In order to make a diet soda (at least one people would popularly drink), a sugar substitute was needed. The first such artificial sweetener, saccharin, was discovered by accident. In the late 19th century, Constantin Fahlberg, after a long day working at the lab of the famed chemist Ira Remsen in Baltimore, Maryland, was at home eating dinner when he picked up a roll and bit into it. The roll was incredibly sweet.

People who don't understand why or how diet soda is healthier, It's not what the artificial sweeteners _are made of,_ compared to sugar, It's _how much is used._ Sugar takes up a *huge* volume of regular drinks. If you evaporate the water, you'll have a third of the bottle left of _pure, raw sugar._ Hence a sh** load of calories. And bad on teeth because of the microbes which love it as much as we do. Artificial sweeteners take up between 1 - 2 percent of the same volume sugar does. Because they are hundreds of times more sweet, to our taste buds, only a _very tiny_ amount is added. This tiny percent amounts to negligible calories. Evaporate a diet soda and you'll see none of the volume which sugar left behind. You are free to debate whether these other sweeteners have bad qualities (nothings perfect, for sure). Just keep in mind that being more sweet, chemically speaking, doesn't mean anything health wise - it just means that substance tickles the sweet sensors on our taste buds more effectively. Also being artificial _in and of itself_ doesn't make something more or less healthy. There's no fundamental correlation there. It's just the chemical makeup of the substance.

My grandfather (a diabetic) used to drink No-Cal soda, and Black Cherry! (I thought it was disgusting myself.) I live within walking distance of Kingsbrook, and even went to their ER in grade school to have a pencil lead removed from just below my knee, and later in High School when I fractured my thumb. As for artificial sweeteners, I can't stand any of them. They all taste like chemicals to me, and most don't taste sweet at all. Aspartame actually makes me quite nauseous.

Diet Rite was developed in the RC Cola laboratory in Columbus, Georgia, then home to RC, and was, I believe, the first diet COLA drink. All of the ones you named before Diet Rite was fruit or other flavors.

That's why I go to Amazon and but my juice in bulk, you can get fifteen cans of coke for £6 and right cans of cherry coke for £4. I usually buy thirty cokes and sixteen cherry cokes, viola forty six cans of juice for £20 rather than going to the local shops and forking out nearly a pound a can

I'm surprised you didn't bring up aspartame, the most rejected substance in the history of the FDA (and is still a banned substance in most of Europe). It was only approved in the US in 1980 when an executive for the company that produced aspartame was made director of the FDA. Aspartame now dominates in "diet" sodas, and although correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation, the 1980s is about the time when cancer rates began to skyrocket in the US.

I think a video on the cyclomate cotroversy would be a great follow up. Back in the 60's we would by a 10¢ package of artificially sweetend koolaid, add water and ice and sell it to commuters on their way home from the nearby train station. Cyclomates were eventually band ending that business. 🙁

I avoid diet drinks because I heard it messes with our metabolism. Our body produces enzymes to break down sugar. If our body tastes sweet on the toung and no sugar arrives for it break it down then next time we eat something sweet our body may not have the available enzymes to break down the sugar. Given that type 2 diabetes runs in my family I try to eat healthy, avoid excessive sugar in my diet and I work a physical job. My goal is not to live to a hundred but to have at least 10-20 good years of retirement.
