Simplistic summary of a very complex issue. Every culture has different social norms and they cant be changed because a few people think they are outdated. Some people will always violate social norms but in doing so they put themselves in a particular position in that society. You cant have society without having norms. They form our traditions, identity and history.

I stopped the video at 30seconds because, "social norm" or "normal" are NOT shortcut. What happened is we tried everything else, it failed, and we are left with what didn't and works. That's the definition of a norm. That's why we don't smoke in close spaces, we don't fart in elevators, we don't cut in lines, etc... I mean we CAN do this thing, but they are anti-social and there are repercutions if we do so. For instance we are still in the infancy of dealing with smartphones, people still don't turn off ringtones in theaters, people still do conference calls in public transports, people still don't use headphones to listen to their music in public spaces, etc... All this is still trial-and-error but give it a few more years and "social norms" will also arise there.

Social constructs and norms are an essential a creation for social "cohesion". A construct where all can play on the same page using the same rules of engagement. When this is discarded and everyone follows there own individual rules we have chaos where no one knows the correct rule to the game. Typically conflict will ensue and the group no long acts as a group. > It is one of the unfortunate paradoxes in the concept of multiculturalism. One set of social norms will often be very incompatible with another set of social norms. Either we exist as a singular global group under the same set of rules (unlikely) or we exist as smaller groups each with a set of norms more appropriate to the needs and conditions of that individual group (always some friction between groups).

The environment. At a point in time, different groups of organisms were in specific environments that forced them to adjust to it or die. Today, the environment isn't as scary as it was before, so we think. We get up, go to work, come home, open our refrigerators, watch KZbin, go to sleep. We have a lot of time on our hands. We reflect and philosophize. We don't spend as much time with our children as our ancestor did; for them it was 24hrs probably, for us it maybe 6hrs, if everyone isn't on their smart phones. Dating apps, money, debates, politics, religion, etc. The human body currently exists in an environment it doesn't belong in. The mind however, is having a blast.

It could be uncomfortable but it could lead to more people coming to terms with one another. Not to mention potentially improving our communities, our relationships, and ourselves. Sometimes, the US has practices and beliefs that I think are better than those from other countries. And there are some countries that have practices that are superior to our country.

Earlier today I watched a video about using infantry formations in video games. (Just because) According to it, some people will use a known formation, without understanding the principles underlying why and when you would use one. They tend to see the form, but don't understand the substance, which makes their use of those formations in the video game completely ineffective. For instance, one of the reasons to use a particular formation (The "wedge", I believe) is so each member of a team can cover a designated area, such as holding the rear, so as to avoid being taken by surprise. If all members of the team are facing the same direction, then nobody is checking the rear. This defeats the point, because now they can be taken by surprise, and they aren't moving as efficiently as if they had naturally run in a line, one after another. Similarly, when it comes to social norms, the substance of Why the social norm exists, matters. If you adhere only to the form of the social norm, without truly understanding the principles for why it exists, you'd be better off not following it at all. A few come to mind, which I won't mention, out of fear of contention.

I agree with the Chesterton guy that reasons for things should be examined. I do this a lot with religious belief (I believe these are human constructs and not divine). For example, perhaps the story of Noah’s ark arose because ancient people would have found fossils of fish at the tops of mountains, and without the concept of plate tectonics they would have assumed the seas must have been that high, which raises the question of 1. Why? (god punished people for doing bad) and 2. How did any living thing survive…a big boat. Its logical. Same with the story where god took away snakes legs and made them crawl on their bellies…ancient people would have known that snakes have vestigial legs and must have thought, what’s up with that? What about some religions not eating pork. Well, pigs destroy delicate ecosystems, such as desert in the Middle East. They also carry parasites that are a health hazard. What about rules about sex…venereal disease and sex addiction. There are likely reasons for everything.

In my eyes "Social Norms" are like a fire 🔥. You can use social norms to improve morals, manners and discipline. Great traits for any human being, just like how fire was used for warmth, cooking food, and as a weapon to create tools for hunting. But social norms when used wrong can lead to disasters.I will give you 2 examples. Slavery was a social norm in the past, so many innocent people perished purely because of skin colour. Another was WW2, in Germany, the ariyan race was seen as pure and any other race must be killed. This being normalized in Germany, led to the killings of thousands of people without a hint of remorse.

So if we look at the world generally speaking, most social norms have been determined by white males, with even the traditional aka historical social norms of non white cultures being affected by colonialism and capitalisms mission to turn everything into a source of profit, like cultural art and food. Look at what they did to native Americans, forced to cut their hair, abandon their languages, introduced alcohol, were appalled natives didn't beat their children. If they do or not good to a society beside avoiding anarchy, this is secondary effect, generally speaking those based on ten commandments do generally (!) good to a society. The problem with the correctness of man made rules lies in the confusion between the necessity of respecting the rules and the necessity of existing of those rules. The first one is an impostor!

To my eyes norms were established based a mix of "what works" and what we think about the other sex. Holding a door to help someone who is crippled or has their hands full is just a good thing to do. Hopefully it also encourages others to help if only so they receive aid in turn. Holding a door because a person is a woman is stupid. I would also argue that seeking advice from so-called "influencers" is stupid. I give you the hordes of male and female dating advisers. As I've said far too often over the years I remember the advertisements in the 90's where they were talking about being yourself. Don't step into somebody else's shoes. Now they want everyone to take on this label of right/left/black/white/trans etc. I am not some damned descriptor. I am me. Weird example to choose. Is it entirely rhetorical? Because, to me, the obvious answer is people should open doors for people. Especially if a person is carrying something. That's just being generally kind and considerate. I feel like I'm being baited by this example though... If I'm being super critical of your specific example, then a very manly man who does manly things should probably not open a door for a hapless, helpless, and distressed woman who is both scared, confused, and panicked over the presence of a door. It serves only to infantalize the woman and perpetuate outdated ideas about gender roles, and, most likely is a sort of micro-aggression towards the woman to remember just how little personal agency she has and how entirely dependent and submissive to a man she should be. It's important to know also that the history of etiquette is largely a collection of purposely obtuse and difficult behavioral codes designed specifically to reinforce and signal social and economic hierarchies. So like... I'm inclined to think most "social norms" are actually bullshit, generally, but if you enjoy engaging with them, then that's fine too. I do think that examining traditions critically is a good idea generally. That all being said, I'll still open the door for my girlfriend when it's practical.

If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. We put the world behind us and enter the kingdom within through forgiveness.

Religion is often just another social norm. If you had been born and raised somewhere else or in a different time you would likely believe in whatever myths were the social norms there and then. And, since we know Adam and Eve were not real people, they could never have eaten from a magic tree where understanding morality (knowledge of good and evil) was punishable by making you and all your descendants be innately evil. That means there never was any original sin, and so there is no need for a sacrifice to redeme us. Besides, Ahura Mazda is the One True God, according to the Zoroastrian scriptures, so why should anyone believe in one set of scriptures over another? So... _"What criteria did you use, and applied universally and equitably to all past and present religions and their gods, that conclusively proves the truth of your religion and disproves all others?"_ If you can't answer that question then there is no justification for claiming one particular social norm religion is true. People have as much reason for not believing in your myth as you have for not believing in theirs.
