Trevor was such an incredible influence on what I find funny. This was always my favourite sketch. Something about the absurdism of gaslightning somebody into thinking they're the weird one in such an odd scenario always tickled me. You'll always be missed Trev. RIP.

it's genuinely an amazing legal question. Is the waiter at all liable? he told him it was tar toast, but food terms are often based on real things (ants on a log, etc) and he is in an easily recognizable uniform. Is the act of being dressed as a waiter and carrying a tray itself illegal? is it a tort? I need some legal expertise

​@@NathanLucas5 yes, a competent person would reasonably assume a person dressed as a member of the wait staff holding a tray of food items in that posture is serving food to guests. When Trevor's character answers the question of what's on the tray with a direct answer and no follow-up, it would be deemed reasonable by a guest at the party to assume there is no danger and that the food is being served to them. I think this would bode very poorly for the VP if this were a real event that went to trial

@@NathanLucas5 Honestly itd really come down to what his intent with the "tar toast" was and why he had it in the first place. In this video for comedic effect they are clearly dressed the exact same as the staff, as right before the tar toast waiter comes up, a real (I assume?) waiter walks up in the exact same outfit down to the exact same serving tray but with edible food. Since the "street tar" is placed on edible food which is also being served on the exact same trays, unless they had a good excuse for having tar on food, the victim would probably have an easy time getting compensation In this specific case they would probably be charged with at least criminal negligence, which means "an accused has not actually foreseen the potentially adverse consequences to the planned actions, and has gone ahead, exposing a particular individual or unknown victim to the risk of suffering injury or loss. The accused is a social danger because they have endangered the safety of others in circumstances where the reasonable person would have foreseen the injury and taken preventive measure" (from wikipedia)

What's great about this sketch is, despite the weird premise, the characters actually feel super normal and realistic. Not like typical comedy characters, and especially not like typical WKUK characters. It feels like there is an actual explanation as to why that guy was carrying around tar toast and that it wasn't just random.
