Hello Hilbert. I used to stay up all hours too when a student. One late night programme I used to watch was the Silk Road by a Japanese team showing how diverse this area was. I remember I was by coincidence painting Scythian wargames figures and had just realized the Tsung Nu were originally in this area. I always was interested in the topics you are studying, but chose science thinking about a job at the end of studying, so I wish you good luck and keep doing what you love. Have you ever looked at China's ancient western expansion and whether this contributed to the end of the Roman empire as steppe people moved west? Hilbert, thank you for doing this video and raising awareness about the plight of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. It seems that you've certainly done your research, considering that you pronounce "Uyghur" correctly, unlike many other Western commentators I've seen who pronounce it like "Wee-gars", which just hurts my ears. Also, many testimonies and evidence about the repressions in Xinjiang were collected from Kazakhs (they're persecuted too) and Uyghurs from the region who had Kazakh citizenships. Unfortunately our government is much less enthusiastic to help them because they prefer economic trade over human rights violations in Xinjiang. Plus, we live in a dictatorship too, where public dissent is rarely tolerated.

As a side note, while I do commend your attempt at pronouncing their endonym, the gh is similar-ish to the Arabic letter غ, and written with it. To my non-Uyghur/Turkic and non-Arab ear it's still a tad different, somewhere in the voiced uvular fricative to voiced velar approximant range.

The confusing history of the "Uyghurs". 1.Uyghurs are a Turkic people from Mongolia who migrated to western china in the 8th century ad after being pushed out by the Kirghiz(another turkic group). 2.They Uyghurs who were strongly east asian looking mixed with the Indo-European natives of the region and formed a new mixed race people with Uyghur Turkic replacing the Indo-European languages. 3.The Uyghurs loss a series of wars and left western china to Gansu region as the Ganzu Uyghur kingdom and Kocho kingdom. Where they live today as the Yugur people(uyghur people). 4.The Karluk Turks of the karakhanid khanate moved in and replaced the Uyghurs, and during Communist period the Chinese renamed the Karluks as "Uyghurs" even though the Yugurs are the actual Uyghurs. The Chinese did the same with the Pamiri people(East Iranian group native to China) renaming them as Chinese Tajiks even though they are not Tajiks.

Quite elaborative and convicting explanations. What is ironic is all Islamic countries betrayed Uighurs because no economic interest in protecting Uighurs. Uighurs are kind, honest and friendly people; they have done no harm to any other countries. Hope world strives to save them.

Well, there are multiple Uyghur terrorist groups that have killed hundreds, and that's part of the reason why the conflict is happening. But I guess it's justified, and the majority of Uyghur's don't participate in the violence.

The people who are targeted in Xinjiang are the Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgiz and the Hui people. People are being put in detention camps for the following reasons. being a “Muslim who had a beard” saying “God is great” at a funeral being able to read the Quran performing religious activities without a permit working as Muslim clergy having Islamic digital content on one’s phone or computer performing a religious wedding ceremony praying performing traditional funeral rites giving a sermon allowing employees to listen to sermons having previously participated in the Hajj enrolling one’s child in religious classes studying Islam at an Egyptian university traveling to or living in predominantly Muslim countries having a deceased family member who was a Uyghur religious scholar having a family member who performed religious activities and posting about Islam on the messaging service WeChat The persecution and Sinization of Muslims in Xinjiang is spreading to other parts of China too.
