Good day Brian😊 I want to update you. I’ve been following your tutorials on the ChessMen for 2 months. Today I have finished the whole set. I have started to apply Beeswax with Linseed Oil on the lighter pieces and it turned beautiful. I am planning to apply Coffee ☕️ for the darker pieces. I’ll update you how it turned out. Thank you so much for your tutorial. I enjoyed carving indeed it is fun and I learned a lot. Blessings 😊

Update: The Coffee application turned out great 😊 My desired dark coffee color turned on the 4th application. For darker color you can apply more applications. Sure I’ll send the pictures of the Chessmen I carved you have taught me. Thank you so much for teaching me how to carve. I developed confidence, and respect for my knives and relationship with the wood I am working. I’ll follow the miniature animal carvings for my granddaughter 😊 She likes them so much 🤗 Blessings from the Philippines 🇵🇭

Hi, these guides have been great! It's my first project and I've finished carving the set. I have a question about the beeswax finish and walnut stain. Once the stain is applied, could you apply the beeswax finish on top to give it a layer of protection or is there no need for that?

No amount of therapy has internalized the message of "don't worry if it's not perfect" than this whittling youtube channel has.

would red cedar work instead of basswood? Love your vids! Keep it up!!
@CarvingisFun Жыл бұрын
You can use red cedar if you want, just be patient with it as it is harder and can splinter.

Do you think I could make larger versions of the pieces?
@CarvingisFun3 жыл бұрын
Indeed you can! Just scale up the dimensions of each measurements in the same proportion to what is shown in the video and you will be all set..

How long would it take for a newbie to whittle the white half of the set?
@CarvingisFun3 жыл бұрын
Lets see, if you are making only half the set you would be making 16 pieces in total. Maybe 6 to 10 hours depending on your knife and wood. The pawns may take you half an hour each (on average, you will get faster) but make up half the pieces. The rooks are pretty simple, I would say maybe 20-30 minfor the pair. The remaining are slightly more complex and may take 40 min to an hour each.

@@CarvingisFun As a total novice I can say the pawns take a lot longer than that ! Although it was the first thing I've ever carved. More like 3 hours but I'm sure I'll get a lot faster as I go.

Where can I get basswood?
@CarvingisFun2 жыл бұрын
I usually buy some from a guy on ebay, you can also buy beavercrafta basswood on amazon, and if you are in the US heinecke wood and treeline usa are good options.
