I am 65 years old. Our two Staffordshire Bull Terriers are 35 and 36kg each and I am not a particularly strong woman. I had a situation where I tethered the dogs when they were about 11 months old and they accidentally ran either side of me and threw me onto my back, fracturing 3 ribs near my spine and giving me a major concussion, and my husband has a cracked tail bone and hip problem now because he had one dog in front of him and one behind and he fell backwards (separate accident). The boys are dangerous to us in their current state and I just want them to be good, and in most ways they are. They know Sit, Come, Walk (even though they pull badly and I can growl and tug their lead when they do the opposite of what I want (ie. try to leave our fenced yard under the fence!) so they CAN be taught..... just being teenagers I think! Thing is, they are now 14 months old and have just been desexed. We couldn't afford to get the boys done before now. Our hope is that they will become easier to train.... any truth in that theory?? They are pulling so hard on their leashes that I cannot walk them together, I thought I should be able to do that, but every 'training' video I am watching has only one dog being trained, so I will need to walk one at a time. I truly hope I can get to the stage where they will walk loose lead with me. I am trying so hard to train them, they do love their routine but they are still so excitable. I LIVE in hope, I love these dogs so much! Thanks for the help you are giving Will, Great work!! XO

What a wonderful dog Tilly seems to be. I hope she finds a loving and patient home. She reminds me a lot of my Schnauzer-Lab mix and trust me - a high-energy, excitable dog is a wonderful addition to your life but she can also be a hyperactive nightmare if not managed appropriately. Always trying to find the balance between having fun and going with her explosive energy but also making sure she is well-mannered and calm when needed. Being more calm and balanced myself has worked wonders on her general energy-level. I also notice with my dog that the more space she gets on lead the more distracted / excited she gets and starts making her own decisions (ie I wanna sniff that / see that / meet that person or dog etc). When she is on a shorter lead she's way more focused on me and pulls less and also stays more calm with distractions happening.

@Will your POV is perfect. I volunteer as a dog walker at a state animal shelter. As a walker, we walk 7-10 dogs (of the ~100) during a shift. We might interact with a dog every 3rd or 4th shift, while other walkers interact between the shift. Can you do a piece on kennel interactions, tips on primary behaviours to build and reduce kennel stress? Thank you.

Will, How do you keep your dog in place? My dog will go to her place but won't stay for more than a minute. I've tried using a timer to build up to 5 minutes but it is not working. I tried treating her half way. I've tried just looking at her to keep her there and then ignoring her but she is not having it. She's a 7 month old Golden retriever. Thanks.

I have a 5 month Staffy x Rotty. She is also very excitable and athletic. Try a Mexican Halti, Leader, or Headcollar whatever you want to call it. It's essentially a dog Halter. Just get a minimalistic one that is like a thin lead, nothing special with all the bells and whistles. Within a matter of days of consistent walks she went from a running, sniffing, pulling mess. Into a well mannered dog who can walk straight with her head up on loose leash without pulling. 5 days in and we are also doing jogs together. Stay confident, calm, and firm with your corrections and directing their head and placement the first couple days. The rest will come with repetition. He will also not necessarily be able to leash chew. Use a treat to place his nose through initially. As we any foreign object he will most likely object to it at first. Within the first or second 30-45 min walk he should be used to it and won't paw at it anymore. The rest should come easy, good luck.

You can get anti chew sprays that you could apply to the leash. We were recommended by a vet nurse to use Deep Heat as a deterrent. It works like a charm but whether that's what it's called in your country you'd have to find out.

My dog loves walks above anything. This means I don't have an adequate reward for training. I don't understand how to train my dog☹️ This didn't really help.... He doesn't understand the turn around technique, because he just thinks we're going this way now, or today's walk was short. Not, I'm pulling my mom's arm off. I have no clue how to undo this. When he gets over excited outside, I hold his face to face me (not in a crazy way, just turn his face towards me). But it looks like I'm picking him up by his head because he strangely lifts his body up with his head like I'm doing it. My dog is so weird and crazy- not aggressive, just excited. Do dogs get ADHD?

@@TARP.. It certainly has been that way. I tried to get lined up with proper trainers when I first got him, but since being in this city (Tucson) people don't freaking call back?!!! I don't get it, but literally had someone call an actual 12 months later🙄 It's so hard to get help out here! So aside from the crappy PetSmart training, I've been on my own. I got my dog because I wanted to do long walks. Unfortunately I got sick, so that really messed things up. My plan was to do a walk-walk, then a training walk. But because I got long COVID I haven't been able to do that. Unless I'm sick/weak, we do at the very least 3-5 miles. When I'm together, 9 miles is our ideal walk. Definitely interested in keeping him active, just wish I had better help in all this... He is not treat motivated at all. He likes treats, but if he were a human friend, give him a choice between all the steak/exotic food/whatever desired dessert for a year vs rock climbing/surfing/skiing, he would choose the latter, even if that meant MRE's for a year. I really don't know how to reward him in training 😔

I had this exact crossbreed and he was an amazing dog. I’ve got a Rottweiler now, in quiet areas he is great on the lead (I’ve done all the engagement stuff and he gets it) but outdoors in public / busier situations it’s hit and miss. Which isn’t ideal for a dog this size especially as I’m only 5ft2. Any tips to deal with this ?

Where do you get your training treats from? Costs a fortune buying small bags.
@CamilleGG451
@CamilleGG451 15 күн бұрын
You can often give smaller pieces than you think you have to. In case that helps :) It's more the association with something positive. (don't suddenly give them way smaller pieces though taper it down a little slowly). Are you using their kibble also? You can do that too.
