From my personal experience, Australian tourists are pretty chill and friendly. They're really curious too, and are open to learn more about my country. Brits are pretty nice, they're respectful and tend to mince their words especially when talking about things they don't understand about my country. Americans.. are friendly, but they tend to be loud. There was a time when I was riding a bus and it was dead silent except for a family of American tourists. At first I thought that they were being purposely rude, but the more I listened the more I thought that they just don't have an inside voice..

As an Australian, the reason why we get a bad reputation as tourists is because of the quality of people. Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam (South-east Asia) are the cheapest places to go to from Australia, since they're the most affordable destinations, you get a lot of rowdier young people wanting to party and get drunk. I'm going to bet Aussie tourists in Europe/US or East Asia (China, Korea, Japan) are more well behaved.

And to be fair, the places I've met Aussie tourists are usually the kind of places where you bring your whole family to like beaches, nature, historical sites etc, maybe that's why they're more chill. IBIZA MENTIONED. I work as a receptionist in a hotel and the British moms are one of the worst clients we have. They complain about everything all the time even when the thing they are complaining is the standard. And then you have the french that don't even try to communicate with you in an other language that is not french even when they are in another country where almost no one speaks french.

@@porcorosso4330 I know what are you saying and I encourage it but in my case for example, I work in a 3 star hotel that the clients pay dirty cheap prices trough agencies and they expect the same class and standards of a luxury 5 star hotel. In my experience all the british clients we usually have in the island expect that we locals threat them like kings even when they are paying a misery.

I was solo travelling in Japan in 2019 and, as an Italian, I'm naturally quite loud when I talk and yes, also hands. I did my absolute best to tone down my voice every time I was around, and was very careful not to inconvenience people in the metro. During my last days in Tokyo, I was riding next to an American couple who needed to get off at least three metro stops earlier. How did I know? They were talking SO LOUD about their business everyone was just aggressively staring at them, and in 5 minutes I learned half of what they were planning to do. The couple realised I was the only Western-looking person in the car and approached me to help them out in English, which I was very happy to do...except when they yelled "I'M SORRY YOU'RE SPEAKING SO SOFTLY I CAN'T HEAR YOU?" when I was explaining. I swear I saw at least six people breaking their frown into a smile witnessing me experience second-hand embarassment in a culture that isn't even mine...

Whispering/keeping your voice down is a rare activity in the USA. The only time its considered polite to bother is in movie theaters or libraries. 95% of the time Americans are whispering, its because they are saying something a bit embarrassing or gossipy, and so have chosen to lower their voice. In a weird reversal, I think this makes whispering considered somewhat rude in the USA.

Whenever I've been abroad and heard fellow Brits be loud or obnoxious, I've always walked over to try and sought the situation out, and then felt so embarrassed that I have to apologise on their behalf, Europe most people are used to it though

I am Australian and you are right. But, there are two types of Australian tourists. There are the bogans/larikans and then there are those who are more respectful and polite. Unfortunately there are more bogans than those who are respectful. When I travel I normally say I'm from New Zealand. And that gets me around a lot of problems.

The worst part about my fellow french is that only 10 maybe 15% of the population speak english fluently. That's like the basic thing to do before traveling but at school, in a class of 30 kids you will only have 2-3 students, 5 if it's a good class, that practice and want to improve in English. Beside being impossible to understand in another country, we are pretty respectful in foreign country. We like and learn a lot about our history so generally we like to lean history and culture of other countries.

Despite their reputation, the American tourists that we get here during cruise ship season are absolutely lovely. They overwhelmingly polite and cheerful, if a bit naive. If anything, it's a bit of a culture shock/letdown for them when they experience how Vancouver doesn't live up to the "nice" stereotype sometimes. But yes, the worst by far are the ones that come from that big place across the ocean where all the container ships come from....

As an Spanish person who is from the Canary Islands, people here are just tired of all tourists. Our economy depends on then but at the same time this business model is making our lives miserable. As far as Mallorca and Ibiza people from there are just disgusted at this point. There’s a thing we call balconing, where for some fucking reason drunk brits throw themselves from high balconies into the pools, and sometimes they hit the floor around it instead. Why do I say this? Because some people there say that the summer season starts when the moment someone looses their lives over this each year. (No joke, it’s weirdly common)

Went on a school trip to france recently and was at the saturday market. We bought some posters and the guy at the stall was trying to ask us if we wanted it wrapped. It took us a while of decifering until someone finally remembered that the word he was saying had something to do with gifts. But bro, the french people were so nice, they were trying so hard to help us understand and trying to speak to us in english where they could and it was honestly so nice. It wasnt like we were anywhere big, we were in Dieppe at the very edge of the country

On top of that, French people are overall fairly confrontational culturally. Not in a bad way. I've been to France a couple times now, and I have to say that the people I've met have been wonderful. I was nervous, because you hear such horror stories and my ability to speak French may actually be less than zero. But in Lyon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, and yes, even in Paris, almost universally, people were just lovely. Of course, I've also had great luck with meeting wonderful people in New York City, too, and they get a bad reputation for being rude.

There is a generational gap in those chinese tourist. A lot of them are grandmas/pas from the old/poor generation when they had a very harss environment. The retirement age in China is 60 for males and 55 for females, so a lot of them make big groups and just travel around the world after the economic boom that the country has experienced in the recent 20 years. A lot of those tourist are basically villager folks who don't know that much about outside customs and just go around with their own way. If you meet youngster from the 90s (even from the 80s), I bet you they would behave much more restraint or "polite" than those people from the old generation. So just expect that the manners of that group of people to improve in the coming years.

Agreed. I would add that any 4+ group of 18-30 year olds is often there for the wrong reasons. Couples, solo travellers, small groups of backpackers are usually OK.

Also, a group of loud drunk people are far more identifiable as a nationality than a quieter, smaller group. Fun fact, due to Japan's absolutely booming economy in the 70s and 80s, many could afford to travel more and taking pictures was popular because all the most high end and popular cameras came from Japan, so they were familiar with the tech.

This still exists, I remember even the news covering it here in Finland. Apparently Japanese tourists love to take pictures of young blonde kıds without permission enough to make it into the news, not sure if any chasing was a part of it. Also adding that they apparently do this also when you travel to Japan. My dad was there for a business trip and was just minding his own business when some people started taking pictures of him. He decided to do it back to them and they were so shocked. Like do they have no self awarness, do they not understand that that's how they're treating others??

Bali is Australia's universe sandbox, the only place where the interior has no adhan and people could have premarital intercourse without getting judged and where pork are ubiquitous although food handling is one of the worst in terms of hygiene in tourism level. Bad Tourists story: I was flying from Bali to Jakarta back in 1999 and a pack of Dutch tourists (yeah, Dutch, the former colonizers of Indonesia) were being so loud and obnoxious (most likely drunk), they had the Indonesian military meet the plane. I was the first person off that jet and those military guys looked so pissed off, I just got the hell out of there. God only knows what happened to those idiots....

Unfortunately the Australian tourists in Bali have a really bad reputation due to the fact that it's quite affordable compared to Europe or America, which attracts what we call bogans. Getting drunk and obnoxious etc, and most of them tend to gather on the same beaches. The locals have to tolerate their behaviour since tourism is the lifeblood of Bali, sadly.

I was once riding the subway in Busan and a Latin tourist, (i couldnt discern if she was from Spain or Latin America), was talking a MILE a minute to her friend. Sometimes subways get a bit chatty with the older folks, but its generally pretty quiet. Well, an ajusshi (Korean middle aged or older man), finally snapped and started SCREAMING at her to shut up, and she looked like she was about to piss herself. The double standard here though is sometimes a group of older Koreans will chat up a storm on the train or subway and nobody besides their spouse or company employees have a chance in hell to get them to simmer down.

@@sinnaras9120Essentially, if a country was not doing well economically, then many people within that country would not have the funds to travel. So people will not have experience traveling and most people they know will not have experience traveling. But if the economy begins to recover and do much better, then even some of the poorer people in the country will suddenly have the funds to travel. But they have no experience being in foreign lands, do not know anyone who could explain how to conduct yourself in a foreign place, and yet suddenly they can go anywhere and do so. There’s a learning curve in how to NOT be an obnoxious tourist.

When I was talking to our Airbnb hosts in Japan during our trip in April 2019, they told us that the ones that they don’t like were Chinese or Koreans. In Osaka, we were exploring the Osaka Museum that is by Osaka Castle. Anyways, as we are walking around, there is a group of school kids, roughly junior high, ahead of us. Now I assumed at first that there were Japanese, but as we paid more attention to them, they seemed very rowdy, were very loud, touching everything and as we got closer to them I realized that they weren’t speaking Japanese. Also, we took note that a security guard was also kind of trailing us; which I assumed he thought maybe we were Americans (Canadians actually) and didn’t want us damaging anything. But as we are going, we start to realize he’s more so following the students. As we get near the end, I leaned over to my husband and said softly “I think those students are Korean. Or at least that’s what it sounds like they are speaking” Before my husband can respond, the security guard, who I had not realized was really close to us, said in an annoyed tone “yes they are Korean. I’ve been following to make sure they behave and not break anything” We were shocked how good his English was, and he even asked us where we were from in Canada; we had luggage tags with the Canadian flags on our back packs in case we ever misplaced them. But he also said that when Chinese and a Korean students visit they usually have him watch over them. And finally the second thing, was I walked into a bathroom at a train station in Osaka, and the one stall is covered in shit. It was as if someone took a poop, purposefully missed the squat toilet and then finger painted it all over the stall. A Japanese woman then walked in and I pointed at the messy stall and said “don’t use, very gross”. She looks confused, pokes the door open and steps back aghast. Before I can even say anything else, she says in perfect English “Fucking Chinese people!” Then she turns around and walks out.

As an American, I don't necessarily think we're the worst ~in general,~ but I think we have a bad rep for a reason. We are loud. I'm even quiet by American standards, but just the base volume in any average American communal setting is louder than any I've experienced in Europe or Asia. However, I think that those of us who are aware of this reputation and the reasons for it take extra steps to be sure that we're not contributing to the problem. A self-aware American tourist might be one of the loveliest people you'll ever meet. A bad American tourist may be the worst. What I will say is that once I was in a cafe in Bakewell with one of my friends (also American). The waiter heard us talking and came up and asked us if we were Canadian. We felt so flattered. Who are the worst tourists? Jury's still out, but it's definitely not Canada!

Australian tourists...well let me tell you, on our honeymoon, a KonTiki tour through England, Scotland and Wales 75% of the bus was crazy wild looking to party Australians. Us laid back Americans didn't know what to make of it all, then we started talking to them and we came to find out when they showed us their version of the KonTiki brochure, a bunch of drunk kids in togas partying vs the US brochure, people taking in the sights, walking through castles... it was the same tour, it was just sold to them as a booze/sex tour.... which for them it was.

From my personal experience English people in Prague - super loud, super annoying, super offensive and they always try to play on your nerve, being drunk af. When I was in Japan i met a lot of Australians because they came up to me to small talk and they were all so friendly and nice and it was my first time meeting Australians, but they left me a very good impression. You find nice and not so nice people from everywhere. Working in Chile I could say that Spanish tourists tended to be the most obnoxious, they looked down on the staff a lot. Worst body odor came from old german people. Lovely people though. Chinese people were super demanding, but we could handle them. Lastly, Chilean tourists tended to expect things we didn't have or services we did not provide. So they complained quite a bit too.

Having just got back from Japan, my wife and I had been planning this trip most of our lives, did our research, have respect for the culture and found it hilarious how many times we went "Fucking tourists" when another tourist group were being obnoxious or oblivious, only to have to go "wait, we're tourists too, but we're not that kind of tourist" We found like Joey said that if you show a willingness to try and be respectful the locals relax so much more around you. My wife found that just by going out of her way to try and give correct change and use Japanese greetings everyone was so much happier to help if we got stuck with the language barrier. The worst groups we saw were American and Russian. I remember at the Peace park in Hiroshima an obnoxious group of Russians that kept ringing the bell like it was a toy. Everyone around them looked so uncomfortable, but they were oblivious and took turns slamming the bell and laughing their heads off. Or the tourists that would not only walk down the middle of tori gates, but stop there for extended photo shoots.

I'm from the States. One of my goals when traveling is not to be the "Ugly American." I'm crap with language, but I try to at least learn some basic greetings & such. I try not to be offensive. And though plenty stupid, I try not to be a nuisance. I was surprised while traveling in Europe that many people didn't seem to have negative feelings about folks from the US. Often the expected hostility was reserved for the British. And now, having experienced a lot of British tourists in Europe, I understand why. Most of the time when they're in the States, they're fine. But in Europe...yikes. Especially in Spain. I pretty much knew if I heard someone complaining loudly, it was going to be a British person. I don't run into a lot of Australian tourists, but those that I have met have generally been lovely folks. Of course, I've never gone to a ski lodge. Nobody seems to talk about it, maybe because they almost never travel far, but I'd actually argue Canadians generally and people from Quebec specifically are actually the worst tourists. Everything wrong with American and British tourists all wrapped into one, without any of the cultural cache to back it up (wrongly or not). Often jaw-droppingly culturally ignorant and vaguely xenophobic, they tend to have no understanding that they're not still in Canada. I used to work in customer service in a place where about 50% of our business was Canadian, and you would not believe the kinds of things they'd say and do. Even today, I know people in tourism who say Canadians rank among their least favorites. And as awful as American "tipping culture" is, when traveling here, you've got to know about it. Canadian tourists are notorious for not tipping, so anyone who works in restaurants, guiding, or any other tip-heavy industry hates them. I think there's a big difference between being polite and being nice, and maybe Canadians are more polite than nice? But I think there's also the same problem as with Midwesterners. If a Canadian tourist is from anywhere other than perhaps Vancouver or Toronto, maybe they just don't have the experience with other cultures. After all, the population of the entire nation of Canada is only like five times that of New York City. I also think, like folks from the U.S., that Canadians don't travel so much, and when they do, they travel to primarily English speaking countries, like the U.S. and England. So, perhaps they don't have as much chance to make asses of themselves on an international stage. I've got a friend from Alberta who can be exasperating to talk to, because he seems unable to grasp that things outside of his very small town could possibly work differently. He took a train once and didn't enjoy it, therefore, people should just drive cars. There's a sidewalk between his house and his downtown, therefore there must be sidewalks connecting everything anyone would ever want, so why would people complain about a lack of pedestrian infrastructure. The average 30 year old corporate worker here earns between 1000usd to maybe 2000usd a month which doesn't leave much room for travel budget. For instance, I have Singaporean relatives that can visit Japan on a whim with little to no effect on their normal daily expense whereas I saved for an entire year before my solo trip last November. So when we get a chance to travel, we're just generally super duper happy and grateful. Plus, weather in a lot of places is also nicer than our constant tropical humidity.

Go back, learn spanish (or alternatively, some manners), then try to come back. Basically it's okay to be a tourist and have no idea about anything just don't be a dick about it. For me I don't have an issue with a group of people but there will be those certain individuals that will ruin it for the rest. I'm minding my own business at a bar, sitting down after practicing pool. This group comes and I had no problem. I can tell their tourists. Then this one older dude came in and I could sense he was trouble. I just stuck to myself with my personal Que stick in hand. They began to rack up and the older guy tried to make conversation with me. I was sort of polite and stuck to my phone. The table is racked up and the guy is about to go. For some reason this guy thought is would be a good idea to grab my stick and play as if we were friends. I told him this was my stick, he said "no worries you will get it back". I stared him down and told him to back off. He backed off immediately. I went outside after that. Thankfully a friend was there and he calmed me down.

There are alot of cases where when asians that are not from China acting like idiots and was caught red handed the first thing they say are that they are from China. Theres a alot of videos where Koreans doing that.

Britsh tourists love algarve, with is the south of Portugal where the best beaches are. Back when i was a kid that was full of British tourists, now that 10 or so passed after my last vacation there i still hear from friends and people from there that it's basically a British colony at this point😂

From my experience, French and Chinese (specifically from mainland China) tourists are the worst. Yes, I do notice and hone in when I hear American accents as well. Heard a bunch of my countrymen at the biggest tourist spots like Tsukiji.

Chinese no doubt. Work in retail here in aus some dont bother trying english straight up speaking chinese and im like im not (im vietnamese btw) or use translator devices half working. When i was in japan for holiday with friends who are chinese also agree cos we would see em doing more or less the same things that i go through. Hell the cleaning lady for our bnb who was giving us the rundown of rules keys and stuff was half talkin shit about me in chinese apparently cos im just over here trying to figure out what shes trying to say and mean while being clueless of course but whatevs. Thats just my experience. Though im sure any nationality that gets drunk is worst

I work at a airport that sees about 50,000 flying out on a normal day and I can say there's 1 common dinominator in what they're talking about and when I say they always give me the hardest time.
