I am an India and there are four main reasons for Modi's popularity 1) his no nonsence approach to defence and foreign policy. As you mentioned, the foreign policy of his government is widely loved in the country. It is not that India's foreign policy has changed drastically, we were balancing US and Russia before we are doing it now. But now we feel we have a voice, thanks in big part to our foreign minister S Jaishankar's firey speeches. Fir defence i don't think I need to say something. The two sergical strikes on Pakistan, the stability in Jammu and Kashmir, speak for themselves. 2) His infrastructure building approach. It is well known Indian infrastructure was in a miserable state a few years back. As you mentioned the pace of highway building has nearly tripled. But you did not mention the quality. The new highways are of very high quality challenging some in the western world. Also, the number of airports has nearly doubled, the pace of metro construction has more than tripled. The transformation of railways with new stations and new trains are all happening and everybody and see it. The number of industries is steadily increasing because of this infrastructure push so obviously he is popular because of this. 3) The stupid opposition. I just don't understand why the oppositions parties can't get their act together. Rahul Gandhi can not defeat modi, they need someone else but they somehow don't understand that. They don't talk about actual issues but are stuck on some which don't work. Everytime I think that they have now learnt and this is the step in right direction, they do something and go two step back. Add ti ut Modi's gigantic party machinery which never fails to highlight even the smallest achievement if their governments and you have what you see now. 4) no scams/corruption. The previous government was riddled with scams worth billions. In these nine years Modi has managed to urn the government without a single scam. This aspect is given much less credit than it deserves.

Three things I notice: 1) Almost all these leaders feel like they come from outside of the regular political class. What makes someone a member of the political class is no doubt different in different countries, but it’s still recognisable. 2) There’s a feeling that these leaders cut through bureaucratic obstruction and actually get things done. This is connected to the first point. In many countries, there’s a feeling that the permanent bureaucracy does its own thing, regardless of who’s nominally in charge of the government. If the bureaucrats don’t want a policy to succeed, they’ll throw lots of inertial obstruction in its path until a regular politician just gives up. But these leaders seem to be forcing through popular changes, overcoming that inertia. 3) Voters aren’t really ideological, and these leaders recognise this. They want simple, big things dealt with, like crime or bad infrastructure. They don’t care if that means adopting an apparently right wing approach on one issue and a left wing approach on another.

@@artman12 He is not Pro-China, he is just sensibly not Publicly Anti-China for the political points like Morrison, Behind the Scenes logical moves are taken to ensure that there is as minimal safe risk from China as our country can reasonably achieve, such as continuing the nuclear sub deal. As for Taiwan basically the same, deal sure he could take on China and die on that hill alone, but again logically position is that we have relations with Taiwan whilst not starring the pot and causing backlash like every other country that isn't a military or economic juggernaut, taking on China for a do nothing stance like saying Taiwan is a country is a good way to see sanctions (like we did when Morrison our last one, who said there should be an investigation into the origins of COVID, a fairly benign statement), where they blocked the majority of trade like ore, coal, grain, wine etc, doing something as large as standing up to them on Taiwan you can expect a much harder push back, which would undoubtedly see the largely controlled by opposition news in Australia have a party at the negative press they can generate as they blame the inevitable economic downturn on "War mongering, and poor decision making" etc, likely tipping some people back onto the opposition and potentially costing the next election. So the decision to remain quiet until more than words are actually needed, is by far the sensible one, and continue to provide diplomatic relations through the Australian Office in Taipei (Australia's unofficial embassy in Taiwan) and the The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Australia, both agree is the best tactic for both countries (With Taiwan not really all that interested in being in the middle of having countries that China can start things over, without them being able to do anything in return, starting anything) But like basically all countries, at least with western ideals all support Taiwan even if their governments are smart enough to not say anything, nobody likes that thats the reality of the day, but it is, reality is the only countries that can publicly fight China without fear of repercussions are few in number. So TLDR (finally appropriate), most Australians are either stupid and listen to the bias media and assume since Labor is technically Left wing, they are commies, therefore support China, with little more thought required or they have some brain cells and understand that its a complex issue that requires nuance and the current stance is about the best we can muster until things change on the geopolitical/global stage.

Finnish presidents currently have barely any more power than European Monarchs. Kings and Queens often also have high approval ratings because they do not make any political decisions and instead mostly do ceremonial duties and soft-power advertising to foreign politicians and domestic citizens.

He has been iniciating a law to lower wages of polititians after he signed a law that lowers wages of retired people, as their wage was too high due to previous ruling parties, he also declared he doesn't need the full amount of presidential wage. Apart from this he has already visited Slovakia, Poland and Germany, where he showed great diplomatic skills. All of this aside he is leaning towards west and EU and heavily supports Ukraine. Long live our president!

To clarify, as a swiss person, the position of president in Switzerland is mostly ceremonial, the president holds very little power of internal affairs, which makes ot easy to think positively of them considering they can't do much harm. Also, the president changes every year, so most of the time your average swiss person doesn't even know who they are. Berset's popularity comes from the pandemic, during which he wasn't president but the health minister. He's generally seen as having handled the pandemic well, but a big part of his popularity is also superficial. He had memorable speeches and is seen as a friendly figure.

Also cool to see they mentioned the recent state election in NSW, but there was also a by-election in the state of Victoria that handed Albanese’s Labor party victory in a traditionally Liberal seat (the first time in over a hundred years the government’s won a by-election against the opposition). I can't speak for the rest of the politicians and nations mentioned on the list. But your segment of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and India seem poorly researched. Calling erstwhile Prime Minister Late Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a western educated technocrat is just false. He was a grassroot politician (meaning he rose through the ranks and was popular amongst the party workers) and was educated in India. Also, the current Prime Minister is not the only one to speak in Hindi. In fact a majority of Indian leaders on the national stage speak Hindi. Sure, a lot of regional leaders prefer addressing the public in the local language but those vary by region. Vajpayee was a poet and a writer who wrote in his native tongue Hindi and was an eloquent and impressive orator known for his unique delivery style. Modi on the other hand speaks Hindi with native proficiency but is from the region of Gujarat and his mother tongue is Gujarati. I understand that a lot of things can be lost in translation and cultural references do not travel well. But these are pretty well known facts that can be researched with relative ease. Therefore, it's slightly disappointing to see that your research team has let you down.

I see a common thread here for sure: populism. Each of those leaders has an "Other" they can rally their base against, and thereby galvanize unprecedented support. For the PM there is no such polling because finnish pollitics is mainly leb by a coalition of a few parties. There is not much sense in messuring popularity of single parties in this system.

Few things to point out from the outset: Being popular doesn't automagically mean being fair, competent, or generally a good leader... it can be a positive indicator though, that needs to be considered among a whole list of other things. After all, being extremely unpopular means you just can't do anything in a democracy, so it's best to be around the split or upwards. Impossible to have a common thread there as there are too many variables. Popularity ranges from cult of personality stuff, being the opposite of a very unpopular predecessor, the current state of politics in a nation, being very attuned to mainstream opinions, general charisma stuff, down to minute things like one major recent decision that gets the approval of the majority. People just have to keep in mind that lots of decisions that politicians could make that will affect the future of a nation can be incredibly unpopular because it directly affects citizens... particularly when it comes to either boring stuff like infrastructure reforms, all the way to economic reforms that affects the entire population negatively but might be essencial to avoid a collapse, those leaders will be unpopular even if the measures are necessary. And then there are decisions that needs to be made because of external factors, like being part of an economic block, and stuff like that. The ill effects of some of those could be tackled against a leader simply because he or she would be the convenient target. But we can look at extremes. I'm willing to bet that if an honest non-manipulated survey could be conducted in North Korea, with honest independent opinions not shaped by government, dear leader would still be extremely popular. Not because he's doing a great job as a leader, but because North Koreans grew up conditioned to see him as a living God on Earth. He's divinity to them, much like religious people see their own saints and Gods. That is the extreme of cult of personality of course... people working to death, skin and bones from hunger, watching the country as it trails this route towards total and complete destruction by a future war, will still adore their leader because they don't think they are in a position to judge. Further, they don't even know what having other leaders would be like, there is no basis for comparison, and they usually don't know enough of what happens in leadership, in their own nation, or outside of it, to really tell things apart.

Mia is seen by most Barbadians as vocal leader, and welcomes her speaking up about important issues across the world stage. Plus in 2022 her political party the Barbados Labour Party retained power, plus won all 30 parliamentary seats.

I think the trend in these leaders is that they all get things done and change their countries in ways that are objectively good. Everybody likes better infrastructure like roads and water, everybody likes less crime, everybody likes the deterrence of invaders. And all of these changes are happening quickly and are noticable. Way fewer people care about politicians that spend their time on controversial laws that have uncertain effects in 20 years from now. But Western Europe for example is not (really) at war, has good infrastructure and is pretty safe. So apart from the economy which is tricky to deal with, the most prominent matters are socio-cultural ones. And those usually cause divisions and have smaller and more indirect impacts on (living standards in) a country.

Most people in the donbass are under Russian occupation. Hell, actually Russias mistake started already in 2014 when they took over Crimea and the big cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. That meant that millions of pro-Russian voters were stripped from being able to take part in Ukrainian politics. Before 2014 the country was pretty 50-50 on pro-west and pro-russia. I am from Mexico and I expected Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to be in here, since most polling shows him above 55%, and that is remarcably worse than his previous 70% approval ratings he had in previous years.
