As an Australian and a Melbournian I'm delighted by the appointment of the Ukranian Catholic bishop based in Melbourne. It has always been the tradition for the Abp of Sydney to be named a cardinal so I'm very happy they were overlooked. Bishop Vincent Long of Paramatta would have been another good choice.

Koovakad's elevation is an honour for India. But when Pope Francis labelled him the smiling dictator, it hurts his chances of being elected Pope at the next conclave. Electors will remember that comment. Australia is unlikely to get a red hat under this papacy because they were all friends or benefactors of Cardinal Pell. Basis whispers many knew what Pell did but remained silent. Poor behaviour for clerics. To be fair the bishop of Townsville was recommended. The periphery aspects means archbishops from the main cities are overlooked not just in Australia. Example Charles Chaput from Philadelphia and Jose Gomez from Los Angeles. But Gomez neighbour from San Deigo was given the red hat.

Pope Francis claims to appoint cardinals from the peripheries but he appoints the Toronto archbishop as cardinal and North America is hardly the periphery; he gives the red hat to a South Asian but who happens to be based in the Vatican and is in fact the Pope’s travel agent. He appoints a bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church but whose eparchy is actually in Australia! So what “periphery” is the Pope talking about?
