Who Can Worship Kali?

Many who are attracted to the aspect of the Divine known as Ma Kali, Nataraja, Bhairava or even Gopala will sooner or later come across the narrative that the worship of these aspects is a closed practice that only certain groups of people have access too and that if you attempt it, you might incur harm. What's that about? Is there something to this idea? Over the weekend, I visited Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati at the Kali Mandir in Laguna Beach and I discussed these ideas with revered Swamiji. I pass on to you now some the ideas he so graciously shared with me!
In this short discussion, we make a few remarks distinguishing the Bhakti practice, which is open to one and all even without initiation, vs a Tantrik Sadhana, which requires Diksha, initiation. Also, we say a few things about the commercialisation and commodification of Ma Kali in modern new age circles.

I have been in love with Mother Kali for over fifty decades. She has been there for me as an intimate for almost all of that time. If you reach out to her with true devotion and yearning like that of a desperate lover, she will come to you and change you. No one, no group owns Divinity! What gibbering nonsense! When she does come, she will change your life like a whirlwind so, you had better be ready for that force to enter into your life. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa taught us that loving divinity does not mean that you must adopt ritual behaviors, study Sanskrit or even attend pujas. Learn a basic worship style and make a murti for Kali in your heart and keep her in your thoughts. Let the fools debate their dogmas and who is entitled to worship her. If you are sincere, loving and persistent, she will come.

I am black american woman and i have always loved Kali Ma. I cant remember when. I try all different religions and worship styles but i can let go of Kali. She is my only one and I do feel like her daughter. I actually wanted something more "light" and "pretty". I truthfully dont know where to start and I always tried to walk away from her because I did not want to disrespect her nor South Asian traditions. I hope that the path clears. If i have to spend my life in just devotion and respect to her that is enough... I am an Indian and after hearing your comments i can meke out that this is not ordinary. The one's who feel Kali Maa are special. I would advise you that if possible, once come to India. In the state of West Bengal, there is Kolkata. There's a temple devoted to Kali - Dakshineswar Kali Temple. I assure u, you will be blessed by her.

Try chanting Devi mahatmyam, 1 lesson (don't stop in between a lesson ) per day you can find english online. You can find your life upside down but keep calm and trust her. Use a picture and a ghee lamp for her, if available decorate with flowers in fridays and Tuesday

Ma Kali is the one and only in my heart. I feel an immense mothering from her. When my childhood traumas in this life surface throughout my adulthood, she is there to allow release / crying and she makes me feel safe while doing this. I was raised to not cry or show much emotion, so I internalize it all. Ma Kali has done for me what many therapist's could not. It is not all releasing of pain either. I feel an immense love from her when I am happy and pure love is everything. When I view her as the begining of it all. Your description of family, regional, national, and personal deities reminds me of the Catholic concept of Patron Saints.

I went a very similar path to yours, it's curious that you traversed Hellenistic pantheism, in my case I have theological beliefs inspired by Kabbalistic, Shaivistic and Neoplatonic panentheism, yet I feel very inclined to a "pagan" praxis (Dionysus), or bhakti (Shiva, and Kali in particular). Thank you so much!!! As a woman that was born into Christianity and raised in a prejudiced area of the U.S. I have been struggling recently with openly practicing my devotion to Maa Kali. I have been practicing Hinduism for around 20 years, but only within myself. Never any outward sign. But as I get older, I will be turning 60 next month, I find it more and more important that I don't hide my devotion to the divine feminine. I have been afraid that wearing a simple bindi or having mendhi work done would be frowned upon by the Indian/Hindu community. I have avoided going to a temple out of fear that I might not be welcome. But through what you have said here and what others I have recently found have said, I am now comfortable. I wear a simple bindi to remind me to keep Maa Kali, Maa Lakshim, and Maa Durga in my thoughts throughout the day, and to strengthen my devotion to them. I have no interest in Tantrik practices, but Bhakti practice on the other hand suits me extremely well. Once again, thank you, my friend. You have helped me today more than you can know.

I tried to avoid Kali for many years, focusing on Shiva or Ganapati, until she wouldn't disappear and I was forced to sit up and take notice. That's a long story though. When she came into my life I was immediately introduced to someone who taught me sadhana from Kamakhya but it was years before I got diksha and then it was from the Sri Vidya Kula before I got it in the Kali kula and am now, 6 years later, finally learning pooja from the Kamakhya temple lineage. Quite a powerful and intense choice to consciously be a Kali Upasaka but at the same time, it's not really our choice...lol

Thank you for making this video.When it first came across my feed, I quickly scrolled past. I was scared that it was going to say that if you're not part of the culture, then it's cultural appropriation, or whatever reason that I wasn't allowed to pursue a deeper relationship with her. Ma Kali has been inspiring and comforting to me and when I turned away because I was worried about being respectful, she came and found me. I am learning how to do spirituality without the dogmatic religeon of my childhood and I am so grateful for your enthusiastic encouragement to (baring unsupervised tantra practices) worship/love Kali in whatever way you are called to or feels right. I love ShivJi and Ganapathī. But Kalī stole my heart the most. She's so protective, and loving. Also, thank you for talking about why it is not a good idea to do any sort of worship of an aspect of God without diksha. When I started practicing Sanatana Dharma in 2021, I made the stupid mistake of worshipping Kalī pretty intensely for three evenings. On the 3rd evening, I like I was struck by lightning. And I literally went mad. Other things transpired, and the only reason I didn't end up in a psychiatric hospital or worse was because of Divine Mother's Grace. Thank you ji, for an informative video. I’m a white American from Oklahoma. I’ve been doing meditation retreats for the past year and doing meditation for almost 3 years daily I just left a retreat where I had a moment where there was an Energy that was moving my body and my head like a snake. I was also being made to make hand gestures that I did not understand. I also was noticing that this movement of energy energy within my head was writing something out that I did not understand like a long sentence. Use my face as it was drawing the words with my nose. I was talking to someone at the retreat about what was happening to me. I was talking to them. I said I wonder what this is. And then I heard the word Kali. I’ve heard of this word, but I looked it up. There’s no doubt about it. That is what I’m directly experiencing. I have no understanding at all of Kali. Yet I’m having a direct experience with it. I also understand it’s just an aspect of the divine. I understand why I’m connected to it. it’s not because I knew of it, read about it, studied it. What I realize now is I committed years ago to understanding the true essence of nurture. I studied it. I’ve learned what it’s not and right before I had the experience with this energy I solved a piece of the puzzle of what nurture is not that I have worked for 49 years. it says if I became it because I understand it without worship

Truth is. Everyone can worship her. She is the ultimate reality, all things are her. Therefore, we are all already worshipping her. She gives mankind and her devotees all they need, not always what they want tho. She blesses all, unconditionally, regardless of them being believers or not, she does not discriminate. I have just started. I was initiated by my gurudev with the mantra of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. I am deeply attracted to Maa Kali. I do my Japa as instructed. I am facing a lot of troubles in my life, in my career, and health prospects. I feel Maa is taking a very difficult examination of mine, I listen to Dakshina Kali's stotro every day. But there is no one to help me in the tantra journey of Maa Kali. My guru told me to read scriptures, but Sanskrit again is an issue. I don't know, I am lost. Before I was feeling attraction to Ananda Mai Ma and later I found that I was feeling Kali from her. For me they are the same. I feel deep relaxiation and also fear when I see Kali in the pictures. I feel deep energy aweking in me and I just love to surrender. Yesterday I was looking at how I can worship to Kali and There was a text saying you can just say Om Kali Om Kali as a mantra. Also I found this video, you explain better than other videos. Thank you.

Kali has repeatedly come into my life over and over again. I am American Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu. I feel strange as her worship is not popular in my family or in my village in Sri Lanka. My mother died when I was very young, so I feel very connected to Maa Kali. The commodification of her image is something I am very uncomfortable with, as I feel Americans romanticize or do not fully understand her true force and treat her as an “energy” instead of a Goddess. I am an American woman who identifies as Wiccan, I recently had a very powerful experience with Kali-Maa. My religion is very neo-peganism new age and teaches us a bit about every religion. My main Goddess matron is The Morrigan Irish goddess of war, sovereignty, fate. There's some magic and fertility aspects to her as well. Anyway I inherited some of her abilities spiritually so whenever I get emotional I can get destructive and even bloodthirsty. This show on the physical world but more when I'm astral traveling or on spiritual plane. I've also had trouble with balancing my light, Devine energy my higher self with my dual nature. I have also known much pain in life. Despite this I have the ability to communicate with the divine in many diff forms. Recently I had a past life regression triggered and it had a snowball effect of me getting rid of karmic debt as I'm told I'm about to ascend after this life, my spirit being 1000 years old. I started seeing a lot of snakes and sun symbols one of which my mother goddess used on me a while back but did not look Celtic and have been trying to find the source. I have seen Kali, but for a while have tried my HARDEST to avoid her, even frightened of Kali. But she has been near me these past few days. I finally let her in because I got tired of seeing her CONSTANTLY. Um she seems to be focusing on my bloody aspect I try hard to hide, saying that "I see a darkness in you that not even your mother can contain" "you cannot spiritually ascend if you deny this part of you" Kali.. energy is... How do I say even more firey then that of The Morrigan or Hekate of Greek pantheon? I've been wired for days!🥺 Feeling the insanity aspect of myself too, (the kind that laughs uncontrollably, the bloodthirsty aspect) Kali activated all 7 of my chakras especially around the heart. Been feeling with unresolved grief from a death in my family. I did smell rot or fire during this time that wasn't explainable. Right before she showed up I was dealing with energy from a karmic connection and started imitating her in spirit without realizing it? Felt very fiery, like holding an unknown head, and randomly sticking my tongue out, which felt like it was burning. My goddess The Morrigan had even admitted to "calling in Kali to help deal with you" I don't think I'm meant to be a worshipper but it does feel like there is a collaboration between my goddess and Kali behind the scenes? But why is she here? I've gone through many death cycles with my goddess a few with Hekate but now Kali seems to be... The big guns? The final boss 😅 help please, I know nothing. Kali seems like she wants to stay. Despite my being owned by diety A, is she here as a new teacher? What can I do to respect Kali without angering my mother goddess I have sworn to? I am so confused! Google doesn't help at all. All I know is; I NEED to know more, need to learn what Kali-Maa has to teach, I want to run from her, and yet I am pulled, I feel like I'm going crazy.

I've never studied about Indian gods. I'm here today because while I was in meditation I saw myself in the form of what I learned was kali. It's interesting what I've learn about her so far. Kali seems in general to represent a big part of the religion I practice.
