This was fantastic, Mark!! I’ve shared with friends and relatives who have border collies and Aussies like mine! I guess I was doing it right with letting my boy sniff around on walks and taking it easy then everyone is happy!!❤

Instead of making my dogs walk faster, I decided to get better exercise by adding a weighted belt/vest. We walk at a variety of different paces and they get smell time when they need it. I just added a third little old lady from the rescue. Each of my three dogs has a bungee connected to the main leash and I love how it works. Thanks for the extra tips!

Really like the bungee leash. I will try and find one on Amazon. Thank you for showing us walking with your dogs. I dont see it as training more like educationg your dogs. Love it ❤

I see it as a team activity too...at times I let them do as they want and correct or alert them if something needs attention...I am more of their 'watchdog' and call out when it's really urgent...they totally understand that but this kind of trust takes time and patience on both sides...

Taking your dog to a new environment is draining for them! Went to a night market with my boy for about an hour, of course we weren’t continuously walking the entire time but the different noises and smells completely tired his little but out unlike anything I expected. He slept for 2 days!

Yes..in the beginning i.joined a group of dog owners and we did many new places and at times overnights...what I realised is the next morning the dogs would be all nerves, and that in turn would turn us, ( the owners) anxious.. A bit of novelty is okay, but it's not something that most dogs enjoy...i learnt this over time...

This was helpful. We adopted a 1 yr old heeler aussie mix 2 months ago. She is very attached to me already. She has great house manners but she is wild and anxious outside. She is reactive on leash and at fences. Your videos have helped me relax and not stress about correcting her behavior as much being calm. I’ve seen a change in her crazy at the fence; when I come over to her she calms down! Great sign she trusts me to take care of it. On walks my instinct has been to let her smell because she is so repressed in the yard. This video gives me great practical examples of pulling back when she’s overstimulated. She is nowhere near Johnny’s state though. It’s been 2 months of twice daily walks (rain or shine). She is still crazy. I’m hoping it’s that she’s new to me and building trust…and maybe she’s in a fear period…?

Great thank you so much , just to clarify if the dog goes into tracking mode just stop and wait for them to relax and pull them back to you ? Again thank you
@markdubose1986

Yes. Just wait and wait and wait until they calm down. Some dogs this can be more than 10 minutes. Then go and then another 10 minutes if they are still in it. It’s like they forget and then we move onto something else. I like to take a few steps back so they know I don’t want that. Dogs like to track and I’ve noticed they love it so much when it’s us doing it together. I want them to know I don’t want that right now. I stop and wait. Let them get all those emotions out. No pressure no treats no praise just let them express the emotions of all that excitement. It will become regular at one point. Some dogs this is where you have a session before the walk at first of a flirt pole to let them get that chase out. Then with time that won’t be needed as they’ll know the difference

I've been doing this with my GR. I let him sniff all the time, and it took 4-6 hrs for the morning walk. We rest under a shade, drink water and watch the world goes by, then continue. I change up the route all the time. It might be same destination but different ways to reach. Sometimes we just have to let dogs be dogs, and they will be happy and whole. My dog never dash out of the house, and sometimes he doesn't even wanna go out for evening walk. Guess he's still tired from his nose work.. lol.

Letting a dog sniff worked wonders for my Rhodesian Ridgeback, just got back from a walk using only the flat collar and long lead, not a single pull. She is just over a year old, still acts like a puppy, but now when I do make her heel, she is perfect, past the runners and bikers.

That makes sense with the barker. You described my dog. What do you suggest to do to retrain that agitated barker when you come up to those dogs and bikes? Would I just stand there and let her bark until she stops, and then start walking again?

Amazing video, will start doing the disengage approach. I would just let our dog pull and walk in this case. How would you handle passing dogs if reactive? Do you stay still and let them react if they were reactive?

Hi Mark! Thanks for the video - I have been working with my two reactive dogs (female at 65 lbs and male at 90 lbs) using your guidance for several weeks now. I walk both of them on Herm Sprengers or plastic Starmarks for safety so they cannot pull me if they start reacting. Would you have any advice on how to handle those big-reactions? I live in MT and we frequently encounter wildlife, off-leash dogs, people hiking or biking, large vehicles, etc. so I feel like we have a reaction at least once a day and I am trying to find a "balance" so that their reactions don't overwhelm me on walks. Love your content!

I would need more information. Lots of times if not used correctly the collars can make the dogs react more because of confusion. Send me an email

That disengage, is that used to control reactivity as well? Really struggling with my dogs reactivity at the moment, only day one but she's hard work when she decides to kick off. Currently I'm waiting for her to 'zero' in and then rather than reward change direction - but I kinda like your method, if it works for that, pull them back until disengage and then let them go forward. Wonder if it'll improve.

Amazing videos Mark I got a question to you and the comment community here of course aswell: My 1 year old Australian sheperd has this thing where he is obsessed with lying down most of the times when we see a dog, even if it is at 50 meters away. Same when a dog comes up quite a few meters behind us. Important to note: he never barks, didn't even show any aggressiveness towards another dog once. So usually I just wait it out and let him observe however I noticed that he reacts and wants to start playing with the other dog, when he arrives at our level. He is extremely playful and loves to play with other dogs, so that is what he is looking for when he lies down (from my perspective) Is there any way to work on this dog neutrality, maybe structured pack walks with other dogs? Did anybody with a herding breed observe this aswell? Thank you everybody!

In my neighbourhood theres a golden retriever that does this. The owner begs and pleads with dog because pooch is too heavy to be moved . Hope you get answer.😊
@markdubose1986
@markdubose1986 Ай бұрын
This is the start of the herding behavior. they get down and stay calm to get the animals to relax so they can get closer. but once the animals get closer that's when the dog jumps up and moves to make the other animal move. this can cause problems for the other dogs because they do not want to be moved around. some dogs are cool with the chase game but not many are, not all like to be pushed around and told where to go. for walks outside i wouldn't personally let my dog this, i would get my dog setup with a game to get all that energy out before the walk at first. i would just keep walking and not stop. say nothing and just walk, if the dog lays down and you cant move them then you're going to have to take some extra steps to break the habit.

@@markdubose1986 thank you so much for the answer man I will start implementing that, until now I was waiting it out and let him stay down but I also considered the fact that other dogs just don’t like that

Great video Mark. The only thing is I find I cannot take more than a couple of dogs out at one time because if they all get stimulated when they see another dog for example, they all start barking, become aggressive and redirect on each other and I have a mess on my hands.

Keep watching, you’re going to see some interesting things come to. I did say at the Beginning of this video in specific that Johnny knows commands I just let him do whatever for demonstration purposes. When they see wildlife I say wait and they back down because they listen before they start to react. I can’t have my dogs looking perfect that’s not going to help anyone see something that’s similar to what there dogs look like. I let them be extra free with no boundaries to give good examples.

@@markdubose1986 Thank you. I guess it depends on what someone wants their dog to be like. Will this way get the dog to being 100% trustworthy in any situation on or off a leash? That may or may not be your intent. I think people jump around watching videos because they are seeking the way that works for a given issue. But they are not considering the big picture of how their dog will be. They in effect are tactical in their approach but not strategic about where they want to go. When the destination is not clear, there could be unwanted outcomes. Some things - like letting animals chase wild animals at the dog park - will under mind trustworthiness in other situations. Most of have pets - not working dogs. I am very mindful of this. I'm curious and watching as I have benefitted from some of your videos. Keep making a difference.

You are correct. Most people are looking for the right here right now approach to most things in life not only dogs. I am one that looks at the end result and starts to work on that in small steps day after day. I do not care how it looks today I care that i am working on my end goal. Delayed gratification is what i wish more people would understand about there dogs. Don’t want it now, want it when it’s ready and you have a solid foundation. Something people don’t consider is to train your dog for what you do. I don’t live in a city so there’s no reason for me to work my dogs downtown everyday. That would be pointless. I live in more open space with lots of open trails and wildlife all over. I take my dogs in that situation everyday because that’s what i do everyday. Most dog training stuff is getting you to train for something other than what you do everyday, you’ll fail because if it’s not what You already do you won’t keep up with it. If you don’t walk trails and think you’re going to replicate what I do but getting to trails everyday is almost impossible you’re going to fail. If you walk your dog around your neighborhood that’s all you need to focus on. Get a solid foundation in that first and then go do more. Do what’s easy for you to do and have access to to keep up being consistent. What I want is what I want. Shouldn’t be what you’re looking for. I want to take my dogs anywhere and don’t worry about a leash. Most places I have to have one on because they’ll try to write me a ticket but I don’t want to worry my dog is going to run off or start barking at other dogs. I want them to hang with me. I have one dog l do that with and that’s my shepherd and now I have the Dalmatian that’s joining that. My other dogs never go out they are at home dogs.
