Barzini never wanted anything to do with a "commission". He still carried the old Sicilian belief that ruling all NYC as the "Capo di Tutti Capi" was the only legitimate expression of Cosa Nostra. The Solozzo Affair was his final gambit to enact this. He waited until Vito Corleone grew old and complacent, and then he manipulated Virgil Solozzo and the Tattaglias into a war that would undo the peace just so he could label the Commission a failure, and return to the old ways. Thus, absorbing the remains and re-ordering everyone in it into his new Barzini empire as the Boss of Bosses once and for all. He gave himself away at the Commission meeting where peace was made between the Tattaglias and Corleones by placing himself at the head of the table during the opening remarks. That's a no-no in Cosa Nostra. Commission meetings are supposed to be held at roundtables to symbolize everyone having equal input. Being the head of the table was what the old timers from Sicily fought over. That one slip up confirmed to Vito that Barzini still hadn't put his ambitions to bed after all these years, despite his promises otherwise, and that he was still seeking total control of NYC's five families.

This film format while great is now outdated. The movies had a slow pace that let you see the background activities more clearly and the family feuds that took place. If anyone would try to make movies like these right now they would consider it a huge risk to finances to do something that out of the now norm. So the possibilities are pretty slim. 😅

I agree, but modern Hollywood would do to the story what they did to Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and Scooby Doo. Turn it into woke dog doo. The mob bosses would be depicted as stupid, racist white men, who couldn't do anything without their wives, who are stunning and strong wamen who don't need no man. The families themselves would be chock full of representation, with mobsters from Asia, Africa, South America and India all having been made. Then there would be Cunio's non-binary Consigliere and Strachi's gender fluid Underboss. No, my friend. The days of Hollywood epics are long over. Just pray they don't remake this classic with Seth Rogan cast as Vito.

@Mcdamn1026
@Mcdamn1026 3 жыл бұрын
The Tattalgia family was used because Phillip was the weakest leader who could Be manipulated very easily with a promise of some cash and the illusion that he was gonna be more respected for what he was doing. They were simply gonna use him to take the heat from the corleone family because they knew the Don wouldn’t go down without a fight. After they got what they wanted Philip was probably gonna get whacked out because if they could manipulate him someone else could too down the road.

In Phillip Tattaglia, I see something of what Fredo might have been like as a Don. At best, he would survive only due to heavy dependence on others and easily manipulated. Of course, unlike Tattaglia, Fredo WAS a complete moron and wouldn't have lasted nearly as long.

@@MrPeperoni79 That would be wildly incorrect. Bonnano was an extremely fortunate survivor of the Castellamarese War, as he was decidedly allied with Maranzano and supported the old-fashioned ways, which was exactly what the "Young Turks" like Luciano were trying eradicate. Dozens of mafiosi like him were killed for their affiliation to Maranzano, whereas he was *gifted* the lead of his own Commission-seated crime family at the tender age of 25. Bonnano's whole life was basically just a never-ending series of events he shouldn't have survived.

Can someone explain to me how killing the heads of the “five families” elevated The Corleones? Don’t the underboss of each family take their place? Killing the head don doesn’t necessarily mean the destruction of the entire family. I totally understand taking out Philip Tattaglia since the underboss Bruno Tattaglia was already executed, the family was weakened and the Corleones could basically absorb the entire organization. I also understand taking out Moe Greene to take over Vegas but the other hits puzzles me as far as strategy. If I missed something please excuse my ignorance.

Well back then we didn’t know as much about mob as we do today, so Mario Puzo made one mistake thinking that “family” is actually a blood related and that only a son would be a successor to boss, so if a boss doesn’t have any alive or capable sons, the family would simple be absorbed by others, in this case Frank Five Angels or Clemenza or whoever it was

@billhicks6449
@billhicks6449 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest thing to consider when it comes to the commission is seniority can be telling. Usually the commission would get final say on who replaced them, but with only Chicago and Buffalo left to vote besides the Corleone's it would be very easy for Michael to maneuver who he wanted into those positions. Of course this could cause a Colombo/Gallo type war.
@joemckim1183
@joemckim1183 3 жыл бұрын
@@billhicks6449 With so many Dons getting whacked would their natural successors get to take over or would someone else in the families step over them that would be more agreeable to the Corleone's.
@billhicks6449
@billhicks6449 3 жыл бұрын
@@joemckim1183 who steps up is usually like emperors of old, he who has the support of the men. By that I mean the vast majority of support and it's likely as not to be a relative of the former boss. And to the commission it was a sign of weakness if you couldn't get the support of your men. They wouldn't confirm you knowing it will probably cause a war in your family. For instance while Michael could, in the eyes of everyone in the Corleone family, do as he wanted with the other five families with Pete and Sal; he never could have taken over if Clemenza or Tessio disapproved. Michael had never run a crew. Michael wasn't a street guy. In that case Michael would be seen as weak so they wouldn't confirm. So it's kind of a situational feeling out thing. Like the pope saying they get to crown the king because of gods will; as the King reminds the Pope that the church doesn't have standing army; while the people remind both they're the standing army.... God laughing at everyone.

This meeting was orchestrated by Don Vito Corleone to “make the peace” and stop the warring against his family, a move Michael says shows weakness and his father agrees with him, but it’s to maintain “the peace”. Michael then says, “You gave your word, I didn’t.” making it possible for him to exact revenge but only after his father passes.There was some kind of “honor” in waiting until his father passed, so he couldn’t be accused of breaking his word, that would truly have been “an infamnia”. Michael was very shrewd, cunning, and calculating in knowing if he didn’t exact revenge, there would be no one to protect him from any outside treachery or future attempts on his life, and when he found out it was Fredo that betrayed him, I think it genuinely broke his heart to think his own brother would turn against him because family was supposed to be stronger than steel. This goes to show the depths of greed and treachery some people will resort to to “stay on top.” , murder, lies, and betrayal, are all the price of doing, “this is the business we’ve chosen, I didn’t ask who gave the order, I didn’t like it, but I let it go because it had NOTHING TO DO WITH BUSINESS!!!“

I have a question about a deleted scene. In the first Godfather movie Vito says to get his sons together so they can visit the former Conciliary in the hospital in his death bed. The sons that go with him are Vito's three biological sons and his actual godson. But no Tom Haygan. Why is that? Tom is the new Conciliary and one would think he was also close to the former. I think this sets up how Micheal sees Tom and how he was able to coldly tell Tom he was "out". Even though Tom was adopted by the family he still wasn't fully considered a part of the family. He just wasn't all the way in that inner circle. In the scene (this was actually in the movie) Tom makes the statement "I was as much as a son to him as you were" to Sonny doesn't verbally reply he just kind of shrugs and before he can reply they are interrupted. Without that deleted scene the shrug could be interpreted was "yeah yer right" but WITH that deleted scene it could be taken as "ehhh...not exactly...". So why wasn't Tom included in the hospital visit?
