I was a kid when I read the article about him in the Overstreet Gruide, but I recall he said that one day he went to a newstand and saw all of these very colorful covers. They were so colorful you couldn't see one from the other. So he went back to his studio and put out black covers. They sold because they stood out. A few months later he went back to that Newsstand and all the covers were black and dark. So he went to his studio and put out very colorful coers. It was all about standing out

Never a disappointment, always a joy! Best comics channel hands down! I love that it sometimes takes twice the running time to watch a video as i am always pausing to check stuff out more closely.

Yes, Cole's work enjoyed a resurgence of interest among fans in the 1970s/1980s. But from my memory of the period, Cole was a polarizing figure -- in the same way Wolverton, Hanks, and Boody Rogers were polarizing figures. The people coming out of EC/Underground fandom like Crumb loved Cole. But Marvel/DC fans, who at the time were geared towards the Neal Adams synthesis, thought his work was crude, childish, off-putting. I remember people speculating (absurdly) that Bob Overstreet was engaged in some sort of insider trading or kickback scheme to promote the talentless Cole. This was, to be clear, a false and dumb idea -- a product of people trained to prize one type of photorealism not recognizing the value of other styles.

10:34, so this cover totally reminds me of the later Monty Python fish slapping skit 🐟! Love the humor Mr. Cole included here. I have some "pre-code horror comics art" coloring books, which definitely include some of his illustrations. They are a BLAST to color, especially with pops of fluorescent/neon highlighters~ The wilder the coloring, the better!

Reminds me of the old Mexican black velvet paintings that portrayed religious icons. It wasn't just the color on those images; it was the symbolic elements, devils and skeletons and flames. His influence seemed to skip a generation, because Silver Age comics were maybe shy about attracting too much attention. Especially Crumb, but also Spain really seemed to think about creating lurid, impactful covers and logos and I don't know about Cole, but I believe Jay Lynch was a big fan of Vince Fago's funny animal comics, which seem to have inspired Cole's animated characters. Fago's characters had this crazed, coked-up look to them. Those eyes...

Wow, even though most (if not all) were after my time, this still brings back memories, not only were many of these in the nickel and dime boxes at flea markets (except for the horror ones) when I was a kid, I'm seeing genres that I had forgotten were also still being put out on the store shelves when I was a kid too. War comics were big still (Rock, Haunted Tank, Blackhawks reprints, Sgt Rock, Losers, and half-dozen more). GI. Joe by Larry Hama kept that going and even All-Star Squadron and 'Nam to a degree. Funny Animals were dwindling, but Capt Carrot and Spider-Ham kept that at least represented. Even Westerns (a fav of mine) was still doing well with Jonah Hex, Scalphunter, Red Wolf, Ghost/Night Rider and reprints of the Kids (Two-Gun, Rawhide and Colt) Colt, and more. Jungle adventures got a shot in the arm with Ka-Zar, Black Panther and a few. But do any of those still draw in numbers? Are they even being represented on the shelves? Almost don't want to find out so I can keep in blissful ignorance.

yep, love this guy. Lee Brown Coye and Matt Fox too, similar stylists. I can see bits of Cole's influence all over the first wave underground cartoonists, from Spain to Irons to Trina Robbins to Jaxon.

A lot of L.B. Cole's original art was destroyed in a flood, he lived in the St. Louis Area. That is why he did the recreations. That is the story passed on to me when I was hunting for books/art in the 90s.
