The game considers stage spikes to be the same as actual spikes (for purposes of the spike-only bottom blastzone mechanic). Therefore, I think stage spikes should also count in this challenge.

It seems like it was almost impossible for ESAM to win a game while having landed a spike in the midst of the game. He either lands a spike or a couple of spikes and loses the game or he lands no spikes and wins the game.
