What do you do? What did you do to get local market status and does that mean you can rent on the local market?

@Arctic Foxman My daughter works in finance. If it's an occupation with a skill shortage, a permit is available. A family member permit is then available for any members of your family that come with you. If you have a permit you can buy or rent on the local market. We currently rent. After seven years a permit is no longer required and you are a Guernsey citizen. Check on that though because I recall reading that it might be dropping to 5 years. Be warned regarding house prices if you want to buy. They are VERY high.

@@luisagouveia5527 What's false info. You can work in Guernsey without a permit, under some circumstances but you have to live in an open market property. Rather than local market if you have a permit. It's now 6 years of established residency, by the way, before permanent residency. If wrong, please enlighten us?

Wow didn't know it was so complicated. But having been born there and lived there for nearly the first 30 years of my life I suppose I'd be OK. But at my age there's no way I can come back. Great information Ross.

Having close ties or family means ZERO in trying to get local market status. I know people whose family go back generations who have not been given it and even families from Alderney and Sark want to move the few miles across are not allowed. However if you know a deputy they'll be able to get you a licence at the drop of a hat as an essential worker, like their gardener or someone to iron their socks.

It's about the only job that would've qualify for local market essential worker. The island has 1% wealthy, controlling the island and the tax situation keeping the majority of the islanders poor and disgruntled, mainly those who aren't on the housing ladder. Most people coming to the island & getting local market licences serve the wealthy. Gardeners, cleaners and one woman I met said ironing for some finance sector guy. Probably listed her as "Carer", I couldn't ascertain because she didn't speak much English. Estate agents aren't needed plenty of them..

No. Well you could apply but you'd not be accepted. The best way is to apply for a job. Employers seem to be able to scam local market status for anyone.

Err.... yeah, houses are dearer than London. Even local market prices are insane. I've heard that people are heading back to UK due to the housing crisis. My daughter and me are still in rented after 3 years.
