Number 10 Tree; Tip; Having a random spruce in the hardwoods with branches to the ground is a good thing. Twice in my life I have witnessed does crawling underneath a spruce tree that had branches all the way to the ground and I could not see them from just a few feet away. Another great video.

Another great informational video Jeff! One tree I don’t hear you mention is ash. Specifically white ash. On my northern Wisconsin property we don’t have box elder but lots of ash. It seems like this is one of their preferred browse species. They also hinge cut greatly and are very prolific at sending out new shoots.

Never knew deer like black locust seed pods. During my post season walk found areas around black locusts trees where they have been hitting them hard (more than my turnips). Have a lot of river birch trees on my property, don't seem to be much wildlife value as far as food. Time to get the saw out. Very good content Jeff. Always getting new ideas.

Wow Jeff You have so much info and knowledge it’s like brain overload!! Been feeding deer from the start. Just doing a mix of whole shell and cracked corn. I have it in gravity feeders so there is feed present all the time which feeds everything from turkeys, squirrels birds coons and the target whitetail. I’m buying trees for both ascetics and wildlife. So when I plant spice and pine should I plant them in groves of similar species or dispersed randomly?? So many questions just want to benefit the wildlife as I bring on privacy and screening Planning switch, forage, and screening all at the same time. Wish I could pick your brain for about an hour or two??

Great video. I see birch isnt on the list. I have a couple of 15 year old clear cuts that seem like the birch became the dominant tree. I have been slowly thinning them out as they have not been helping as good browse or deer bedding but should I be planting these areas with something else as i get some open pockets? They grow thin and tall, tried hingeing some but they are as you say pretty brittle.

Jeff, I have an interesting one for you. Paulownia, or empress splendor. My dad and I work with a company called World Tree to grow these trees in north Florida. I’m in the second year of growing them and the deer absolutely love them, so much to the point that I have had to fence them off individually. We grow them to be tall and straight but it would be incredibly easy to keep them short and bushy. Plus they are incredibly hard to kill and really respond fast to being browsed by deer. Realistically you could cut them down every year and they would start regrowing lots of new shoots from the stump.

I wouldn’t waste your money on persimmons that far north - unlikely you’ll get fruit to mature if they survive the cold. Depending on how far north, you might have luck with nurseries you that way that have grafted varieties proven to produce up there (Morse nursery is one I know, but I think where they are in Michigan is plenty south and they’ve only had a variety or two do well). Hope that helps. I know some guys that have had horrible luck with persimmons in NE Iowa so can’t imagine NW WI would fare better

I tried two years. First year mostly a bust as I just stuck them in the ground. They leafed out at first and did great, but as summer wore on they all died off except one. The soil got dry I assume and roots died. Second year I cut in spring, treated with rooting hormone and stuck them in pots filled with sand, and set the pots in a bin and kept inche of water in bottom of bin which sand could pull up through holes in bottom of pots. Keeping that sand moist all summer made the difference and had 100% success and out-planted last fall and hope they do well.

Hi Jeff, I have been doing a good amount of research on chestnut trees. Do you recommend Dunstan variety or Chinese? I just worry about disease and blight. Thanks!!
@carsonschulz6498
@carsonschulz6498 2 жыл бұрын
There’s really not a huge difference between them - Dunstan has a lot of Chinese in its cross breeding. If you want Dunstans for a lot cheaper than Walmart/Chestnut Hill you can get seeds from Chestnut Ridge of Pike County. I grow about 25 a year (could get 40-50 if I tended them better) for the price of one nursery tree. If you have old American chestnut stragglers that have blight in your area, definitely stay away from growing American chestnuts but Chinese/Dunstans are both fine. I have both on my place in Eastern KS, caging them, keeping weeds around them to a minimum, fertilizing and most importantly not planting them in wet areas is the most important so far. Most of the WM/Chestnut Hills I planted were weaker being grown tightly against a tall stake - either would snap off or die back to the stump but putting a 5/6ft tube on the stump sprouts saved most and they shot back up. Frustrating in the first years since they don’t grow very fast until their roots get established. Hope that helps. Deer will eat them to death if allowed, only thing I’ve found they will get at before them are apple and pear trees. Hoping once they hit 10 years I can remove any protection besides something like chicken wire to stop rubbing but at 5yrs I’m starting to get chestnuts on them

A deer yard in Michigans Upper Pennisula is usually a thick white Cedar swamp that deer will migrate to some times many miles when snow depth signals them to leave fall habitat and seek out thermal protection and browse.Many times the areas they occupy in fall will get 100" or more snow depth over the winter.Those yards will contain a large number of deer that travel in less snow and eat all browse they are able to reach and many young deer will die there as they cannot reach the food that bigger deer can.Nature is a cruel killer....

Have friend who owns ground in Madison County they hardly see many deer compared to few years back. I think dnr pushed doe tags for too long down south you could get up to 8 extra antlerless tags on top of your regular quotas. Everyone headed south for too many years and now they only allow 2. Got lots of turkey though. I live in Blackford co.but hunt north in Cass Co. on farmground my wife's family owns now it is up in the air cause wife's dad and brother passed they farmed 900 acres and wife's siblings don't want to deal with cash renting the farm ground so if I'm lucky they'll split it amongst the 5 of them and my wife's part we can crp or plant trees or whatever it takes to pay yearly taxes. Deer love Bass Wood leaves and humans do eat them too! Good as lettuce, if not eaten by many insects...

Here in S.E. Ohio deer will eat them in late winter after most food sources gone. Often digging in snow and eating half of one @ a time.

White pine is completely worthless in SW Wisconsin. How do I know? I've been trying to get rid of some for 2+ years. If you're planting white pine for timber value, I'd reach out to a forestry consultant in your area to get an idea of what they're actually worth. Don't be surprised if you hear they're worth nothing.

Paper birch provides excellent winter browse, Jack pine and white spruce thermal cover, and Aspen live far longer than 40-60 years. You sound like a parrot for some forester.
