I hunted in Fiordland in August, 1972, doing a hybrid cull for the Park Board, along with seven other U of Canterbury students. We hunted the Lake Hankinson and Lake Thompson blocks for 12 days. OMG the sandflies around Lake Hankinson... words fail me. They were very bad in August, what would they be like in mid-summer? We all reloaded our own ammo, as we all belonged to the U of Canterbury Deerstalkers Club, which had a gear pool including reloading dyes etc. for most calibres. Great stuff Lucy. The next step in your hunting career probably needs to be a Stewart Island whitetail trip, if you've not already done that de rigueur trip of a good NZ hunter. Whitetail are tricky wee deer, and great to hunt. Good hunting, Lucy.

Sounds like that would’ve been an awesome trip! The sandflies are pretty notorious year round down there! Great idea with the gear pool, dyes aren’t cheap! I was pretty lucky to head down to Stewart island for a hunt a few years ago, didn’t shoot anything but was an amazing trip. Would love to get back down there again one day. Hope you’ve had a great weekend!
