You’re wrong. In the original Novel Quasimodo was the only one that Loved Esmeralda, Phoebus rapes her and Frollo rapes her and kills her ( yes she dies in the novel) and Quasimodo stays with her in her grave, but going back to the main comment, Frollo only wanted her for desire and Phoebus only wanted her for pleasure.

Me too! I like that they didn't because it's nice to show that you don't always get what you want and even though you might love them that doesn't mean they feel the same about you.She showed no signs that she liked him in a romantic way, just friendship. Her and Phoebus already had a connection even before she met Quasimodo. He really saw her as this beautiful, strong woman. Phoebus was also a great guy, he wanted to stop the villagers from assaulting Quseimodo, he too saved her by saying she declared sanctuary, she thought he betrayed her but no that was the only choice he saw in saving her. He also saved that family's life and was proud to die for it. And without his leadership the rest of the villagers probably wouldn't have helped in the end. To me that little girl coming up and embracing him the way she does was exacting what he needed, way more then getting the girl. He got acceptance and finally be part of the town he always wanted to.

A few quick facts: 1) Everyone on the production team assumed this movie would get a PG rating, if not PG-13. When it instead received a G rating, they were incredibly confused and many opted to not let their children see it yet. 2) Alan Menken himself stated that "The Bells of Notre Dame" (the opening song), was the best opening song of his career. 3) The gargoyles are named after the author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame; Victor and Hugo.

But, when they saw the shot of Frollo burning down Paris, the older one said, "That guy has really gone crazy." The younger one said, "Yeah." I remember thinking that if other kids were like these two, they wouldn't be scared of the darker elements and were fully capable of understanding most of what was going on. I was freaked out at the part where the ppl in red cloaks come and chant and frollo says “it’s not my fault”. It was kinda creepy but also cool as a kid and I loved the song so much. But now as an adult I love it so much more and it’s one of Disney’s best villain songs and probably the most darkest Disney song. And it’s just so intense and really shows frollo become even darker with all the symbolism. But As a kid, I didn’t really find frollo that scary, but as an adult I find him to be the most terrifying animated Disney villain.

I feel that Phoebus is soooo underrated. The man rebeled against Frollo, saved innocent people, then changed his allegiance to the right side, he gave Quasimodo credit for what he did because he knew she was important to him. HE SAVED QUASI omg... and he's really funny, he's got the sarcastic comments, he's like a blend of Chandler Bing, Flynn Ryder and Kristoff or something like that, I love him so much he needs more recognition. I love how the animators took the time and effort to make Notre Dame itself a character - not only is it a brilliant tribute to the actual structure and its architecture, but it fits in line with Hugo’s original purpose in the novel. Like…all the (necessary) adaptation changes aside to turn such a book into a Disney film, the core of Hugo’s novel was that he wanted to bring attention to the Notre Dame itself, which at the time had fallen into some disrepair. Hugo spends SO MUCH of the novel describing the cathedral, that he makes it the “hidden” character of the story.

The scene where Frollo accuses Quasimodo of letting Esmeralda go has an example of the classic trope of "Evil cannot comprehend good". Frollo believes that Esmeralda tricked Quasimodo into letting her go, rather than consider that Quasimodo let her go of his own free will.

When I first watched this, I really thought Esmeralda and Quasimodo where going to end up together. But then I heard this description and it all made sense why Esmeralda fell for Phoebus. Frollo viewed her like a witch from hell that could only be redeemed by him. Quasimodo saw her as an angel from heaven, a perfect light. But, Phoebus saw her as a strong, talented, beautiful woman. Phoebus fell in love with her, not this idea he had of her.

So happy you guys watched this one. Frollo is renowned as one of, if not the, best Disney villain ever. It's creepy because of how real he is, compared to some other iconic ones like Jafar, Scar, Maleficent, Ursula. There are hundreds of Frollos out there in the real world, just waiting to find someone to dig their claws in. Also, Hellfire is really the best Disney villain song
@LA_HA
@LA_HA 2 жыл бұрын
Just because they're not human like Frollo (except Jafar), the other villains you named have just as many counterparts out in the real world as Claude Frollo. There are people with power as supposed helpers who crave more power and are willing to step on anyone who gets in their way, like Jafar. There are jealous brothers and relatives, like Scar. Maybe they don't commit premeditated murder, but they're more than willing to be a negative influence in their family members' lives. Vengeful people who've done wrong, but still believe themselves the victim while victimizing others, like Ursula. And people who are willing to do the most damage in exchange for every perceived slight, like Maleficent. Though the levels and situations vary, they're everywhere. I've met more of those types of villains in the form of every day people who look down on everyone else than a hypocritical religious person gone mad. Yes, there are Frollo-types out there and we hear about them now and then. But, in my experience, nowhere Near as much of a pedestrian occurrence as the others

There's always this fun bit of storytelling that Notre Dame is this tangible and physical form of Divinity on Earth. The kings of Israel (the eyes of Notre Dame), the Virgin Mary shown as Queen of Heaven and even the bells itself being these symbols. In the scene where Quasi begins to break the chains holding him in place, all the bells making the sound of tolling, even though no one is actually ringing them, as if Notre Dame herself is yelling in defiance to Frollo. At the very end, the Gargoyle Frollo stands on breaks under him as Frollo quotes Scriptures about smiting the wicked. Then the Gargoyle itself snarls in hid face and the two of them literally fall to a firey demise. Beautiful ststorytelling. Also, I love this movie because it shows that Esmerelda while caring very deeply for Quasimodo, chooses Phoebus because that's where her heart leads. And Quasi respects her wishes enough to only really want her to be happy.

So true! I always loved that touch of the gargoyle snarling at Frollo - it's like the perfect final pay-off to the visuals we see at the start of the film when Frollo feels the eyes of Notre Dame watching him. Without saying any words, just the physical presence of Notre Dame is a stand in for the awesome and mysterious power of whatever it is that is greater than us... mother nature... fate... kharma... God.... whatever greater force you believe is active in this world. In the end, that presence of something greater is once more reminded to Frollo... that yes it did see what he did all those years ago.... it's seen everything he's ever done since and right as he's about to fall to his fiery demise... it reminds him one last time it knows who he is and who he's always been. In that moment, you could argue that gargoyle's face is perhaps what Frollo projects onto it in his mind.... Frollo fears he's about to fall and in that panic... knowing he's about to maybe fall to his death that is when he realises for the first time... with the fear of God in him... oh holy c**p... oh woops... maybe I was wrong all along... in that final moment his belief in and fear of God is proven. He does have a code and a belief in heaven and hell, it's just that he's been totally misguiding himself all this time. It's the best pay-off and comeuppance because he is confronted with his own evil and his terror shows he knows he is wrong... moreover in his final moments he's terrified and finally realises the monster's he's been and... most importantly.. he knows it's too late to change. He's got to reap what's he's sown. So satisyfing!

There’s a version of hellfire in Latin and it’s absolutely terrifying. Nice notice about the capitalized God in the subtitles and the lack of it with the song, its a major theme. Its mainly a song about religious guilt, but it’s also a song about the delusions Frollo has in regards to his actions interwoven with his belief towards everyone else. Everyone is guilty except him and his excuse is that he’s doing God’s work. . It’s a very twisted combo and the duality of it shines in the visuals and the lyrics.

Esmerelda would be my choice. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz had it where their choirs are singing actual Latin. Also in the “Out There” sequence you can see: Belle reading a book, a man carrying the carpet from Aladdin, two men carrying Pumbaa across a stick, and a satellite dish on someone’s house, When Frollo looks up at all of the statues in the opening and at the statue of Mary when the lighting flashes across you see her eyes open, During the song Hellfire a couple of interesting points the robed people are singing "Through My Fault, Through My Fault, Through My Most Grievous Fault" while Frollo is singing "It's not my fault. I'm not to blame." Also when the guard interrupts him with the door opening that is to symbolize Heavenly light shining in showing It's not too late to turn back to God, but Frollo chose to go back towards the fire, This was Mary Wickes last film (the voice of Laverne) she died during production and her replacement took over for the rest of the film.

To add to your point about the Latin in Hellfire and the level of detail in this film in general: The song begins right after Quasimodo rings the bells to begin Mass. We then hear the people chanting the Confiteor (I confess), which comes near the beginning of Mass as a confession of sins and this prayer continues throughout the song (including "through my fault...") and the song ends with Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) which often immediately follows the Confiteor. I just love that the chants in this film are not only actual Latin, but actual prayers that fit the scenes thematically, and are often still used to this day

Frollo is one of the scariest villains in my opinion. Often in these stories, we demonize the characters in animation. Ursula is the obvious villain bc she is an octopus monster. But here we see Frollo as a corrupt public official using his status to persecute the Romani people and anyone who gets in his way. He uses religion as his shield and sword. Frollo enjoys the power he wields and often gets what he wants. All traits of real life villains. The villains in real life aren’t some witch or monster, they could walk among us everyday. Frollo and Quasimodo are juxtaposed against each other in this movie so perfectly. One of Disney’s best films. And super underrated.

It’s possible (maybe) that the reason the subtitles were lower case “g” during the song Hellfire is because Frollo wasn’t talking to the true God, but rather a false one, or perhaps even the devil. He kept thinking he was a righteous man, but he really wasn’t. That might have been a subtle way to suggest that Frollo wasn’t following the one true God.

I think what makes Frollo so chilling, and the best Disney villain, is the fact that he’s doing what he’s doing because he truly believes that it’s the right thing to do. He’s not doing it for power, or misguided love, or greed or selfishness (he displays all these, but it’s clear that that’s not what motivates him), he’s doing it because he is convinced that he holds a moral superiority over the people around him and the he knows the best way to make the city a better place. It’s easy for us, as viewers outside of the world, to see that what he’s doing is wrong, but from his perspective he genuinely believes he has the best interests of the city at heart and has the conviction to do whatever it takes to achieve his vision. That kind of zealotry is terrifying.

I knew yall would love Heaven's Light/Hellfire sequence. One of the best if not the best villain songs from Disney in my opinion on top of it being one of the darkest. It's literally a prayer from a man of the church singing about his lust and how blames this lust on this sinful woman and how he believes he is being judged and the only way for him to be redeemed is to either "purify" the evil by making her his and his "holiness" will purify her or she has to be burned alive, sacrificed to prevent him from feeling those lustful aka sinful thoughts. And it's terrifying because that's real! that's a real belief. It is, thankfully, not a super common belief in most places now but there are still people who think this way. There are still people who think this way in varying degrees and I think, when we look at those degrees, almost all of us have known or seen someone like Frollo. Even in the past couple days there's been viral videos of pastors preaching that all lgbtqa people are devil worshippers who need to be put to death. The fact that Disney allowed itself to represent a critical eye on what purity culture in the church added to power can lead to and that it allowed it's villain song to be a literal prayer about sin, judgement, lust and murder is incredible to me. On top of the song being so good, the voice actor killing the role to perfection AND that artwork playing with shadow and warm vs cold colors.... it's so good.

Fun fact: In the original when Frollo glances at the fire, he sees Esmerelda fully naked which of course Disney had to adapt and make it less noticeable with the use of fire, but in the original, it was fully shown in that area to signify and show how deep Frollo's lust was.

The difference between how Quasimodo and Frollo saw Esmerelda in their ballads was that Quasimodo was stating that "She may or may not love me but either way I will be there for her" like a real friend. Frollo was stating very clearly that if she didn't love him and give up everything for him, she will die. It truly shows the difference between most guys on the internet nowadays. To me this is one if not the best 2D animated movie Disney has made. The Story is amazing and so are the characters (I think Frolo's design is fantastic) and the backgrounds are stunning, the music is also really good. The story in general is more mature than what they usually do and even the fact tha Esmeralda chooses Phoebus over Quasimodo is more realistic and they could have gone the other way just to give him a happy ending but they didn't. There is also the fact that the entire team of animators actually did travel to France to visit the Cathedral to study and sketch the arquitecture firsthand. This movie to me is just epic. Thanks for this video, it's been a while since I watched this movie and I really enjoyed listening to your opinions while the plot unfolded.

Don’t see anyone in here mentioning the INSANE tenor of Paul Kandel (Clopin)!!! The ending note of “Bells of Notre Dame” DESTROYS me every time! What a talent. And a fantastic harlequin character, too. His frame story is so gorgeously done. Frollo is a SUPER interesting villain. One of the best Disney ever created. A judge defined by his absolute assurance in his own righteousness and the moral discarding of literally everyone else. Which, to a lesser extent, we see in real life. Realistic villains are always the scariest. This film has huge themes in regards to the ways Catholicism can be weaponized in the hands of a bad person with too much power, and I love that it doesn’t shy away from that. Stymied by his own lustful feelings, Hellfire is a testament to his inability to blame himself for anything - *of course* it’s the woman’s fault, she must be a witch, tempting him away from god! I always really liked that Esmeralda ended up with Phoebus. It made me really happy that they didn’t fall to the incel-y “plain nerdy guy/main guy Gets The Girl because he is a Nice/Heroic Person” trope, like most films do. Sick of that shit. I was always torn, though, too, because it also re-solidified Disney’s “pretty couples only” rule in the same breath. Still the better outcome, though, imo. Much as we might want Quasi to feel validated as a desirable person, we have to remember that Esmeralda is her own person, and offering friendship/caring for someone is NOT the same as being in love with or attracted to them. She was attracted to Phoebus, and her wishes are to be respected. She’s not an object to be won. Quasi fell in love with (developed a fixation on) the first woman he ever met, and the first person to show him kindness - that’s not healthy, anyway. Making (his first real) friends is a great first step towards integrating with society at large, and he needs time to learn how to separate different kinds of affectionate feelings before he can think about jumping into the dating scene! Very glad the three of them ended this film as comrades. Anyway. Glad you guys watched this one!!! The album has always been one of my FAVORITES EVER. And the themes are well-established. Hugo’s book is SO MUCH darker, I’m honestly impressed they managed to get a loose adaptation pared down to something children can watch 😂

It falls into the 'unforgettable' category for me. Fun story: I work in a primary school and one of the girls I worked with told me her idol is Esmeralda. She told me this by way of explanation after rejecting a boy's marriage proposal. I found this funny 😂 But in all seriousness I love Esmeralda. Her passion for justice and fairness, her kindness, and the strength of her resolve... true Frollo is hardly a desirable option but imagine choosing death by fire. Epic, indeed!

I just recently read the Victor Hugo novel. I honestly wasn’t a fan of it. It has its moments but I found it kinda boring and too long for my taste. Quasimodo and Esmeralda weren’t that likable in the book so when they died I simply didn’t care. Given that the American Disney stage musical is closer to the Hugo novel I didn’t like the American Disney stage musical and I find it to be overrated. I’m more of a fan of the original Berlin Disney stage musical from 1999-2002. I guarantee you had this been brought to America it would’ve gone to Broadway. It’s darker in tone with a PG-13 feel, The Gargoyles are funnier with their humor being toned down and confirmed to be imaginary, Esmeralda dies but given that she’s more likable than she was in the American Disney stage musical and Hugo novel her death is more effective: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roGblIBshreed5Y I like the Gargoyles and fuck Dory In Finding Nemo and I’m not the only who thinks this either according to this: www.deviantart.com/lexoscorp/art/I-Like-The-Gargoyles-And-I-Hate-Dory-968963812

The epilogue says that years later two skeletons were found, a hunchback and a woman who he cradled as he died. When they tried to separate the two skeletons both turned into dust. I actually think Claude Frollo is scarier as a judge than a priest for three reasons. 1. Judges have more authority and power than priests. Priests have no power. Which makes him a more credible threat. 2. Given that Claude Frollo is a religious racist narcissistic sociopath. Making him a priest would be too obvious. 3. This is one of my all time favourite movies, thank you for reacting to it. One of the best parts of this film is that, yes there is a bit of romance, but it's not the focus (like some other movies), because the main focus is acceptance. I believe its been said that the gargoyles were just there for comedy relief, because otherwise the film would have been straight up dark. Also the details on Notre Dame is mostly accurate (one of the stain windows has people from behind the scenes in it) because the creators visited the location

This is my favourite animated movie. I watched it when it came out, and so much of the darkness went over my head. It's only gotten better as an adult. Quasi is best boy.

I feel like Hunchback of Notré Dame is the darkest Disney movie so far and I'm surprised the creators got away with it back then. Still a good movie.

Your analysis of Frollo is on point, that's what makes him one of the worst villians. He is a complex mix of religious and hypocrisy with a good helping of self-righteousness. There are literarily many individuals like him on real life. That's the core of his evil. He is ready to blame everyone but himself for his list and evil. .even God. Next do Prince of Egypt. The best animation period.

I feel like this film was very much ahead of its time. Disney was still very entrenched in the “kids movies” flavor of the Disney renaissance. I would love to see this story revisited now that Disney has a broader range of what they can do with dark themes. My only fear is that they’ll make this a live action remake instead of giving animation another try.

I wonder if Disney would be brave enough to actually remake it more book accurate? “Notre-Dame-de-Paris” is not a very family friendly book after all.

No please, I don't want a remake, I don't want another masterpiece crushed by poor creativity and money making. Let's keep our classic as the masterpiece they are and rather create new stories. There is still so much fairy tales and books that deserve to be adapted! From all around the world!

As far as epic animation goes, Hunchback is some of Disney's best. In films in general, Prince of Egypt is my favorite. It's a masterpiece of a biblical story ❤️

Frollo is one of scariest Disney villians for me because there are men like him out there. Him and Gaston from Beauty And The Beast. He's weirdly atteCted to Esmeralda, but at the same time he wants to hurt her because he's a racist. It's fucked up lol. His song is great though. Def one of my favorite Disney songs.

This is my favourite Disney Movie, traditional of Renaissance Disney was the stunning visuals and amazing songs but we had an amazing side cast in Phoebus, Esmeralda and even jester/narrator Clopin. Quasimodo's among the most human of Disney protagonists as well, and one of the more mature, even when Esmeralda got with Phoebus instead of him he decided to do the right thing, he was still her friend. Among all things though is Judge Claude Frollo, not the most terrifying in terms of showmanship or the supernatural, but still among the most _evil_ of characters Disney has produced, it's how realistic his villainy is that makes him so awful; from corruption of power, racism and distortion of religion to validate his own self-righteousness. It still baffles me that this wasn't a success when it came out, especially when it had themes many other deemed popular movies would do later, particularly Tangled's paternal gaslighting. Sure, the gargoyles can rub people the wrong way and struggle to determine whether they're in Quasimodo's head or not (I feel like they are, he just imagines that they contribute in defending the cathedral), and Victor Hugo would roll in his grave for this adaption, but so would 90% of the authors for the original version of Disney movies, for me this is up there with Prince of Egypt. And we tend to forget, this was 1998

There's an interesting theory that my family and some friends have thought about: the jester is a being of mischief. Idk if he's like Loki or some other mischief god or something, but if you really pay attention to his character, he's interesting. He's the only one from an outsider who knows Quasimodo's origin, he spotted Quasimodo from the crowd and immediately thought, "how can I get him on stage?" the ambush scene/almost execution scene, he knew that was Quasimodo but the whole point was to get Esmeralda out to the stage... By doing a completely abnormal way of getting a specific person's attention... Mischief.
