Maybe to today’s ears Hendrix and Cream aren’t heavy metal but just imagine what those albums sounded like back in the day when hearing for the first time.

I think Cream on their live albums sound heavier than the studio albums…and I think in general the recordings from the late 60s and early 70s don’t always sound as heavy as they would if recorded later or with different production. Blue Oyster Cults debut comes to mind. The songs are written pretty heavy but not recorded that heavy…..guitars are kind of clean, keyboards up in the mix,not a lot of low end etc…but just picture Transmaniacon MC(or Tales of Brave Ulysses for that matter to go back to Cream)keeping everything the same but swap out the guitar sound with Tony Iommis Master Reality sound and you get a couple pretty heavy metal songs!

I was just thinking that , the live material was so heavy , so raw and loud ..,

Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer are the early bands of hard rock and even heavy metal.🎶🎤🎸🎸🥁🎶

There's some great clips of Blue Cheer covering Summertime Blues on yt - it's very heavy, forget proto metal, it's almost proto-Megadeth!

I would give it to Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Judas Priest really invented the classic or traditional heavy metal sound that the NWOBHM wave then took on.

I love this sort of analysis. Great series! One like this on post-punk would be interesting too.

I forgot about Ginger singing here. His only other vocal was Pressed Rat and Warthog, and that’s a spoken word piece.

Would their live album from The Albert Hall in '68 possibly be a candidate for this? "Sunshine of Your Love", "Politician", and "Spoonful" were monstrous in that show. Jack Bruce's velvet tones were way more gritty, and he sang so damn loud that even when there wasn't an accidental growl, he still distorted the PA or whatever they used.

Good series. I've always thought that if heavy metal is a tree, the roots are Cream, Hendrix, Blue Cheer, and Mountain (and others in the 60d). The trunk of the tree would be Zep, Sabbath, Purple, Budgie, and a big influencer would be Wishbone Ash (and other bands in the 70s). Then all the branches of the tree are what we have today.

Heavy metal certainly had its origins prior, but the genre took form when Black Sabbath released 'Black Sabbath'. Geezer Butler confessed Black Sabbath - 'Black Sabbath'' main riff is based on 1918 orchestral suite by Gustav Holst - The Planets - Mars, the Bringer of War.

Tales of Brave Ulysses is a spooky and heavy song and Cream were sounding much heavier live.

I wish I like this album more - I know it's always being brought up as so foundational, but I find it just drags on

The only Clapton I like. Never really liked him that much, but Cream had some songs. Clapton's solo stuff stinks to me. Cocaine is awful.
