J.Wood. Don't know if you, or anyone else, recalls the slim large nosed comedy actor, Stan Ross, with the slicked down hairstyle that had a lock shaped into a pointed strand that went from forehead down his nose. He was on the old Jackie Gleason Comedy Show where he would appear behind Gleason and when asked by Gleason, "What're you doing here?" Would make a dour face and reply in a homosexual-like high pitched voice as he pointed at Gleason, "I'm with you." Sometimes Gleason would reply, "Oh no you're not!" KZbin has a short vignette of the routine.☺

Please don't say people died 'fighting' cancer-it suggests they didn't fight hard enough. The reality is, remissions can be cruel, offering false hope. A very few spontaneously recover. Some learn it's gone. Some think they're clear, but see it return. It kills around 50% of us. We endure it; we take any treatment offered; we hope against hope. And we might get lucky. Who, though, has 'fought' their way back to health? I've seen a _lot_ of cancer, and fighting it is not what's going on.
@cfrandre8319 Жыл бұрын
Well said. Thank you.
@jameswright... Жыл бұрын
Are you saying a soldier dying on a battle field fighting the his enemy didn't give enough of a fight? They lost their lifes and could be on the winning side, giving all the fight he had could of been the turning point. Just because you die fighting it doesn't mean you didn't give enough. You have to fight, it is a fight, doctors will say we will fight this. Some people give up die earlier, it is a fight for survival with everything you have regardless of the outcome. I've been around cancer my whole life.
@kh23797 Жыл бұрын
@@jameswright... Thing is, James, we saw these cancer victims died, notwithstanding that we're told they were all 'fighting' their cancers. They may have been very brave, optimistic and determined, but that isn't 'fighting', though I'd agree throwing in the towel might hasten one's end. And I don't deny the power of the placebo effect-but I know what I have witnessed many times. Despite our best caring efforts, cancer took my parents, my parents-in-law, a niece (recently) and many other friends, family and colleagues over my 70-odd years. They were often amazingly brave, philosophical even, but obviously also very scared, and even angry. Yet they couldn't 'fight'-because they were already terribly ill and weak, and all died despite their obvious desire not to! Soldiers are in the main fit young people, and not ordered into battle in dreadful health-the metaphor is a _non sequitur_ really. You endure cancer _and might even survive it,_ but you can't mentally arm yourself to beat it, nor does a strong will and determination (however admirable) or even religious faith, halt the progress of an aggressive carcinoma. Any decent doctor must encourage the patient to remain optimistic-giving up all hope is no way to face the future, _whatever_ it is. But doctors and nurses are taught the _science_ of medicine, and rely on effective treatments, eschewing the rest.
@jameswright... Жыл бұрын
@@kh23797 My old dear was a cancer specialist for pretty much my entire life, I'm named after my uncle who died from cancer and I've lost many if loved ones. It is a fight for your life, losing the fight doesn't mean you didn't give everything. I'm a late middle age man and my wife works at a cancer hospice, same one my mum took us to when little to teach us. Even the specialist call it a fight, sometimes we win sometimes we lose. It's not a fist fight is it, is mental state and war with meds, a arms race you could lose but have to fight, that's what your body naturally does against any illness with its antibodies etc. Chemical warfare almost, a battle for survival a fight for life.
@kh23797 Жыл бұрын
@@jameswright... I respect your POV, James, as we all have our own take on the world, but I am not alone in finding this knee-jerk cliché an uncomfortable one. I could provide sources, but you can find them sprinkled over the web pretty easily. In the cases cited in the clip, we don't know how the individuals received the news-with calm acceptance, even refusing treatment (like me dear ma-in-law)?... or maybe wanting to be put on a drug trial, or to use alternative medicine, in a desperate attempt to be cured?... or somewhere in the middle? How scared the individual is of dying, or how much they love life, is obviously germane. The use of this 'one-size-fits-all' epithet is an overused, journalistic attempt to sweeten the bitter pill of just stating so-and-so died of The Big C. I won't go on as this is just a comment column, so I'll be leaving it there if you don't mind. We'll have to agree to disagree, but I sincerely wish you good health and a long life.

Billy was a trendsetter. Before him, wrestlers were both out of shape & pretty much untalented. Although McMahon didn't let him be a superstar for as long as he should have been, many others, including Flair & Hogan took his image into making wrestlers look more realistic than Happy Humphrey, Haystacks Calhoun & Andre The Giant ever could. Very sad to hear of his passing. Aside from The Freebirds, he was my childhood favorite.
