I made a mount that raised my seeder 6+ feet above ground level. I mounted it to the front of my side-by-side, put my sprayer on the tailgate and drug my cultipacker behind. Got everything done in one pass.

I did virtually the same thing only using Down Burst Seeder on front receiver hitch that can be calibrated similar to a grain drill having a 5 ft spreading width, which is also the width my John Deere Gator.

Planted into Buckwheat nearly chest high this year in one pass using Down Burst Seeder mounted on front receiver hitch of John Deere Gator & also spraying Glyphasphate/cultipacking in the same pass. Seeder can be calibrated literally in a few short minutes with a metering system much like that of a grain drill that uses air for a 5 ft spread out of a drop tube positioned just under 11 inches off the ground.

Have put over 7000#s thru a 2750...in 1 season. We actually have to run and gun our food plots too much and have too much seed to put out over too many acres, for a tank spreader 😉 Been there, done that...I think it's still in the bottom of the valley where I chucked it 🤣

I had to drive through my buckwheat with my atv just to make walking lanes and even after that it was a slog. But after I was done I hooked the cultipacker and put the sprayer on. Ran both at same time.

I planted Buckwheat in early July in N. Carolina, and then drought hit. It’s just now about 6”. I recently fertilized to hopefully boost but am afraid it won’t be tall enough by the end of the month to crimp over when I plant my brassica.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 ай бұрын
Hi Chris the brassica will germinate very well with just a moderate amount of rain, when uncovered. So don't worry about it too much ..just make sure to take care of any weeds and broadcast the seed before a rain.

Hey Jeff you mentioned that you will go with corn in that spot next year as a rotation. I know you will no till in the corn but how in the following year will you get rid of the debris your left to plant your next year plot without working it into the ground. Thanks for all the great info!!!

I love the buckwheat videos. My buckwheat didnt do very good this yr lack of rain and alot of turkeys. I thought you had to wait 20-30 days to plant after spraying 24-d
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 ай бұрын
That's a bummer about the turkeys! Plants shouldn't germinate before 14-21 days after spraying. We push that 14 day window quite a bit...but we don't over spray either.

Question....I have a low lying area that is covered in nutgrass. If I get ahead of it this spring with a pre-emergeant....will buckwheat take care of the rest as the year goes on? I'm just looking for a way to get rid of the nutgrass and possibly get something else growing in its place for fall. It's an open area about 2 acres in size.

I'm in northern MN on my first plot and I think I'll still have to plant into the standing buckwheat, it's not super tall yet. Don't know if I can afford to wait another week to plant it if I put 24d on.

When do you do the fertilizer? Does the fertilizer become unstable if it doesn't rain right away?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 ай бұрын
Hello! Good question. The nitrogen goes away after a few weeks in hot, dry weather...but that's it. We are using liquid fertilizer from DeerGro this year tho, which is immediately absorbed into the plant. We will spray that about 2 weeks after germination...

What about flail mowing before planting. The buckwheat would be gone instantly.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 ай бұрын
Way to easy to smash and spray. Also any kind of mowing can clump or row the buckwheat so it lays on the seed and shades out the germination...or keeps the seed from getting to the soil if seeding after. Also not everyone has a flail mower 😊

Hi Ben...14 days is pretty safe, because that means won't be germinating for around 21 days which is great! I push it down to 9/10 days, with good results because that is 16-17 days from spraying. I've never said 30 days...but definitely 14-21 days to be safe. Meaning germination at 14-21 days. I hope that is much clearer mud 😁

After repeated complaints, we were able to get thru to the folks at Earthway and they brought the OG BACK 😊 As of about April. We actually carry them on our Pure Wildlife Blends website now. In fact they tried 3 bad versions over about 18 months and after repeated complaints they brought the original back and discontinued all attempts to "improve" on a good thing 😊👍

Hi Tex! You can fit about 30-35# of rye or fertilizer or mist seeds. We are working on a thicker bag and a little bit larger so we can potentially hit that 40# mark....maybe available by Christmas? It would be manufactured by Earthway for us as our own model.

Thanks Jeff, long response, because my 3+ acres of plots are right next to my home I came up with a little different method. I decided to mow them just like my yard,a little each night about every 3 weeks. This seems to reduce broadleaf and allow more grass. I killed it twice July and August at 4 inches and now waiting for rain. Seeds should slide right now in there. I pray! By the way everything I try is inspired by your teachings, best channel out there.

This would be a great time to seed, roll, spray immediately if you only use Glyphosate. Or wait about a week to 10 days if you add 2-4D to the mix.

Great information about buckwheat. Step in the right direction, but wish you would start figuring out the best way to plant food plots without spraying herbicides and pesticides for people who prioritize their health and soils. I know it’s not as efficient, but worth the pay off for sure.

I'm glad you confirmed this for me. My buckwheat height has been dependent on the weather, some years 5ft, other years 2ft. Rolling it before on the year it was 5ft still worked great. I'll be moving up my buckwheat planting date next year. Glufosinate will nuke your pigweed and allow for planting the same day if you're tight on time.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 ай бұрын
Hi Rob! The Glyphosate won't touch the pigweed...or water hemp, or smart weed, or clover...so 2-4D is critical for some of those. We have unfortunately experienced this many times over...
@poplardeer
@poplardeer 4 ай бұрын
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751I agree 100%, Glufosinate aka Liberty, will though. I learned how resistant Waterhemp is to gly last year, never again. 2,4d +gly 7-10 days before planting or Liberty the same weekend. Big relief to find out there are options against Pigweed, waterhemp, marestail, and other resistant weeds!

best, easiest, cheapest way to put in a food plot. That being said, I made the mistake of having my cousin who was logging my neighbors put in my food plots this year. HUGE Mistake. he used tractor and brush hog and didnt spray enough to kill the weeds. now I have 70% weeds and 20% dirt and 10% clover. Just listen to Jeff guys and do it yourself! will be starting from scratch with Fall Power Greens
