Describing their software version as 85-90 of the hardware, was a commendable and honest comparison. I like Klanghabitat just for saying that upfront. I think the plugin sounds very good and has easily boosted my Cassiopeia hardware interest. Thanks for the comp.

Indeed both are extremely similar. From the visual, it looks like the hardware unit can be pushed a bit further compared to the plugin? Did you notice if that's the case? I notice the saturation knob on the HU is only at 50%, but on the plugin it looks to be around 80 to 90%? Curious how it fares on both. Thanks! :)

I can see the value of running the bass through the hardware for that extra grittiness.

My brain can't distinguish at this point. Do you prefer the digital one for its portability or the hardware version for its collectibility?
@fhfoodproduct Жыл бұрын
The hardware is out of my budget, but the Cassiopeia and Lyra are excellent mixing tools. Kind of in the same vein as Voxengo Warmifier or other tube emulation plugins. Great interfaces and super useful for subtle saturation. The hardware seems a touch more flexible and has that unpredictability and openness that hardware can be nice for. I'm happy with the software, but really like the way this company presents itself. Hope they have a nice long life in pro audio!

I’m hearing a very close comparison. The plug-in seems to do something a little bit differently with the mids and the highs, but it’s very subtle.
@Brutuscomedy Жыл бұрын
The hardware sounds good but when it comes to a plugin, I'd rather have multiband capability. I don't necessarily wish to saturate the entire frequency spectrum in many instances. Also, the hardware only contains ONE tube. I would very much rather have more and the push-pull effect of pre and power tubes is pretty awesome. A guitar amp, for example, with only one tube in the pre section just ain't near the same as something more equipped and powerful.

White Sea Studio, the hardware has a slight *asymmetry to its sound. The software sounds so monotonous. Is that typical from your experience? Asymmetry: not predictable in timing or in saturation.
@palsheldon6520 Жыл бұрын
Seems to me that the hardware is more effortless, top end seems sweeter in the hardware

They sounded different and I agree that the plugin sounds cleaner. Yes, there is a difference in sound, but not one that has to be there. There are no magic fairies involved!
@matt_nyc_audioengineer Жыл бұрын
Actually if you wanted it to be the most "fair". You should have turned the color to 10. If you leave it on the default (all the way left) there is actually about a 4.5dB roll-off starting at like 500Hz! If you turn it up all the way there is about a .5dB bump starting at about 2k. It's pretty interesting! You can see this behavior on the linear analysis in Plugin Doctor. Still a great video! They sound pretty similar.
@Whiteseastudio Жыл бұрын
Linear analysis on a non linear system?
@matt_nyc_audioengineer Жыл бұрын
Well, yes harmonics can break plugin doctor but I don't think that's what's happening here. There was no saturation happening when I noticed the behavior. The plugin was off except for intensity (mix) and the color knob. You are correct tho, the saturation could technically break the reading. 🙂 I hope you don't think my comment was disrespectful in any way. It certainly wasn't intended to be so. I was just letting you know what I've noticed. I've had the plugin for quite some time. I don't use it that often anymore. I use Freqtube mostly now when I want tube saturation. Was just trying to be helpful. @@Whiteseastudio

Why not use a reamp box and a stomp box for distortion? This would be more practical if it were stereo, unless it is?

It is indeed stereo I had to look it up myself also. They do make a mono version as well.

A compressor? Are you referring to it's ability to drive the tube? Otherwise why compare a distortion unit to a dedicated compressor?

It's all about marketing. Making people beleive hardware is better will reflect on people (mostly DJs and bedroom producas) that it is. Truth is.......in most cases it is not. And since there is not much money to be made in music than it's easy to understand why most mixers are ITB. To make it short : HW is for rich hipsters and plugins are for business mixers.

Why? Why ?? Why does reviewers feel the need to crank the unit's settings so hard? I understand the "we want you to hear the sound of the box and be sure it gets through youtube compression", but man this review is so not useful for actual people who wants to buy the unit/plugin and have no way demoing it. Is it too complicated to review a unit as it was entended to be used with normal settings in a normal session so that subscribers can be able to assess the actual magic/value of those tubes ?

Just buy old cheap consumer EQ devices i would say, i think that will fit your studio at best in this, just use a direct out for the input and there you have your dry and wet knobs. Why pay mutch money for so called proffesional THD generating plug-ins or hardware versions ? THD = THD and dirt is dirt, so whats the problem ? EQ solves some colouration in this suggested set-up as well i think. Or just play signal through some long aluminium foils, or some pencels. Maybe a bike in the hall with some 220 wires will help also. But anyway, why put effort in this stuff at the first place ? just buy old equipment, there is enough of it in secondhand shops, dont emulate it, why ? If your Neumann sounds to neutral, just dont connect it !!!! why ? For god sake ! (the best sounding THD device ? man........ are you awake my friend, hahahahaha)
