I've got a 503, I think it's close to the same size & specs as the 55. They are great knives, can't go wrong with a Buck!

Got two 110's, a 112, one of the big black buck stockman knife, a couple of buck fixed blades including a 119. My buck whittlers are two buck 373's, one modified by convexing all three blades and turning the sheepfoot blade into a wharncliff.

People buy Buck knives for the quality. The Buck 110’s purpose was to be a compact hunting knife. It literally became the standard work knife of every blue collar man. I bought the 55 as soon as it was available. Strictly an emotional purchase. The same quality of a 110 in a smaller package.

Very good review. Very fair. One thing that I believe could improve the Bucks is a sharpening choil. But many knives don't have that and you can file your own. It looks like a hollow grind. Thanks you. 👍

I have only had a few knives that actually had a sharpening choil, but have owned a few that needed one right from the manufacture (R. Murphy hand carving knife needs it, its like they don't know how to grind the blade properly). The 55 looks like it has more of a double bevel to it, the grind doesn't feel concave at least. Still, I'm not completely versed in all the lingo of knives and do get my own terminology wrong from time to time :)

@@CarvingisFun I've not been interested in knives until this year and you just pick up the jargon. It's just useful shorthand (though stones it can be used as a barrier). A choil can be seen on your Flexcut knife and makes it easier to sharpen up to the ricasso (the unsharpened part of the blade near the handle). A small file or Dremel cut one in a few minutes. Perhaps you mean a secondary bevel. That would be appropriate for an all round knife like the Buck as it can make the edge less prone to chipping. A lot of knives come terribly sharpened from the factory. But that's no big deal: carving = learning how to sharpen! 😁

Yep, forgot the Flexcut had the choil. Honestly, never gave it much thought. Correct, secondary bevel is what I was referring to. Learning to sharpen is half the fun too, wife makes fun of me as whenever she sees me at my workbench I am usually stropping a knife instead of carving :)

@@CarvingisFun 😂 Yup, sharpening can easily transform into an obsession. Check out Joe Dillett's channel. His power stropping is amazing and affordable - he's not selling anything. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJjJmqmPjc1jh68 It's on my to do list. 👍

Oh ya, I have seen that one! A power strop is on the list for future purchases, always enjoy using new tools!

My 055 has got a lot of bladeplay. Not up and down, but sideways. Is that a problem? Can I fix it myself? I can’t return it because I have it engraved, and sending it to the USA is gonna cost me a lot.

Great video. Question. Does it have a false edge on the top of the blade?
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It sorta has a false edge near the tip, but it wouldn't be worth working into anactual edge as it will take some serious work to do so.

It's a clip point blade - the "clip" being out of the unsharpened side of the blade. It makes the tip nice and pointy for precise cutting (I think specifically skinning an animal, though I've never used my Buck 55 for that).

Hey Brian.. I carry a buck 110 and 112 .. what r ur thoughts on these 2 knives ? Thanks buddy

Both good all around blades, maybe a bit big for some delicate whittling tasks but will still more than get the job done for some basic whittling on the go. Give them a good sharpen n hone and you will be all set.

I have one ordered to go with my 110 and 112. I wish you would have put a proper edge on it for your demonstration. It acts like a dull butter knife!

I normally would reshape the knife for carving but the overall blade width was also a factor to deal with as well. I think it was one of those moments where I knew that it wouldn't be used long term as a whittling knife and just kept the standard evey day profile on it instead.
