Owner or and unkilled mechanics have done there job perfect as expected. If you are a owner of an expensive car with special technology... ... than you have to pay for a equal mechanic (trained special for these model and every year some days away for training school of BMW america). A lot of mechanics are unable to say: my knowledge is to ......... l for these computer based engine designe. A lot of owners are unable to understand that european cars are very expensive in europe and in the US. e.g. BMW (or Mercedes-Benz or Audi) can not a normal worker afford to service (or buy it new with zero miles). These brands are for better payed owners and these owners drive only in BMW Service Center (never ever to a cheap garage). I dont wish that these mechanics fly in a plane with service by equal mechanics.

For less than a G, I think you got a great "diamond in the rough." The electronics modules aren't too horrid to do with junkyard replacements and a laptop with some software "freely" available on the internet. This car looks like it was REALLY spec'ed out by whoever purchased it. Noticing the night vision cam; those aren't very common. As someone who's done the CCC ---> CIC conversion, it's nice to have it already. Parts are hard to find, and swapping the console controller is a pain. The CIC can be even further modernized with android auto/apple carplay boxes. 2-300 from Chinese retailers like Kremersino, and not too hard to put in. They just use the CAN bus inputs from the controller and sit between the head unit and display to give you a full phone experience without interfering with or replacing any factory hardware.
@vadimr48662 жыл бұрын
I've done like CCC to CIC in E61 including combox. It's not hard and I think I still have another CIC in the basement. Anyone wants it?
@nerdboy4232 жыл бұрын
@vadimr4866 True for most of the swap. The faceplate is the hard to find part, and the hard work is if you want the newer idrive controller. Either replace the entire center console, or mill out the old one and make a custom mount/bezel.
@fredmalito9869 Жыл бұрын
The problem with that idea is that when the radio fails then it can take down the entire CAN network and prevent the car from starting or running.

You said that the car had sat for awhile, hence the corrosion on visible parts of engine. That corrosion could go a lot deeper and involve a number of things, most notably electrical connections. I was a radar maintenance type in the service and when we got into the digital age and working with low voltages (.001 > 28VDC) a common fix for a problem was to simply pop a circuit card loose and reseat it in it's connector. Moving the coil packs around accomplished that and now the full voltage is flowing to all necessary places. I agree with your question "who the hell worked on that car" all I know is I wouldn't, I diddled a little with my `78` Subaru, setting valves, replacing water pump, but I wouldn't even think of tinkering with my `22` Roo with twin cams and all the electronics.

My nephew obtained a 2000 540i sport wagon back in 2010ish from his father. He asked me to check it out. I was impressed, both for good and bad reasons. His father was very particular about getting maintenance done on time so it wasn't an abused car at all. After checking it out I told him... "Drive this for 6 months and sell it!" Well, he didn't sell it after 6 months and all sorts of things started happening, one of which were the air bags failing. The plastic parts in the cooling system started failing, the ignition coils started to fail ($90/each x 8 for full replacement), the upper and lower radiator hoses failed, the power steering pump failed, something in the brakes failed (I didn't repair that one but it was VERY expensive at the BMW dealer. More than the kid could really afford).... all after about 8 months of daily driving...He finally sold it as his life was changing. BMWs are either heaven or hell: the masochism to joy ratio determines which it is.

Hey Eric, I'm sure someone already mentioned it, however, if you connect a 'fish tape' or similar string or rope to the old unit before removing the crossover lines, it will give you something to pull with using a tie strap to keep the lines together. Just saves a little time and headache :). Also leaving the right side sender loose in the tank will give a few inches to work with connecting the lines on the left side. But congrats on the tenacity and perseverance to see this through 👋👏😀

First off, congrats on the great deal at the auction for a solid green wagon. I also got mine at auction but just the sedan e60. I've replaced the low pressure fuel pump a few times so the best way to do it is tying nylon or some sort of rope to the fuel lines in the driver side fuel filter side, disconnecting and pulling from the passenger side. On reinstall tie the new lines to the rope now on the passenger side then pull them over to driver side. Also, the easiest way to convert to rwd is that x-delete app but understand the weight reduction. Let us know where and when you're selling that blue e61. Shoot, might do what you did and just look for a mechanically totalled e61 in either blue or green. Manual woild be nice but too rare. Might have to manual swap and follow your lead.

I've always been a Toyota guy, was even a Toyota tech for 10 years. I was very worried when my mom decided to buy an e60 as I've worked on all sorts of cars at the dealer and in my experience, German cars were the worst. That was by far the worst car my family has ever owned and we've been through dozens of cars. 3 sets of injectors, cats, 2 turbos, every single hose had to be replaced after leaving her stranded at least 3 times. Water pump also left her stranded. My daily is an 06 highlander with 400k and has never left me stranded once, we've had it since new. My 93 supra has 220k on it and has also never let me down. Pretty much none of my Toyotas ever let me down. We never took the e60 on long trips as it was too risky, always something with that car. It's too bad because when it ran it was a blast to drive....when it ran...

Our current is a 2010 525d with full M Package (Suspension, Aero and Interior) and best of all is a manual 6 Speed. 100% agreed, you should not own one if you are not willing and capable of wrenching on them - dealer prices will drive you bankrupt. I find I'm starting to like BMWs better now that the majority of jerks that used to drive them have moved on to Teslas.

@@lzaffuto - Yes ! I have had several and they are really great drivers cars...Long trips? A snap! You are not even tired... But they do require a lot of preventive maintenance and if you do not do it when they say, they might come back to bite you... Love all Bimmers!!! :)

just a tip for the next tank, when i need to pull all those feed lines from one side of the tank to the other, I normally put a wire or a small metal rod in the space that the lines need to come through, tape the lines on the wire once it comes through the other side and pull them all at once. learned that trick with an electrician friend of mine and use it in all kinds of tasks. when it's hard to push, use something smaller to help pull it from the other side. it works 99% of the time.

I lived in Germany for 8 years and while there I owned a 525 turbo diesel wagon. That was one of my favorite cars I’ve owned. I wish I still had it but it was a German spec car so shipping it back to the US was not going to happen.

Engine tear-down suggestion: Jaguar/Land Rover "V6" that is used in the Jag XF. It is basically the exact same block as the V8 but they chose to not bore out the last 2 cylinders, so you have a V6 ENGINE that is the same physical size (and even HEAVIER IIRC) as the V8. I couldn't believe I saw what I was seeing when I saw this thing. I think it would be great to see what happens when you let accountants make decisions for engineers!

So the accountants had holes in their arguments...oh wait...

You should use a "fish wire" or "fish tape" to pull it through and hold it so it does not get tugged back when you install the lines. Like an electrician would use to pull wires in a wall. The gas and sticking my arms in it would scare me , if it goes up in flame, so do you!

I was thinking about the fish wire idea while watching as well. I’ll bet that’s what they do at the dealerships; tie a wire to the one coming out, and then tie on the new one to pull back through.

I bought a 2009 535i at auction 3 years ago. nice to see someone else going through the same. Mine had a host of problems from the start but mostly neglect(not shoddy repairs). Needed valve cover gasket, HPFP, EKPM, and many coolant leaks fixed just to name a few. Converted mine to manual but it was already RWD(Sedan). Looking forward to watching the build of this one.

BMW wagons from the Bangle era look better than the sedans and coupes. There is no Bangle Butt and less of his "flame side" non-sense.

Love this generation of BMWs. I’m a BMW guy from the Rolla area with my n54 e90 and e92. But you are correct; they have a big aversion to people using cheap parts to fix them, like they should know better.

Ohh & cool tool pulling the, “ sending units/ floats” outta the back seat areas...! A few years ago, I bought a 2000 Volvo V70 AWD wagon...despite a Christmas tree's worth of lights in the dash. It ran, rode and handles beautifully. It was rust free. That Volvo is why I have vowed to never buy another used, fancy, European car ever again. Maybe a standard, diesel, VWI...but probably not. I like working on vehicles. I'm even pretty good at it...but every single thing I had to work on, was the biggest pain in the ass of any vehicle I have ever owned. Plugs were easy...that was it. If I don't count my time (cuz you just can't and retain your sanity) after all of the work I put in, I made enough to buy a few lattes when I sold it and the young lady who bought it, has a nice, reliable car. Probably.

I must admit to getting a lot of satisfaction in fixing things, usually more along the lines of toasters and lamps than BMWs (though I do own one which has never given me any trouble, yet). I really feel you are doing a good deed to rescue a car like this, that has been abused. You started out with junk, and wound up with something useful, decent and maybe even desirable. Good job!

The first car I ever bought was an '88 RX7 Turbo in 2006 and the first time I filled the fuel tank i dropped a few litres of gas on the ground at the fuel pump. I discovered that while a previous owner did upgrade the fuel pump, they didn't bother to tighten down the cover where it mounted to the top of the fuel tank. It was one of many things that I discovered about that car over several years.
