at all. Most of the time they avoided one another and it was cool but like I said we all hung out as a group so sometimes they couldn't avoid each other. We were so excited, Because during our senior prom these 2 guys almost got in that fight finally. They held off but in front of everybody they set up this fight for the summer after graduation. People were waiting for it we're like 2 months and by the time it finally happened even the police had heard about it and one of them offered to referee the fight and make sure that neither of the guys got hurt badly or got in trouble for it. Of course we all had our predictions......... My guy lost....☹️
