In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Robin Horsfall.
Walking into the Army careers office aged just 14, Robin joined the Parachute Regiment, and enjoyed his position into the regimental shooting team before joining 2 Para in Northern Ireland. Robin undertook the arduous SAS Selection course in 1979, and joined B Squadron 22 SAS in in time to be a part of the Iranian Embassy Siege in 1980. Sent on a one-way mission to Argentina during the Falklands war, which was luckily averted at the 11th hour, Robin then left the regiment and became bodyguard to Dodi & Mohammed Al-Fayed. After leaving 'The Circuit' Robin launched Karate schools, and attended university to progress his creative writing skills, which he has put to good use with his series of books. Robin's LinkedIn updates on the Ukraine Invasion have risen to legendary status, attracting over 1 Million readers per week at its height.

Robin is a very astute guy,with a Wealth of experience! But when he mentioned about MAGA and the Congress that's way to simplistic..The U.S is like 50 different Companies under one umbrella& we should never lose sight of the fact that it's the U,S Taxpayer& many loans that fund the Military! Now the U.S likes it's victories and Hero's but everything has to happen fast or they soon lose interest! And then of course u have NATO where the U.S ponies up the most cash ( and then often receives plenty of criticism) So as I said it's very complicated issue,about U.S Aid& Military Assistance!

Another first class interview, Phil. In a world where we draw our opinions from newspapers and TV reporting, the honesty of your interviewees first hand experiences proves that we should believe very little of what the popular media feed us.

Robin is a really clever and articulate guy. I remember him talking about the John Charles Menendez incident and he broke it all down whilst explaining that it couldn't have been an SF guy. The reason why SF train so hard and have elite levels of fitness is so they can concentrate and make split second decisions when the heartbeat reaches 180 bpm etc. Obviously Police units don't train that hard.

Something I recall from Robin’s autobiography, as he and Phil talked about bullying. When Robin first arrived at 2 Para, following P Coy, there was a Cpl who, when a person was sleeping, would creep, drunk, into the bloke’s room and beat him up! That’s the worst type of bully and I wish Robin had mentioned the bastard.
@paralogregt
@paralogregt 6 ай бұрын
That happened right across the Para Brigade. Guys coming pissed up looking for someone to bully usually folks how had yet to do P Coy. You learn to sleep with one eye open until you have passed P coy and got your wings. I was at Hereford when he was there, i was one of the many attached troops who keep them going. I even supported B Sqn on a couple of exercises which was my first eye opener to the Regt.

I commented on this yesterday but for some strange reason it's disappeared 🤔. As I said it's always happened, you always get the big brave men coming in and picking on the smaller and weaker blokes. It happened a lot in 3Para during the 90's. All the tough men should be named and shamed as they've probably not changed, more than likely they're sat in a prison cell. 👍

Good interview again - well done Phil for letting the interviewee do most of the talking. Robin is pretty well spot on in re Ukraine, but another BIG factor in the Russian decision is the hydrocarbon reserves of Eastern Ukraine and the Black Sea, enough to supply all of Europe for decades.

I listened to each minute and was inspired by his tone. There's a humility there somewhere yet a strong will to fight still. Hats off to his long marriage and his writing. I to write every day and am learning more - I get it! I'll certainly read one of his books before long. I have a few from the regiment here - all signed. I feel the window he presents though will be slightly different. A decent chap. Mark

I don't agree with the democracy point. Zelensky has already passed multiple anti-democratic laws, and the bully analogy is far too simplistic.

The war is real, but the causes have virtually nothing to do with anything Robin says. The war is yet another excuse to print money and inject liquidity into a desperate economic system. I'm afraid Zelensky is no great man of history, rather a useful protagonist for a media narrative that was suspiciously ready-made

It was the Fleet Air Arm that was dominating the air, not the RAF. Their contribution, was the Vulcan raid. They might have had the odd pilot with a Naval Air Squadron as well, though.
