I see Tammi's ( RIP, Goddess) version opening a movie with Spike Lee directing. I want to sit with a tall glass of wine and play her entire album and especially this song. Her version is so beautifully upscale and sounds like art. It's just Divine, as She was and a bit haunting because she literally floats over the song. She might have recorded the song when she wasn't feeling the greatest but her vocals are Truly Heavenly and Genius as she was. After hearing her sing You truly wanted to know everything about her. She was in her earlier 20's and possessed this "It Factor". Now Stevie's version is Epic but strictly for every World Disco until "The End Of Time". Stevie knows how to attack Your soul and then leaves You with nothing but to dance. Stevie's catalog contains some of "The Sexiest Dance Ballads Ever!!!"....It's an Even Tie for Me.

I think it's ridiculous, okay, not a good idea to make this comparison. Both are awesome and give their own rendition based on the time the recording was done. Tammy's version is more like the early Supremes. That's how it was in the '60's. I love them both, actually! Plus, we're talking Stevie and Tammi! However, I am glad to hear them both! I used to work at Motown and Jobete. I will always LOVE the artists I was blessed to meet. No comparisons, just great music! Thanks...

Wow I've never heard Tammi's version of this song and I love it however I think of that this is sort of an unfair and simplistic comparison,as both of them stand strong on their own. To me,what's most interesting,is to hear the evolution of this song over a thirteen year period.. Thanks for the informative post!

Technically it was 14. Tammi recorded it in early 1966.

Stevie wrote the song for her in 1966 at the age of 16. What a Genius!

I Love both song's. Stevie sounds Wonderful it has that 80s kick to it. Love it. Love him as a songwriter and singer. Tammi My Girl, her version is Amazingly Beautiful and Haunting. It has that signature Motown 60s sound. Imagine if Tammi Terrell was alive and she recorded songs in the 80s. I can imagine her doing The Mary Jane Girls songs, like All Night Long, Candy Man, Boys. She would have killed it❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

2 different eras.. can't make a choice bc the sounds are to different. I'm glad you posted this bcuz this is news to me. I never knew that was a remake or Tammi did it first. Motown is known for recycling their music and did a great job at it!!

Wow! First of all, I didn't know Tammi's version even existed. I grew up on Stevie's version so it's a no brainer but I certainly respect Tammi's version, very soulful!
