Can we take a moment to appreciate Jane? I love how they managed to portray her as both competent in her choosen field, but out of her depth when confronted with a completely different world, while also able to adapt eventually. Plus, she and her father have one of the more healthy child/parent relaitonship in Disney movies.

This is why this is my favourite Disney movie ever: a film centred on Tarzan could have easily been all brawn and physical feats, but instead it was about how open Tarzan was to learning from others, accepting someone despite their differences, and having compassion even for your enemies. It's a beautiful message (similar to the message behind Hercules really, another 'brawny' character who was all about the 'size of his heart' being his defining quality)

Funny enough, the least “traditional” Disney movies are some of my favorites, I don’t need full on broadway singing. Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Tarzan don’t have the usual character songs, but I loooooooove the movies almost because they’re different from the norm. The music tells the story so beautifully, without everyone bursting into song every 5 minutes. Love it. Criminally under appreciated.

I like how the branches and environment are cg models, the artists hand paint the models so it still has the painted look (like the clouds on Olympus in Hercules), side note I like how you can visually tell Clayton is the human villain by his coloring (his jacket is the same as Sabors main fur) and the first time we see him the shadows from the treetops on him resemble spots similar to Sabors.

In order to do the vine surfing scenes Disney had to develop a specific cg method to integrate 2d and 3d animation known as Deep Canvas. This same method was later used extensively in Treasure Planet. On a side note, Deep Canvas is particularly expensive and time consuming to use and was one of the reasons the Disney higher ups did not like the Treasure Planet project (which wound up being one of the most expensive animated movies Disney ever released)

Most Disney movies went hard when it came to the soundtrack and Phil Collins understood the assignment. Growing older I grow to understand that Kerchak wasn't as antagonistic as a character as you'd see him from a child's eyes, instead he's a leader who can't afford to show weakness in order to protect the group, but he also has to quietly grieve his beloved son - who he likely watched get mauled by Sabor and spared Kala the sight - while Kala brought in a human, which he seems familiar of their threat, expecting him to treat him like another son. He of course held onto his grudge a long time, but with Tarzan taking the fall for others he inadvertently inflated Kerchak's scapegoating, all the way up until Tarzan kills Sabor. Despite being robbed of revenge for his son, while Tarzan unwittingly avenges his biological parents, Kerchak became more willing to accept Tarzan from there, but then he started hanging around more humans searching for them, he gave Tarzan a responsibility to protect the family and he betrayed that trust and then physically restrained him - diminishing his role as leader - before Clayton then attacked and almost succeeded in kidnapping the entire family group.

Yeah I agree, the music told the story and the characters didn’t need to necessarily sing for you to know who they were about and what the songs were describing. Had so much more emotional impact when the characters are allowed to emote and they don’t have to animate singing for the entire song. Phil Collins really put his heart and soul into those songs and you can just tell. I liked the lead in for You’ll be in my heart, although I wouldn’t have minded if she had sung the entire song I think it was necessary to really focus on not just her relationship with Tarzan but with other creatures of the jungle. I think a lot of the early 2000s disney movies were underappreciated. I love Atlantis, Tarzan, Emperor's New Groove, and Treasure Planet, but these movies do not get the love the Disney Renassaince had. People were complaining about the Disney Princess formula to the point Animaniacs made fun of the formula when Pocahontas came out, but when Disney moved away with it with these movies, they ended up being kind of forgotten.

@@Alphasnowbordergirl Too right. Somehow these movies ended up in the class of movies where if you were a kid when this came out, you probably have fond memories and will defend these movies forever; whereas adults also liked it at the time but weren't nearly as into it as the kids. Every kid I knew loved Tarzan. Everyone in my grade turned The Emperor's New Groove into various memes and catchphrases. Atlantis is really one of those ones where they didn't market it for long enough for people to get hyped about it to go see it and the theater-to-VHS time frame was pretty short for a Disney movie. And the marketing made it look mediocre and paint-by-numbers instead of wildly creative and entertaining. Treasure Planet was also poorly advertised but it caught a second wind with reruns on the Disney Channel. And since it's based on classic literature, a fun English teacher could work it in as part of the "Treasure Island" unit.

The Tarzan soundtrack is HIGHLY underrated. I still listen to the songs in my regular rotation of songs in Amazon Music. Also, a sidenote: they studied Tony Hawk when animating Tarzan's tree surfing.

Personally, I do not understand the gripe with the change in musical format. I think it works just fine. I feel that people were so used to the "broadway" style musicals for the Renaissance (The Little Mermaid- Mulan) but the way the songs are delivered here are still effective to me. This is a Disney film that isn't dialogue heavy. It relies more on the animation to convey emotions. That scene in the trees with Jane where its just their expressions and the instrumental in the background is beautiful, quiet yet and impactful. If they stuck a song in it I feel that it would have ruined the tension.

I think one of the problems that some people may have with the musical numbers in this movie is that, when the movie was in very early production, Disney [the company] asked Phil Collins to do the songs, he got so exited he immediately made a bunch (and even re-recorded them in different languages). Since the film was in early production, the movie was adapted/modified to fit with the song and not the other way around. So the film could have been better/different but ended being forced around the song. *This is what I remembered from a mini documentary "The Making of Tarzan" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4W6mJyIZdqBl6s), but I may be wrong I personally feel that the instrumental score was beautifully done and the songs are nice (not sung by characters but expressing mental states/ mood). However I do wonder what could/ would have been made If Phil Collins made the songs at the "appropriate" time of the film and not as early as he ended up doing.

My fave thing to watch in this movie is tarzans face whenever hes interacting with the other humans. Bc he doesnt speak in the beginning you typically defaults to watching whatever character is talking. But if u watch tarzan its so funny bc despite the fact he cant talk yet and doesnt understand what everyone is saying, the animators did such a good job with his expressions u can see exactly what hea thinking and feeling

Live the animation style, Disney used a mixture of computer and hand drawn animation called deep canvas, to display all the action stunts, Tarzan was Disney's first and last use of that animation technique. No animation studio would experiment with deep canvas technique until about a decade later with the show Attack ON Titan.

I think Clayton may have the scariest Disney villain death. Villains like Frolo and Ursula have more graphic/intense scenes, but I think Clayton’s just screams panic. The music is frantic and wild, the vines make the scene feel claustrophobic, the lighting makes is nightmarish, and Tarzan’s mounting panic as he realizes what Clayton is about to do to himself is chilling. All of that to then end on the silhouette of a hanged man, it’s dark

I just remembered the theory that Jane is Bella's granddaughter. in the scene where she appears the tableware is a reference to beauty and the beast. It was implied that the crockery was inherited by Jane's father. In addition, she wears a yellow dress like Bella's, another reference. So jane's father would be Bella's son and jane her granddaughter.

So glad to see you guys react to this film! Been waiting for it for quite some time ngl! Tarzan was one of the two Renaissance films I didn't see growing up as a kid, which is a shame, but having seen it for the first time as an adult I feel like I have a greater appreciation for it: the animation, the story, the characters. Its become my 2nd favorite Disney film of all time, bumping down Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. I really feel that animation lends itself really well to the story of Tarzan. The animation of him moving through the trees leaves me enthralled; not to mention with animation they can properly showcase the touching bond between Kala and Tarzan that would be harder to do in live action.

What nut doesn't like this movie? This is my second time seeing, the first was 2020, and I loved it! It had everything, even the parts without dialogue, it was so appreciated, screen writers act almost afraid to go without dialogue, and I think it would help a lot of movies to just go for the non verbal approach. This movie had me laughing and getting misty eyed, I hated knowing how many more times I could have seen it, but was too distracted or mentally lazy to pay attention to anything longer than 3 minutes. Not anymore, I'm cleaning out my watch list movie by movie, some gems some junk, but at least I'm watching. 👍. Yay, Lion King 👏 I hope Lady and the Tramp is in your line-up somewhere down the line 😲 and Fox and the Hound. And going by Lilo and Stitch you like Elvis so you'd probably really like Rock-a-doodle, if you haven't seen it. Great reaction, you made a fun movie more fun to re-watch.
