What I really like about listening to these is you can see why Ricky likes Karl so much. So many friends you have it’s more or less the same conversations over and over. Anytime you talk to Karl about anything it can literally go anywhere, and usually hilariously funny

I’m with Karl on the brain thing. I’ve had physical disabilities from birth and mental illness like depression for the last 10 years or so. I think of it as there’s me, then my body and then my brain and we don’t always get along. It makes things easier, somehow

The thing with Karl is that he's completely free from looking stupid or intelligent, so often comes out with nebulous thoughts far beyond what Steve and Ricky can. In the brain discussion, like so many others, Karl is actually getting at something which is totally correct - about levels of consciousness - that Ricky just dispels. The more you listen to these old podcasts the more you realise that Karl is way smarter than his words allow sometimes.

The question about the brain is probably not as simple as many people like to present it. There is for example the question of free will. Can a person choose something freely? Can a person be creative freely? If the brain is who you are, and the brain is ruled by the laws of physics, then what goes on in the brain is not of your choise, or choise is an illusion, right? The question of the "duality" is an ancient old philosophical question that nobody really knows the answer to at this time. The only thing available now is to just choose your favorite theory. Everything is physical, ruled by the laws of nature, or there is actually a duality, a dimension of reality that permeates the physical world which is the actual part that you perceive as "you". But if the first theory is your favorite, then did you actually choose that as your favorite? Logically you did not really have a choise in the matter. Responsibility also becomes a very different matter. What matter what you do in your life your thoughts that led to your actions could have been calculated by the laws of nature one thousand years ago if we knew all parameters of everything that moves in the universe. This is called "determinism". Whatever happens is only observed by you. You only observe what you think, and free will is an illusion. When you think over all this then Carl's question is not as ridiculous as it may sound. We have a justice system that is founded on personal responsibility and the belief that you could have chosen differently. If this assumption is true, then there have to be a duality, where the brain is one thing, and your awareness is something else. So is Ricky a victim of the Dunning-Kruger effect when he laughs off Carl? Just asking.... If you can find the answers to these questions with proof, then you will probably be one of the most famous persons in history. Good luck, but for most people the best advice I can give is to accept that parts of life is quite mysterious, and maybe our "brain" or "awareness" are not really developed far enough to give the final answers to these things.

@arifeannor9573
@arifeannor9573 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are not always right when they dismiss Karl. The moon is tidal locked to the earth so even though it does revolve around the earth and rotates on its axis, it rotates at the same rate it takes to revolve around the earth. I had a science teacher in high school who was a pretty cute good looking teacher but she told the class the moon didn't rotate at all but when she walked around the room, I explained to her that it did. She was a little embarrassed about it but at the same time, I think it is a natural mistake for people to make. Tons of those types of missteps in logic people take when you take one fact and expand upon based on that alone without full thinking it through. We always see the same face of the moon therefore it doesn't rotate, when they totally discount the revolution of it that if it truly didn't rotate, one side of the planet would see side A, and the other side would see side B. Before humans could travel, I'm sure most people thought that because how would you know what the moon looks like half way across the world.

These guys don't know what they don't know. For that reason they don't realize a lot of what Karl talks about and thinks about are actually valid points. Neuroscientists Robert Sapolsky and Sam Harris talk about this all the time. Sure Karl's description of it isn't the most accurate but they are actually talking about the same concepts. Most of the decisions we make aren't really controlled by our conscious self. These two constantly shake their head at Karl like he's an idiot when in reality he's thought about the topic much deeper than these two. It's actually a little infuriating that they consider Karl an idiot because of their own ignorance.
@phueal
@phueal 2 жыл бұрын
There’s something in that, but it’s not helped by the fact that Karl uses the incorrect words to express his thoughts. Presumably Karl is talking about whether his subconscious is sometimes in control of his conscious self, or whether his consciousness controls his subconscious. But he expressed it as whether “he controls his brain”: they’re perfectly right when they say that “he” and “his brain” are both the same, because both his consciousness and his subconscious are physically within the biological organ “the brain”. In a way both sides are correct, but while Ricky and Steve are literally correct, Karl is only correct if you generously amend what he actually says to mean what he probably would have meant if he had a better vocabulary.

Ricky is wrong about the brain. Karl is simply thinking of something not his brain, he is thinking of conscious and unconscious thought. When Karl set down to write his list, he was consciously thinking of items he needed. When the 'thought' of onion came to him later, it was an unconscious thought.

Not trying to offend anyone with dogs, this is not all dog owners, but I have always said dogs are appealing to idiots for a reason. They are attractive to the sort of people who lack the intelligence or insight to influence or intellectually spar or converse with another human, so they need an animal which will unconditionally 'listen' even though the dog obviously does not understanding a single sound, and can only understand anything we do through Pavlovian type conditioning, and will remain loyal unconditionally. These individuals are just smart enough to know they will always 'have' a dog. It is for this reason some dog owners I know strike me as weird/very insular and self contained people, who never seem to have much of an idea of the outside world. These are my own personal experiences with dog owners around here, at least.
@Delicious_J

I should probably add a similar phenomenon occurs with cat owners too, the obessive types who are completely fucking obssessed with their cat or cats, never allow them outside (a ridiculous trend which has become more popular recently in the United States due to some stupid article Peta, only the most trustworthy of sources, wrote about how cats should only ever be kept indoors, which is rich coming from them) and treat them as a baby or child because they are lonely, and do not know how to socialise.
@SaintPhoenixx
@SaintPhoenixx 2 жыл бұрын
@@Delicious_J I don't agree with keeping cats indoors 24/7, I've owned cats and they happily spent most of their lives outside, only coming indoors for food, attention and sleep, but I think some people do keep them indoors for good and bad reasons. Some people live in a dog-heavy neighbourhood and it's probably safest for the cat to live indoors instead of being chased by rabid, free-roaming pitbulls 24/7. If you have the room for it and it's potentially unsafe outside for a cat, I understand keeping them inside. As long as they get exercise, enrichment, somewhere to sleep and food, I don't see an issue with it. Those are rare cases obviously, cats are perfectly well adapted to the outside world, as long as you don't live next to a dangerous, openly roaming dog.

It's the transition between subconscious thought and conscious thought. Depending on how much attention you are paying it can feel like inspiration from an outside source, but it's just a different part of your mind delivering information to your up front conscious mind. This happens all the time and most people miss it or prompt it consciously. Example: If you ever ask yourself when writing a list if that is everything (either aloud or not), you are prompting your unconscious mind to double check your recent memories. It's something you can train with memorization and recall exercises.
