Who Did It Better? - The Mixtures vs Mungo Jerry - The Pushbike Song

In this video we're comparing The Mixtures and Mungo Jerry, and their renditions of The Pushbike Song. We really enjoyed comparing In The Summertime by them a little while back, and we got a large number of requests to try this song out. One of our viewers even made a video with both songs together, just to make it easier for us. So, how could we say no? We're really excited to check this track out. I have fond memories of this song by The Mixtures, but I like the video from the Mungo Jerry version (which I hadn't seen before), I once walked into a metal pole looking at an attractive girl so, these things happen, Cynthia is right. It's a win for The Mixtures for me, but both bands have a similar style so it makes sense that they would cover each other's material.

I used to see The Mixtures perform on television shows like The Go!! Show and Kommotion in the mid 60's. But it was this number and their cover of ''In The Summertime'' that elevated them into the mainstream. ''Captain Zero'' was another hit they had in Australia, and was notable for featuring Brian Eno on Synthesiser. You might like to take note of that if you ever do decide to react to that song.

With the Mungo Jerry version, the girl... I mean I've heard of looking up old friends, but that was ridiculous!! Again, too close to call, both entertaining. It's just a novelty song. A butt, I mean a bit of fun!

They sound the same to me but as an Aussie I can pick the pommy accent in the Mungo Jerry version. I remember both bands with hits on the radio when I was at achool in my early teens but I seem to associate The Mixtures more with the Push Bike Song and Mungo Jerry with In The Summertime but then thats more than 50 years ago so I'm probably lucky that I can remember anything at all.

The Mixtures for me. The film-clip was shot in Melbourne, and features a scene of a street parade that Gillian and I attended when we were small. There's a second that captures two little girls watching by the footpath. Gillian played that Mixtures record about 10 times a day, and it would drive everybody mad. Cheers, Hayley

The Mixtures was the original, Mungo Jerry was a cover. Probably a more catchy song than "In the Summertime", which of course the Mixtures covered Mungo Jerry! Paul Hogan was well known for his comedy sketches before playing with crocodiles and big knives! 😅

I liked the Mixtures version because it shows Melbourne from 1970. They show a lot of old cars including HT Holden Taxis. I still have my 69 Holden classic car. Chris, you should get Cynthia to put some short cut Shorts on for you if you have a yearning to do you know what. Ha, ha, ha.🍑🤠

The Mixtures hit pay dirt in the UK because ''Pushbike Song'' topped the charts here. They did a bit of Top Of The Pops with other hits like ''Captain Zero'' too. I didn't know Mungo Jerry recorded ''Pushbike Song'' but from what I hear, it sounds like a knock-off on those shonky Top Of The Pops Various Arist records, if anybody remembers those. The Mixtures are the winners here.

@@DogInSpace 🤔😆 You had me there. We're barely visible on the screen! That's me and my sister when we were tiny. Our parents have reminded us over the years that we saw The Mixtures and model Monica Hughes riding by on their bikes as we picnicked at the Edward VII Monument on St Kilda Road. I can't remember the name of that particular parade on Collins Street, but we were there to see that too.

Those were two little boys running on the grass. I watched it closely because I wasn't recognising the figures as you two. I can't vote because I hated this song. Good to see old Melbourne in both those clips though. The lady in the Mungo version is Karen Pin, who was a regular on the Paul Hogan Shoe, a 1976 Miss World Pageant runner up and a frequent visitor to my teenage fantasies.

i do not know the song as a serious song.. Only knew it from the Paul Hogan Show as a little kid. Benny Hill show was a bit similar. Used to watch Paul Hogan Show, Dave Allen Show and The Two Ronnies as a little kid, Fun comedies to watch aa a little kid. Cannot think of one American comedy I watched as a kid. They were just not very funny people.
