My 1st RC was a Grasshopper in the late 80's, I still have old RC magazines from the day. Having a family and other interests I didn't have the money for RC, and it wasn't until Covid that I decided to get back into the hobby, and did I. I was amazed at just how much the market had grown since the last time I had been interested, and I feel like I got back in at a really lucky point as I can feel the market transition from where it was just 3-4 years ago with another explosion of options. From Zero to Fourteen RC's in that short span, some trials and tribulations, but mostly fun and enjoyment, and time well spent. I may not be a master crawler, or have the best scale details, but when I look around at my motley crew I am proud of my accomplishments, and happy that the Hobby is still expanding.

So many of us came back to the hobby during COVID. I pulled my E-Maxx out of a storage bin in the garage, built it up, and now I've gone RC bonkers.

In one way the complete saturation of advertising in social media is good because our hobby needs the make money to be viable and survive. Beyond that every single thing in our lives seems to be designed to bleed us dry and that part of it gets so old. Kind of unrelated but also not

RC is not going anywhere anytime soon. Every single company could stop advertising and the industry would be just fine. Most of the larger manufacturers are making insane amounts of profit. The cost to produce that sprint car is about $18 in China if not considerably less. It is marked up at least 6x production cost. their only objective is to keep their share holders happy. They could give a shit less about the actual health of the hobby itself.

Sponsorship it great. It gets the product names out there and adds some competition amongst the viewers. Plus the sponsee has to sell their talent Sponsorship being the payoff. Nascar slogan of many years ago was" race on Sunday sell on Monday". I think that still stands. I watch your channel regularly to see whats new and I wonder how many company's have sold product due to your show. Crawling is my go to. It clears my crazy mind. 🙃

My first RC was 1972, a pulse proportional radio. Then there were very few choices and even fewer at less than a kings ransom price. Today the choices are vast as is the price range, so for me the more manufactures the better.

You can never have too much rc parts. I love that this hobby has exploded. The more parts, the more prices are driven down. You no longer have one person/ brand having a monopoly on a certain market and raising prices through the roof. You still have it in some areas, but there are now cheaper options for same or sometimes better quality! Fun times for the hobby!

I remember looking at these old magazines i remember some of your first builds back then people would buy a wheelyking just for the axles then axial came out with the ax10 and then the wraith and everything snowballed from there I started rc in 2004 as well with a nitro basher then a wheelyking crawler that I built im not sure what I got after that was a long time ago But I remember being into crawlers for many years and you are one person that gave me the inspiration to keep building It has been some years since I really built anything cool but I am wanting to build a few new 1/10 crawlers and desert racers Just waiting for parts and materials seems to take the longest in a build process Great work Josh i always enjoy watching!!

Just to throw some more info out there on that Traxxas Sprint car. Local Traxxas shops have told me the contract with Snap-On states they cant make that car for production for 3 years. Bummer. That being said, I have one and its AWESOME!!! Best part is I broke a part on it last night filming a speed run and I called up Traxxas and they said just send them pictures of the broken part and they will send me a new one FOR FREE! He did tell me they are SUPER limited though so after they run out of spares, there will not be any more. He couldnt verify IF they will even make the car for the general public. Hope this helps!

I love racing as that was where I started in the hobby and continue to enjoy it. I have found most sponsorships give the drivers a discount on kits and parts and they sometimes can access new cars a little earlier. I only do it for fun as I see careers in Rc as very limited to the top pro drivers which seems like fewer than 50 people in the country. We are fortunate to have some good shops in our area whose owners put a ton of work to make the facilities better all the time.

Honestly my biggest frustration is how fast the companies put out new RTR crawlers. I don't see much support on trucks because a company is just gonna put out a new truck in 3 months. Why would a smaller company waste their time producing a part, then it just gets lost in the sauce and nobody wants because a new truck is the hot item. I am one that will not just buy the next new truck. I own 2 crawlers, I don't own a 3d printer so I don't play the 3d printer file game. I own a Knightrunner and would love a interior, can't find someone to print me one. Too many, new trucks, too often! That is my opinion, poor me. Yes, I am jealous on how much people spend on these. I have other hobbies. Love the scale news update.

There is never too much as long as it moves RC forward companies that keep using the same old parts & technology know matter how good have to move forward because now there are so many companies if they don’t update more then just a body eventually it’s going to catch up to them & new companies will step up to replace some of the bigger companies.

I started in RC in the early 80's with a couple of Sears Lobos before moving up a little to the Radio Shack Golden Arrow and finally my first hobby grade car being a Traxxas Bullet. From there i've had everything in the market from offroad buggies and stadium trucks to monsters. I dabbled in Oval and Tamiya touring car racing. The big turning point for me came with the Tamiya TLT. That started me down the path of building custom TLT strait axle scalers and crawlers and of course that led me to present time with my main focus on building custom cars and trucks.

As I am sure others could agree, this week's question is extremely 'broad', and not an easy one to answer. As a small-time KZbinr, with a (currently) small subscriber base, I don't have any specific 'focus' - my channel is not specifically about "helping people", or "providing information", or "running videos", or "build videos"...I try to do a little of everything. And, in order to do that, I rely on access to products (be it RTRs, kits, or individual parts) from all companies, large and small. That being said, after a 35+ year absence from RC, having gotten back into RC approx 7-8 years ago, I discovered a definite 'shift' in the industry. In some aspects, this shift has been 'good', but in other aspects, it has been 'bad'. Because of all of the larger companies...especially those with online purchasing access (Traxxas, Horizon Hobby, Amain, Amazon, etc)...this has, essentially, led to the 'death' of local hobby shops...yes, there are still a lot of shops people can physically walk into to make their purchases, but, I would have to estimate that there are probably less than 10% of the shops there were 30-40 years ago. To me, as well as others, this is one of those 'bad' things...while the ability to purchase online has made the lives of many easier, it is also the cause of not only store closures, but also of people losing jobs. It has also greatly taken away from the "personal" aspect of the hobby. Looking to the 'good' side This is also what has "opened up" The possibility of having all these 'small' companies, weather they are focused on parts, or even full kits...without this, companies such as RTRC, MyTrickRC, Vitavon Racing, Knight Customs, and many others, wouldn't exist. Unfortunately, there is also a 'downside' to this. As I have discovered, sometimes, when it comes to some of these smaller companies (referring primarily to those having only a few employees, especially those having 1-2), the owner/developer can become overly arrogant, even going so far as to tell others that "theirs is the best". I recently came across one such individual who produces his own 1:28 scale (ie Mini-Z) kit, as well as a number of parts for other race vehicles of the same scale, and who's arrogance turned me off so much that I would never want to purchase from him, and probably wouldn't purchase any of his products being sold by other online vendors. One final aspect of this, which is aimed primarily at two companies (of which I'm sure I don't need to name, as almost anyone else could figure out who I'm referring to), is that some of these large companies have become "too big for their britches". As these companies become larger, although the quality might still be good, the level of customer service declines. In the case of one of these two companies, they have bought up so many other companies, that the company, as a whole, becomes 'deluded', which has led to an incredible decrease in the quality of customer service. In the case of the other company, they use their size as an "800 lb gorilla" against the retailers selling their products, which, in turn, also leads to turning off consumers from purchasing that brand. As for what we have in store for the future of our hobby, I wish I knew. Are there too many brands? Possibly. Has the "online world" increased, or decreased, 'access' to the RC hobby (and, technically, other hobbies)? To some extent, I'd say "yes"...but, to a certain extent, I would also have to say "no". What I can say is that it has definitely brought a 'different' group into the hobby...but, it has also led to a departure from the hobby for a great number of people. San Francisco used to have one of the greatest, and largest, hobby shops in the country - Franciscan Hobbies. The store was massive in size, occupying the space of multiple stores. Each 'space' (ie. a 'store' where most of the wall had been removed on 1-2 sides) covered a different hobby (though, the RC area covered the space of 2-3 stores) - there was one area for RC, another for plastic model kits, another for railroad, and a few other areas covering other hobbies. Almost 10 years ago, after being in business for 68 years, they shut their doors due to business showdown caused "by the Internet, by suppliers who undercut the prices in the retail hobby shops, and by a demographic shift." This same 'cause' is what has led to the closure of hobby stores across the country...around the world...and, what continues to lead to closures in the years to come.

@@QuinnsRCYour wording it that way kinda reminds me of the LHS where I now live (Las Vegas). Out here, there's only one (tho, they have two locations), called "Friendly Hobbies". Locally, they are jokingly refer to as "Unfriendly Hobbies". Not sure which end (north, or south) of the EB you're in...but, if you're close to, or don't mind driving to, the South Bay, you definitely want to check out Nor-Cal Hobbies in San Jose - OUTSTANDING shop, friendly people (Eric, the owner, is a great guy, and has extremely helpful/knowledgeable information), and one of the best indoor carpet off-road tracks I've seen. Also, on the weekends, they set up an outdoor asphalt track for on-road racing. Close by, there are two other shops, with equally helpful/friendly people - JJ Customs & Sheldon's Hobbies - of which the latter has an indoor drift track.

I started racing in the mid 90’s. We were lucky to see one sponsored driver locally. Now, it seems like everyone is a contract customer. (If you’re not collecting a paycheck from the company you’re not really sponsored). I think with social media we now have a rise in what I consider to be brand ambassadors. I got into RC in' 85. What I do now is, more customizing, and ground up building. I wish more companies gave specs on their parts. Like body widths and wheel bases. When building something, it would be nice to know if it is what you want, or not. As they say, size matters.

There is a difference between cali lean and Carolina squat! Cali lean only has the rear end 2-4” lower than the front. Carolina squat is the rear has no lift or is even lowered with a lifted front end, and is usually done with some sketchy combination of stacked lift and leveling kit spacers.

Man, I just can't get over that giveaway. Carolina Squat. I live in South Carolina and I can confirm that insanity exists. However, if RC4WD wanted to really make it scale, it needs to be an early 2000s model Tahoe or Yukon on some bald Nitto Trail Graps or Mud Graps, with a driver that resembles a 19yr old guy with bushy hair and a flat billed Patagonia hat turned backwards. He should also be holding a huge vape mod and have a Yeti full of illegally acquired White Claws. Oh... and dual exhaust tips that look to be about scale 10" in diameter. Also, with a HUGE, FURRY steering wheel cover. Then, they'll have the full on Carolina Squat regalia taking place.

I think social media is important. I have a few different people I follow and their advice is my go to when I want to learn more about new products. As nice as it was to see the glossy pages of R/C Car Action back in the day, it was only those companies that could afford to pay the magazine that we saw. Now we can buy from people working out of their garage producing amazing products. Shoot we can buy files that other people create or even design and print our own parts!

Back in the day, print magazines were like an authority. If they said a product is great, you trusted it. If a company did a commercial, you trusted it. But as you mentioned, products and content are available everywhere today. And if it isn't, you make your own. Which is good in a way. But it is difficult to judge, which one you can trust. That's why I am following your show here for example (or SBG and a few more). Bought a product on my own and may have liked it, and may have not. But if YOU recommended it, it always has been good. So you basically replaced the magazine - which is an honor and makes you the authority 🙂

I've only really been "in" the hobby since 2021, so don't have a lot of experience in RC specifically. I'm 55 this year, and although I've led a pretty mundane life, I have that life experience. I'll never be focused enough to be a good enough driver in any niche to get a team sponsorship, and have never competed, so can't speak to that. However, as far as "how much is too much," I believe that diversity is better, just like in any ecosystem. The more variation the more innovation and evolution. RC fanatics with 3D printers setting up their own EBay & Etsy stores is the only way to counteract the conglomeration and monopoly that Horizon represents. But even that's not necessarily bad, because having an apex predator like Horizon consuming little animals makes sure they stay quick and imaginative. I'm grateful for the creativity that social media, especially KZbin, provides. My little channel has three sponsors, and getting a package in the mail I couldn't otherwise afford or justify is amazing. And affiliate marketing is fun! I'm mainly a real estate agent, and I celebrate that $50 every two months from affiliate sales like it was closing a million dollar deal.

I got into crawlers because I liked watching high quality crawler running videos and enjoyed making my own videos. I have seen a shift over the past five years where most videos (or at least the videos that get promoted and viewed) are focused on promoting new products (whether sponsored or independent reviews). I rarely see good scale running videos anymore. I feel like people got away from investing time in making good running videos because it’s not worth it. Has KZbin just become the new Shopping Channel? I think we are spoiled for choice when it comes to manufactures and parts. I do get almost all my info from established KZbin channels and have never been disappointed with anything I’ve purchased no matter where I ordered/bought from. What I find frustrating (as a content creator myself) is that the emphasis is overly weighted towards buying more new stuff, rather than appreciating what we already have. But I’m not just in the hobby to buy new stuff and I take my time waiting for the right new truck to come along or I take my time building trucks the way I want. I didn’t buy a single 1/10 crawler in 2023, mostly due to the dearth of kits. As a result, I often make my videos with “old” trucks. I do appreciate how-to and build videos as well, but again, there has been a shift. Rather than focusing on some general technique or product category, most channels have shifted to just installing some new part and showing how it performs. No one does side-by-side comparisons anymore because that would take too much effort. Low effort, quick turn-around, new releases-that’s what it’s all about these days. Maybe it’s because this segment of the RC market has reached its zenith? You want scale looks? Anyone can buy scale looks. You want performance? Anyone can buy performance, off the shelf. Any body style. Any tire tread pattern. Just buy it.
@HarleyDesignsInc
@HarleyDesignsInc 7 ай бұрын
It is true that running videos do not perform as well therefore creators don't make them as often. It's just a matter of people don't like to watch them as much as new fancy parts and such. People always want to see new, no matter what market it is, how mature the market is, or how long it's been around. It's really just a matter of human nature. People see a video thumbnail of the same truck they've seen over and over, they just think "I've already seen that thing" and move on. Just a wild world we have to deal with as creators for sure.

I am currently taking applications from companies to be their team driver/brand ambassador 😉🤣 Team drivers are also customers for life. All jokes aside, as a sponsored driver, does that status just support their hobby or is there an actual career to be had driving for a team?

There are always turning points in industry. Why I ask you and that Matt guy what do you predict. So when is the bubble burst? I predicted more RC companies coming out with new products. Innovation is key to keeping consumers interests. Where is RC Crawling now? Saturated but the main stay companies that utilize the small business inventors. Always have to include both to keep interest in consuming and creativity.

The more the merrier: I just ignore all the consumerism in the hobby and stick to what I like, which is old and way outdated. The only thing that has been released since I purchased my exciting new futaba 4pl many years ago are the hobby wing fusion systems and Lipo batteries. Those two things are legitimately game changing for any scale builder.

Great news week. As for the question. I have always loved rc. I got my taste of hobby grade in 2002 with my hpi rush Evo nitro stadium truck. I was 12. Back then, there was huge races that happened around voctoria, and kamloops bc canada. I spent summers in victoria, the rest of the year in kamloops. But you work with your local hobby shop They would sponsor you, if you were a decent driver. I had a small sponsorship with the voctoria shop (still shop there today, as I love in victoria full time, and I'm 33 now). Then I took a break for a chunk of years, got into mini bikes and such, parties... you know. But after I lost my vision (legally low vision/blind). I found rc again. But with crawlers. In 2013. Started my youtube in 2014 or 2015. Quak rc. I did have a sponsorship with proline, till they were baught out and the rules changed. I do have a deal with boomracing, but iv slowly moved away from them.. As I am a massive vanquish guy now. Social media has changed so much of it. For the better. And what I love seeing, is people starting their own buisness. I love "mom and pap" shops that build their own stuff. The big companies aren't building as good of stiff. Yes vanquish is big. But you guys aren't as well. The quality has never left. I trust the brand. I trust what you say. And having companies like brazzin, rock pirates, ierc, and now zoku is amazing. Anywho. I love seeing what has become of our hobby. It's just going to get better.

They best way to go is buy parts, make videos, and as videos and communities improve and grow the companies you have already been buying from may then be interested in working together.

@@HarleyDesignsInc thank you I really have been trying to do that a lot on Facebook groups it’s very hard to showcase the traction you gain on posts like that since they are private groups but I do have a couple shorts with my ryft using vanquish axles guess I could shoot some vs410 ultra videos too 😂🤣

I’m guilty of being a social media creator in the RC content world, and have had a few smaller brands reach out for content in exchange for product but they don’t fit my nitch so I turn them down, what I have done is spent my own money on products and make an honest review video explaining the bad parts and issues I have found with a chassis, all the die hard redcat drifters hated me after my honesty but I think they should take the facts and make version 2.0 a better product, learn from the first one not a defend a terrible product that KZbinrs get for free and have to talk nice about.

I’ve never been to an IFMAR or SORRCA sanctioned RC event. I have however been to local events that are purely for the fun of it. Sponsorship probably makes more sense if you live in a warmer state than Indiana. If I was a manufacturer I would likely put more of my marketing budget into KZbin. Do sponsorships still grant folks a per diem account? I know those can quickly get out of hand😀

I do not trust anyone, that is why always look for multiple sources of information. Sometimes digging through "looks good" reviews is annoying when I want someone to grab the front wheel and wiggle the steering system so I could see how much slop there is out of the box etc. With a new and completely unknown manufacturer I usually try to buy some cheaper part with precision features that I can use and give that manufacturer at least two chances. For example if bearing holes are too large on two separate orders then probably not going to buy parts with those features from that manufacturer again.

I look for smaller companies ideally in the US or Canada. Look for real, onest reviews or videos on the product.

Personally i don't use FB, IG etc. I am aware the 1000 little options are around but have little interest in it. I prefer the long form presentation of forums and youtube videos. When within my means i much prefer to make things myself rather than buy them. I just find a greater satisfaction in that overall. If i require aluminum or brass i see what my LHS sells to start before branching out to search the established boutique fabricators that are well known in the community

I think today’s social media will ruin your own creativity, instead of make your own decisions, you look what others do. Of course this doesn’t apply to all of us, but there is a risk that you only end up looking at your phone instead of creating something of your own.
