I would love very much to see a film - even an animated one - about a Gray Jedi who occasionally must wrestle with the dark side of their personality. Such an inner struggle would create a lot of tension as he or she goes about their duties. Luke Skywalker could never be a Gray Jedi, but Rey most certainly could with her Palpatine bloodline and that would make for an interesting story.

@Chriscraft-ug3sz3 жыл бұрын
bradford yeah I’d def acknowledge that the concept put into practice is risky to turn to either side, but it’s really excessive use of the dark side that corrupts you. And it’d also be very hard to achieve yes. You could still get help of GJ were in an order setting. Also Emotion does keep you on the light side, several people on the light side would remain there while having attachments to people and things. The first mistake the Jedi order made was pledging loyalty to the Republic. Why would any order hoping to bring peace to the entire galaxy pledge loyalty to only part of it? We've seen how this decision screwed over so many people. During the Clone Wars, the Jedi were forbidden from helping those in need simply because the Separatists weren't involved. The Jedi became the slaves of the Republic. Luke Skywalker fixed this after The Galactic Federation turned on him. The second mistake was creating a code that forbade emotion and attachments. This decision was made to prevent Jedi falling to the dark side, but repressing emotions and strict rules actually caused more to fall to the dark side. Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker are two examples of how the code was actually it's own enemy. Yet again, Luke fixed this after he created the New Jedi Order. Allowing Jedi to marry and allowing the dark side to be studied.

I love the Sith the most, but my personal experiences have taught me that the Grey Jedi is the best format to live life by. Primarily the search for Balance, first in ones self, then attempting to bring balance to the world. If you’re out of balance with yourself, you’re not qualified to bring balance to much else.
@ReadyComicsRoll6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better ourselves!
@HardCorpsPredator6 жыл бұрын
protectorian It is a question, and a good one at that. The answer is easy. The people who determine the balance are the people who aren’t greedy or are close minded to other ideas aside from there own. They are the people who would see currency completely done away with, see to it that power is quickly removed from those who let it get to their heads, and want what’s best for all humans. They can’t be racist, biased, arrogant, irresponsible, quick to anger, or have any desire to be treated as being better than others. They want to make the weak strong and the strong wise. They consider all options for the good of all mankind. It’s really not that hard. It really just takes a wise and experienced mind with a heart full of good intent towards all. It’s what we should all strive to be.
@HardCorpsPredator6 жыл бұрын
protectorian That’s not the question you asked. You asked what the qualifications were for those who would bring the balance. To bring balance IS to mean well for all, because balance is what’s best for all. But that does not mean every decision made in everyone’s best interest is going to be pleasant to experience or execute. Unlike the Jedi, understanding what evils are necessary and which ones are not is part what aids in maintaining balance. And while greed CAN be a powerful ally, it is one of those evils that is more a plague than an aid to balance, as greed is a thing that always seeks to destroy balance. Greed is the ultimate enemy to ultimate balance. That does not mean that personal desires are wrong to have (which is where the Jedi failed), but when your self centered desires consume you and cause you to disrupt the balance in your own life and that of others is when your desire has turned to greed, and you become a Sith-like threat to the balance of all things.
@HardCorpsPredator6 жыл бұрын
protectorian Also, I said absolutely nothing about suppressing our desires to enter the darker parts of ourselves. You can’t make peace with your inner demons by getting rid of them or quieting them, because they will always haunt you in this life. Rather you MUST explore them to their fullest extent to understand yourself better, but NOT to a degree in a manner in which it harms the balance in and around you. It’s called “self” control for a reason. And if humans worked together, we could create simulations for all manners of evil where people could experience their inner demons to their fullest extent without harming others or wrecking the balance in any way. And any who fail to have self control, or “self balance,” despite these aids must be punished accordingly, as they would have no excuse to commit their evils for real. We already have some good simulations in the form of video games. I can’t go out and start shooting people for no reason because that would be the opposite of balance. But thanks to GTA, I can hop on there any time I’m feeling like a psycho killer and unleash hell without disrupting any balance. Imagine a place that catered to your darkest desires where you could do anything you want without actually harming anyone or disturbing the balance of nature. You could even join in activities with others to perform fake crime of all sorts if you wished. Your worst demons are satisfied, and no one gets hurt. So long as you make peace with your demons, and are wise enough to have good self control, you have achieved inner balance. But I think achieving that for all humans would require some serious technology, as some people need more physical assistance and props to aid with their self control than others do. However that level of technology is something we haven’t committed to creating because those in leadership would rather control others before controlling themselves, and would rather wreak real chaos as opposed to limiting it to simulations. Once you embrace your inner demons and find a harmless outlet for them, it is much easier to achieve inner balance. After that, then you can help others to do the same, thereby bringing all humans into equal balance one soul at a time. Minds will become more open, humans will be able to evolve together through knowledge and mutual harmony, and this in turn will eventually bring the world into balance. Greed tends to make that a problem though. As does any organization that brainwashes people into believing Jedi/Sith types of concepts. Primarily religion, but really any over-exaggerated cause or pride like racism, veganism, or even patriotism can be twisted and used against balance. That is why such ideologies are also unnecessary and dangerous to achieving a balanced world.
@HardCorpsPredator6 жыл бұрын
protectorian I don’t think we’re on the same page, but ok. Lol. I’m talking about applying balance to the REAL world. OUR world. I’m not interested in running it by what the Grey Jedi do or say, as they are not all even on the same page of each other. It is simply the application of embracing the light and the darkness within ourselves that I am talking about. What happens in the Star Wars galaxy is pretty much up to Disney now, but I hope that the true fans will continue to fight to keep Disney in check. What matters most is what we learn from Star Wars, and that we apply those lessons to our personal lives. That’s why I’m such a major fan. Very few things in my life have been constant for me, and Star Wars is not only one of those things, but it has aided greatly in my learning of the importance of balance within myself and the world around me. It has made a much better and more mature person out of me from all aspects. And the more I seek to maintain my balance, the more fulfilling my life gets. The Force may not exist in this reality, but from my experience, the universe definitely seems to reward those who seek balance in all things. Its my goal to aid the universe in achieving and maintaining balance as it expands, as I believe that is the true and original purpose of all life that exists everywhere.

It frees a whole class of potential characters of the complications of choosing a moral side. In the end, while I like the idea, becoming a Grey Jedi should be a destination, not a starting point. Very well said and I completely agree with you. The gray jedi is such a cool and interesting subject I think and I'd love to see a movie or game or book or whatever really that tell stories and follow those who WE or other star wars characters might classify as gray jedi.. But if they were to decide to make "the gray jedi" a thing, a side that one were able to choose to align with.. It almost goes against the gray jedi in a fundamental way and would 100% ruin what makes them so cool. The ones that we consider as gray jedi come from a place of following either the way of the sith or the way of the jedi, sometimes even both! For whatever reason(s) though they have severed ties with them only after they experience great personal growth, reflection, and just a general knowledge of the world and life and where their morals align. They have decided that maybe they agree with the jedi on some things but maybe not others.. They embrace the dark side from a perspective of the fact that it's nothing that should scare you as long as you know where you stand and know you are what you perceive as good why should another side of the force have any effect on you negative or otherwise? They don't let the ways of the jedi or the ways of the sith dictate how they think in every single facet of their own personal journey of life. They refuse to pick and align themselves with either side because they are free thinking and do what they think is right in all situations instead of what you are told to think is right by the faction that you align with. Only siths deal in absolutes and they aren't willing to say just because I agree with you here I will absolutely agree with everything you say. They know who they are and won't let anyone tell them they are bad because they may do some things that are considered "dark force" and they won't let anyone tell them that they are not good just because they don't agree with the jedi when it comes to every single thing. If aligning yourself as a gray jedi were to become a thing it would take away from the fact that you think for yourself, are at peace with and comfortable with who you are and the decisions you make being the right decisions for YOU based on who YOU are as an individual. When you put a defined label on it you inevitably start considering and quantifying what exactly it is that makes one a gray jedi and what established adoptors of the label of "gray jedi" thus far have done or what they would do... Where they align themselves on certain subjects, how they think. Down to even what force abilities do "gray jedi" use... That in and of itself is going entirely against what it is to be a gray jedi. It wouldn't take but a minute for new force users deciding to align themselves as a "gray jedi" to start taking on the qualities of existing gray jedi because well... They've put the label on themselves so now they have to think like gray jedi do and act like gray jedi do, right? Walk the walk so to speak. And that is where it all falls apart. By declaring yourself a gray jedi you've essentially become the exact thing that a gray jedi is not. This topic is fascinating me right now and reminds me a lot of real life and religion in some ways. Sorry this is so long if anyone read it. If not it was a fun thought and reflection for myself personally hahaha.

There is no grey Jedi in the Lucas universe. It is impossible. Grey Jedi is an oximoron. First of all, a Jedi is a member of the Jedi Order. Otherwise just a Force user or a member of another church/cult/sect/whatever. The Jedi Order does not allow the use of the Dark Side one tiny bit, because the Dark Side will consume the user according to Yoda (George Lucas) "Once you start down the dark path forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will ..." Period. So the problem with the rules Lucas set, that it is inevitable to become evil bit by bit if one starts to use the Dark Side. And that is dangerous to the whole galaxy so it can not be allowed. That is why the Jedi became pragmatic, which means that any Jedi attempts to use the Dark Side will be dealt with.

Keep it in context...Anakin said "you are either with me or against me." and Obi-wan's response to THAT was "Only a Sith DEALS in absolute." Absolutes exist in nature there is no escaping it, despite how you to want to try and bend the rules. The key word here is "deals" as in only the Sith deals in "yes" and "no" and don't question the in between, they have a very binary response and do not see the implications nor the complications of their own actions due to their own arrogance, rage and pride. The Jedi will also embrace the dark side in their training and will allow it to certain degrees but only Master Jedi are allowed to undergo this training (Mace Windu with his Form 7 variation of Vaapad). Also the fact that there are Grey Jedi allowed to exist in the academy (Oui-Gon Jinn) shows they are not as restrictive as the Sith in terms of knowledge. If you take it out of context then it sounds like a contradiction but you have to understand that the Jedi are also not perfect and they were written as such, they are blinded by their dogmatic ways and are so persistent on upholding their "truths" when that is just a perspective to another and not the ultimatum. With that, the Jedi do not deal in absolutes but are more guided by blind faith which can be equally as bad.

Sith is being of a higher quality than your run of the mill dark sider. being a grey sider will make your force abilities weaker overall and ineffective against Dark Siders and Light Siders in general. I think that the grey jedi will be the final destination of the force users of star wars, because if anakin truly did balance the force by his sacrifice, then that means equal light AND dark. As long as the jedi and the sith both exist they will clash, and if only one exsists then it would mean the balance was toppled one way or the other. No Anakin did for a short period bring balance to the force when he killed the emperor if you look at the last movie before the force awakens what you'll find is that when Luke fought his father he had a moment where he use the Darkside when he drawed upon his anger to defeat his father and when he had the chance to kill him refuse to do so, considering he had the urge to kill his father when he threatened to use his sister and use her as part of the Empire to join the Dark Side, and with him killing the emperor he returned to his former State as a Jedi but then died leaving only a gray Jedi Luke Skywalker. Although one could argue that Anakin was a grey Jedi because he although he stayed in the light when he was in the Jedi Order he did use Darkside methods and go against some of the Light Side teachings while trying to preserve peace in the galaxy before his fall to the dark side. Actually I think the whole purpose of the Skywalker family was to show the Galaxy how to stay balanced in both the light and the dark side of the force and create an entity or organization of force users that kept the force in Balance but we all know how that turned out it'll be interesting to see what Disney does with the franchise.

If you think about it in Legends continuity Luke Skywalker is also kind of a Grey Jedi, mainly because he stated to his order that there is no good or evil technique of the force, it just depends on how you use it. Not to mention he was able to use techniques of the force that most Jedi from the past wouldn't even use ever because they are basically dark side based techniques. In fact I even made up a Star Wars character myself who was raised by a Jedi for lack of a better term hated the old system of the Jedi Order and kind of felt grateful that the Empire destroyed it.

Luke, on the other hand, had emotions and relationships beyond being a Jedi but still never fell to the Dark Side and became more powerful and wise than Yoda, Palpatine, or even his father could’ve been.

I thought that the Last Jedi movie was perfectly leading up to the development of the Grey Jedi in new canon when Rey and Kylo were having those mental links and joined forces in the battle against Snoke and his guards. It was a shame when nothing eventuated and some of the worst plot decisions followed shortly after when that avenue was abruptly cut off. I would have really enjoyed both Kylo and Rey sharing both sides of the force enacting their will of balance between the two conflicting factions as a third party.

I like to consider the Grey Jedi as the neutral faction, with the OG Jedi Lawful and Sith Chaotic (to a degree, not everything is black and white for Jedi or Sith. "ironic") but essentially, Grey Jedis don't devote themselves to either side, and with this, I like to think that they dont necessarily form a faction of their own, but that one each Grey Jedi are their own faction individually. They would be the type of people neither the Jedi nor the Sith would approve, and the Grey Jedi are often wandering across the Galaxy solo, there's no set destination for the Grey Jedi, there is only the flow between the Force, life, the admittance of ones own darkness but the strength to work with it, not be consumed by it. This could also mean that Grey Jedi wont have as much power as either a Sith or a Jedi who devote themselves to their respective side, but Grey Jedi have the greatest wisdom and understanding of both sides and that they rely on their own hard earned skills that can have them go toe-to-toe with Sith or Jedi, but neither overwhelm nor be underwhelmed in power - a truly balanced and neutral group. But that's just my tidbit, I'm not at all familiar with Star Wars unlike the OG fans, I just love the lore of this series so much. I might start a movie marathon and delve deep into the fandom sometime in the future.

Luke (in the EU) I thought was a Gray Jedi. I remember reading a book back in the day (can't remember which one) where it said that Luke (at the end of ep6) was a grey Jedi because he accepted his emotions (not giving up on Vader), dressed in all black and used Force Choking (which was a typical dark side of the force), but he obviously still had a strong moral compass

This video provides examples of groups and characters that fall within this category, from both Legends/EU and New Canon, while still using the established term "Grey Jedi", at least until a better term comes along. Jedi errors Emotion: they shape the living world, fear can help self preservation, love is fueling the expansion of life in sentient species, and although some people can do horrible things out of love, other will stand by their morals for the same reason Ignorance: contradicts some philosophy of the jedis, that a master is still a learner all his life. Without ignorance you would live on certitudes, because "you know". Ignorance can make you question things Passion: pass, sounds like a repeat of the emotion vs peace line Chaos: chaos tails order like its shadow. The universe was born out of chaos, with many random events building slowly into order. even the Force visions proves chaos is part of the force, since Yoda himself warns Luke how moving the future is, uncertain Death: maybe your death doesn't mean much to you as a Jedi because you join the Force afterwards, but that means the weaker beings lost someone to defend them. I feel that the Jedi ranks dwindled because of their " save everyone at all time" mentality Sith errors Peace is a lie. This alone is flawed. The Sith have spent so many years wasting their strenght, power, victories to jump at eachother's throat. You could even say Bane aknowledged peace and its benefits: he hid the Sith from the Jedis's sight for centuries, using peace as a way to mellow their vigilance, then unleashed the right amount of chaos when everything was ready through Sidious.

Ha I knew it. Haven't watched it yet but I kinda guessed the Grey Jedi will be introduced since either Rey will be turned Sith or become Grey thus titled "Last Jedi". I always loved the concept of walking between the force that was very prominent in VGs. Not only did it make for a great branching mechanic for choices and outcomes, it also becomes a great moral dilemna for the protagonist/antagonist themselves which is also why anti-hero stories are very good.
@ReadyComicsRoll7 жыл бұрын
Aron Estabillo Exactly! Also, a "Grey Jedi" doesn't even have to be an anti-hero or edge lord. All "Grey Jedi" really means is balanced, and there is nothing wrong with that. Don't get the pushback from some fans on this subject, as it makes the Star Wars universe deeper and more complex, which makes for more interesting story telling. Also, as you pointed out, it has worked well for the EU books and video games. Let's see what the future holds.

I've looked at the codes in this video in a philosophical manner in relation to the actions of the their respective orders. Before today I didn't know there was a Grey Jedi code, but reading it and applying it to the actions of Grey Jedi I can honestly say that was one of the most honest codes to date. Aside from the Sith code, which is extremely honest to one's believes and goals that one wishes to achieve by any means necessary, the Grey Jedi actually have something solid. The Jedi's code is fundamentally flawed on just about every level, its hard to fight to protect someone without feeling something. A duty or a responsibility may be one thing, but to be effective one must have something worth fighting for. A passion or something that comes close to an actual emotion, this has served the Sith extremely well in duels against other Jedi. However the issue there is they let their emotions run ramp-id, best comparison would be a berserker. Incredibly strong and powerful, but undisciplined and exploitable. Jedi have composure, but too much can impede their judgment to a degree. Grey Jedi don't fall into these extremes, while they have composure they can still draw from their emotions at specific times to increase their abilities greatly. In addition to keeping a level a head and a cool composure, in this instance think of Shaolin Monks. While still having the Buddhist views of the world, they do not shy away from standing their ground. Nor would they be completely above taking action in their own hands should it be absolutely necessary to attack in order to protect. Jedi would fall more in line with Buddhist priests, with some self-defense training. They tend to keep to themselves more often, Grey Jedi can as well but also will strike out without hesitation nor some kind of permission from a council of sorts should the situation be dire enough to warrant it. Jedi and at times Sith are bound by this as both have a ruling council, though in the defense of the Sith that's more like guidelines. They do whatever they want, so long as its for the best interest of the empire. Which is some what problematic in its own way with the in fighting as it is notorious for. But getting back on topic, Grey Jedi would have to undergo a level of training and conditioning to understand the intricacies of the force and far better emotional control when it comes to restraint. Far more intensive then Jedi Order could ever fathom.

The problem with them being fully cannon is that they are basically the perfect Jedi. The force is all about balance. And they have exactly that balance. If they where cannon then there is no reason why everyone shouldn't be like them. It just makes the conflict look silly. It is the ying and yang together as it should be as the Chinese martial art philosophy will say. Both the Sith and Jedi order are stupid in comparison. This grey dudes just make them look silly. Sith are over-sentimental packages full of hate and frustration that lost their logic. And the Jedi order Jedi are unsentimental robots that lost the ability to understand the world around them and the pain and suffering of living creatures. In reality there is no dark or white force. Is just the force. The only reason for the dark and white appearance is because of how people use it. Is like a screwdriver that one uses to only unscrew and open things up and the other uses just to screw down and close things up. Depending on how you see it the screwdriver may seem like a tool for closing things up or for opening things up. But in reality the screwdriver is just a screwdriver. There is no reason why it shouldn't just be used as one and do all sorts of jobs. And the one that can use it for doing everything a screwdriver can do whether closing things, opening things etc then is the only one that actually understands how to use a screwdriver well. The others are just fools that create conflict for no reason and can never use a screwdriver effectively and put it to good use.
