This is cool info. My dad (rip) was a conscript military firefighter during his national service in the 60's here in Finland. Later he was a volunteer firefighter and a volunteer firechief in his home village. A true running-towards-fire hero.

Meanwhile my country (Singapore) sends some conscripts to become civilian firemen instead (while others may become policemen) & I think they get activated more frequently than military conscripts

As a civilian FF and a military history nerd (with a passion for logistics history since I was a merchant mariner in the last) I’m so glad you covered this. About a decade ago, parts of CT saw snow fall to levels not seen in almost a life time. Many of the streets in Bridgeport CT became impassible. A guard TFFT was activated to the city and worked at least on job as memory serves.

I'm a 12M in the NG, and I really appreciate the thoughtfulness you put into this. We're also authorized a Brassard like MPs, ours says "FD" Doctrinally, it's weird for us because we're obviously following the TM but we also have to follow NFPA to the letter. Sometimes they don't agree with each other, and we have to get creative or choose which one to follow. For anyone wondering, the Air Force fire apparatus are significantly better at firefighting than the TFFTs are, but they aren't nearly as off-road capable.

Question: Any chance you could go into more detail on how the organization works in those spaces where it's largely civilian? For example, Fort Carson in Colorado has wildfires seemingly daily and they often manage it perfectly with their own assets. Working in EM, Clarification on just how often those civilians versus 12M billets and how the wildland world influences the military world would be well appreciated. Heck, you had video from the Black Forest Fire, any explanation on DSCA would be a huge boon to US viewers and honestly, with FEMA typings and Type 1 wildfires you could totally help some of the people nerd out by doing a Battle Order video on FEMA typings in various incidents. That's probably a bit out of scope, especially with so many other topics to choose from, but one can dream.
@cruisinguy60249 ай бұрын
Great video, as always, however you left out Navy/Marine Corps bases not to mention firefighting vehicles on aircraft carriers. Perhaps you could remedy this in a future video? Minor point of order, most of the imagery you used for the 75’ quints were actually 100’ class quints. The dead giveaway is that 75’ ladder trucks have a single rear axle whereas 100’ class (meaning anything from 97’ to 107’ depending on manufacturer and model) have tandem rear axles for a total of 10 tires. ****minor note, Pierce does now offer a 107’ single rear axle quint that’s highly weight optimized. I see this as a niche option for weight restricted areas, such as departments with bridges that can’t take the abuse of an 80,000 pound truck.

My dad has done this for 20 years, worst part of the job is how little the army cares about their trucks. They had a series of incidents in the early 2000s where crash trucks would often slip out of park and into drive while conducting maintenance on top of the water tank. Killed one of my dads good friends, almost got him too, only way to stop it is to jump off the top and into the cab. army didnt fix it for another 5 years, sad state of affairs.

@BattleOrder9 ай бұрын
For these tactical/deployable firefighters they are 12Ms and are recruited like any other soldier in the Army, although it's a small MOS so there are limited active duty spots. They are authorized guns. But most firefighters that serve Army bases domestically and in allied countries are actually civilian employees and more like regular firefighters with civilian fire apparatuses instead of HEMTT-based ones

When I was in primary school we visited the local RAAF base. They had incredible fire trucks. They were massive Oshkosh (B'Gosh!!) - they kinda looked like a modern HEMTT. They had water cannon on the bumper bar, the roof and I think they had a boom that could crack an aircraft fueslage skin and pump in water/foam. A lot like the TFFT in this video, but the front turret was lower, like on a bumber bar and I think the cab was lower and there was just one cab. The amount of water they could pump was incredible as was their accelration and braking (for thir size). They were truly incredible. Basically the driver could fight a fire remotely aiming the water cannon and the other crew could get out and do rescure work, e.g. pull a crew out of a jet or whatever. This was 40 years ago and that thing was impressive - I'd love to see today's versions. I always had an urge to buy one - make the perfect van life vehicle. Lots of stowage and the cab was probably as big as a small van's. And of course no shortage of water on board.
