There's an answer to one of your questions in Rapi's bond strory (spoilers bellow) She talks about how the 1st Nikke's were more combat effective thanks to their more machine like build with many enchancments and build in weapons. This however had a bad effect on the brain inside the machine making most of them go insane. Think cyberpsychosis from cyberpunk. You can kind off see this with snow wyhite and her more robot/prosthetic parts.

@@LordMetalSonic1987 I'm calling it now, Raptures are man made monsters similar to skynet, and Nikke's are basically supposed to be the Rapture's next counter part model, that's designed to interact with one another, basically Nikkes are supposed to serve as the Rapture's commander.

make sense since it the first war, whoever been task to built it probably been given a blank check and just goes nuts, current iteration probably close to mass produce type after taking into account of mental health of nikke [lol] and lower the production cost

in the Story Rapi explains that most Nikke use "conventional" external weaponry and in general less equipment that looks so sci-fi (so no extra limbs or wings etc) in an effort to convince themselves that they're still at least somewhat human. Same reason why they eat, sleep, shower etc despite the fact they don't actually need to as it's not uncommon for a Nikke to loose her mind once she becomes too fixated on essentially being a fancy brain in a jar. The Pioneers are probably just remnants of older models that were strong willed or determined enough to learn to live with what they'd become while Inherit have kinda gone the extra mile and for the most part see themselves as the "next stage", they know they're not human but to them it's a superiority and as such doesn't drive them mad to go as far as adding wings and even more mechanically upgraded limbs.

Lost technology most likely, sometimes during wartimes it's not that we dont know how its made its that we don't know how to make the machines needed to make it. Kinda how a big secret to CPU manufacturing isn't the CPU themselves but the machinery is whats the heavily guarded secret. Precision machines are sometimes the big factor. WW2 Germany may have designed neat weapons but the US dominated above everyone in manufacturing technology. Efficient assembly, advanced machining and consistent output. The Pioneers were likely created during a peak of human technology but as the war progressed territory is lost and the factories with it as well as the machines and personnel with the knowledge to operate it.

Pilgrims are thrived from the ashes, born with extreme talent, strength, each of them have significant existence in combat compare to other manufacturers, extreme heals, damage, even invisibility. Sounds legit when they are not available in wishlist but also disappointed

Skipping the ill effects on early Nikke's brains, maybe expenditures on those extremely armed units were too much. Especialy when lost by (in comparison), commanders trained on mass, as fast as possible and probably on cheap. It just wasn't worth it, although maybe those expensive weapons were assigned to those who showed more talent and survived at least few missions on surface. Probably spewing bs, since I'm mid chapter 9 but from what I learned from affection stories, chapter notes and campaign so far it makes sense in my head. From then on, form of insanity had time to form in those early "Pilgrims" heads.

Maybe it is wrong to asdume that every pilgrim is on the same level of firepower than snow white, maybe the current state of pilgrims work the same way evolution does, there were powerfull Nikkes that eventually were left on the surface an only the strobgest of them survived, now they are called pilgrims
