I’m a big Whitney fan so I appreciate a gentle take on her. It’s always hard to listen to anyone be cruel about her drug use and downfall, which I think is one of the greatest tragedies of our time. That voice! Her beauty and grace and humor and vitality. She was ethereal and soulful and seemed so kind and truly loved the Lord. Making a movie about her life is hard because she was different things to different people…including being a joke to those who mocked her. I’m going to see this on Christmas Day with a bunch of other Whitney fans and we are just looking forward to hearing her music and seeing the story of her success…so I’m glad to hear they skip over the rough spots. I wish in a better world that maybe she and Robin could have stayed together and that drugs weren’t part of her life. There will never be another like her and honestly we were all lucky to hear her sing and see her act. Wish she had done more movies too!

Well said Kevin! This was the biggest intention for this film was to tell the most important part of her life, which was her outstanding career achievements and a voice that defined a generation. A lot of the pressers I read highlighted that all the other garbage was well documented, covered and told over and over ad nauseam. They wanted to tell parts of the story that have been consistently left out, which is her artistic legacy. I also loved and appreciated they let Robin and Whitney’s story play a prominent role and they didn’t gloss over it.

As a mega Whitney fan. The movie's pacing was very rushed. Like a roller coaster. It seemed as though we (the audience) were trying to keep up with pinnacle moments of her life. Yes, the movie mainly focused on her positive career highlights. But I would've liked to see the dynamics of her as a young child, her musical relationship with Babyface, the courtship with Bobby, relationship with her close friends Cece & Bebe Winans. Her spirituality. She was very embedded in the fabric of Christian music 🎶 "Hold Up The Light" & "I Love The Lord" etc..🎵 She was a friend, a mentor to the younger artists such as TLC, Monica. Brandy, etc.. Simply put the movie did not encapsulate the Essence of Whitney in totality. Her movie career "Waiting to exhale" The Preachers Wife" & lastly "Sparkle" 🎬 Her contribution & incompareable talents deserved much more than a mediocre movie from Clive Davis & Pat Houston's biase perspectives. 🎞 RIH Whitney "Nippy" Houston ❤️

It's so difficult to pull off a successful Whitney biopic - for all the reasons why she became a star in the first place - she was extraordinary. It's hard to even mimic her brilliance effectively. The same theory can be applied to a possible Michael Jackson or Prince biographical film. They were just so unique and cemented in their individual personas. This became starkly clear after both men passed and there were tributary shows broadcast in their honor. Other stars performing Michael and Prince's songs, quite often, left much to be desired. Having said that, in recent memory, I believe Judy Davis playing Judy Garland and Marion Cotilliard as Edith Piaf were two noticeable stand-outs.

Let Whitney Rest In Peace!!!!! I just don’t understand why this is still a story. Don’t get me wrong, I did love to hear Houston sing but it is time to move on. Her life and death were both tragic. It is like reopening a wound over and over and over again and again. When I’m feeling patriotic I will watch her sing the Star Spangled Banner. NOTHING COMPARES to her singing that. I get goosebumps when I hear her sing it. Tamara Tunney will ALWAYS be Jessica from As the World Turns. It doesn’t matter what she has ever been in… I always say out loud “ there’s Jessica” I can’t help it. Merry Christmas

I am 55 yrs old and was in my late teens when Whitney Houston came on the scene in 1985 (actually I knew her already since 1983 from duets she did with Teddy Pendergrass and Jermaine Jackson and TV spots she did on one of my favorite soap operas) I was and still am obsessed with her. To be fair Naomi Ackie is a pretty woman and got many of Whitney's mannerisms down when she mimed the live performances. However I am sorry - all I kept thinking was how much more stunning it would have been with a young woman who was as statuesque, slender, and willowy like the real Whitney was. Whitney was NOT a big ass, thick thighed girl. She was slender with long willowy arms and legs. A tiny waist and a beautiful apple shaped, curvy, yet slim ass. Look at her gorgeous slim, perky bottom in these tight pants in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZzHfnmjd9h7nac And also that gorgeous face - she had delicate features, high cheekbones, oval shaped face, gorgeous mouth with pouty, full lips - not fat lips. Go watch "You Give Good Love" video to see that gorgeous face and mouth I am talking about!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/moqagaCOa7Sta5o I cannot help but be very partial to the real Whitney's true beauty because I was there when she first captured the world. You have to understand - Whitney Houston was a once in a lifetime or generation talent. Lots of beautiful women sing - but not like that - and a lot of the women that can sing DO NOT look like a supermodel. But Whitney was the jackpot - a gorgeous young woman who can blow the roof off with that angelic, clear, sweet as honey voice. That is why she was so magical - She did have it all. Sadly Naomi Ackie did not. But she tried her best.

Sorry but this seems a little too obsessive about the looks. Reading this feels like they would have needed to find a Whitney duplicate/twin; even if it means getting someone with no acting chops. I didn't find Ackie's looks distracting to a fault. But to each his own.

Look at all the thumbnails that you see everywhere where they pose this girl in a position where she halfway looks like Whitney from a distance but she looks nothing like Whitney Houston. How hard could it have been to just get an actress that really looks like her especially since she's lip syncing anyway they should have helped out to get somebody that looks like her. I guarantee you had Katt Williams played Ray Charles instead of Jamie Foxx, the movie would not have been a hit at all!

When it comes to these type films, I often refer to them as a "Wikipedia Biopic". In other words, whoever wrote the screenplay (or the director, or someone in the editing team) more turned the movie into essentially a bullet-point-by-bulllet-point synopsis of the big events of their life, with little insight or ideas of what made them really tick. So basically, stuff you can get off the person's Wikipedia page instead of actually seeing this movie. Also, I agree with others: why did they decide to make this movie PG-13? Especially when you go through all the stuff Whitney went through with Bobby Brown, that in itself would give the movie an R rating, or even be its own movie. Were they expecting another Bohemian Rhapsody out of this? Because I'm pretty sure people weren't on board with THAT movie being PG-13 either!

The movie is better because it focuses on her career more but it was tired. But even the Oprah interview sure said how she went on the run from Bobby with Bobby Christina. So yeah very lackluster.

A part of me is actually glad they glossed over those Atlanta years 03-07. The “Whitney” documentary gave enough insight on those lowest most ridiculed moments of her life. But i am curious to know how they’re going to address her vocal decline; if she was able to process the damage she’d done & was she really trying to get it back?

Great review I think you said most of what I also thought, the movie while alright, was held back by its direction in the way they wanted to tell the story. I often was disappointed by some of the supporting performances bc as you said Naomi, and the actors who portrayed the parents KILLED it to the point where it was too noticeable in the difference of performance but man I just wish the production value should’ve been better bc I kept on noticing that the moments that SHOULD have felt more spectacular just like you said felt more “dull”

I was born in the 80s, always thought Whitney had the best voice but I didn't really watch her or got into her music. This movie made me interested in her and since then, I've been obsessively watching anything and everything Whitney. Lol. So yeah, y'all didn't need it but there's a whole generation of people who are just now really learning and wanting to learn about the legend that is Whitney Houston.

A lot of people don’t understand that there has been so many depictions that have completely just disrespected Whitney and her legacy , we all know the toxicity and everything that happened so why do we need to keep showcasing that Whitney was so much more then that, and I’m so glad they did gloss over it. We needed a film that would be respectful in this way. So tired of Hollywood treating her as if that was all to her story! As I’m fan this movie was beautifully done!!!

Just came from the AMC Dine-In. I was in tears damn near the whole movie. This was a really good movie to me. Just hearing that beautiful voice. The actress had Whitney's mannerisms and she did a great job. Overall I'm very pleased with this version of Whitney's story. Tje casting of Clive, Sissy Bobby was spot on.

Narada Michael Walden produced the song, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" as well as "How Will I Know". Some of his best anecdotes of Whitney's brilliance in the studio was simply left out of the biopic. Side eyes....

I’ve been a fan since the 80’s when I was a little girl, and I was around to see Whitney’s growth, and I feelthe movie was rushed and they just skimmed over random parts of her life. This was not what I was expecting, and why on Earth would they cast a British actress to play an American woman!? No wonder she couldn’t pull it off. They should make a 25 season series of Whitney’s life where they cover every era of her life, that don’t only include all important milestone music and moments and interviews/ performances that we already know and have seen before, but show us something that we never knew before, more behind the scene moments as well. We didn’t learn anything new with this movie. They need to actually cast someone who resembles her more (I mean I know it’s hard to find another who is as beautiful as her, but they never even come close). A woman who carries herself the same way Whitney did, who can capture Whitney’s essence and embody the true spirit, persona/personality, characteristics, mannerisms, speaking voice as her. Whitney had more class and was more articulate than they portrayed her in this movie. Plus Naomi over-acted, at times it just seemed like a parody of Whitney. 🙄 And what I also noticed that Naomi’s legs were too thick wearing those leggings, Whitney was much thinner (in a good way). And the guy who played Bobby Brown looked like a stick figure compared to the real Bobby. The cast was all wrong. The only thing I liked about the movie was how they used Whitney’s real voice for the live performances. The only voice who came close to sounding like her was when they used the vocals of Debra Cox in the 2015 “ Whitney” movie that Angela Basset directed.

Enjoyed your review of the movie. Because I am a staunch Whitney fan, I am hesitant to see it. You guys hit it on the head and I’ve said it from the day I saw who was cast as Whitney--NAOMI AS LOOKS LIKE MOLLY FROM “INSECURE” DRESSING UP AS WHITNEY🤷🏾‍♂️ The wardrobe and music are A1! Naomi lacks the “shaky lip” vibrato when Whitney sang. My personal choice was JOY BRYANT. Still on the fence about this one, but again, I enjoyed you guys giving a review.
