I used to do art in the small press back in the day and Chadbourne was an artists who was always discussed as being one of the best in the field. It is such a surprise to see y'all covering his work!!

Love to see Chadbourne do a Red Room variant cover!

Chadbourne also has some stories published in the anthology Grave Tales by Cemetery Dance (who also published his Stephen King work).

Damn, this is some of the coolest outlaw comics you guys have ever dug up. Blast the Kayfabe effect, now I’m never going to be able to stop looking for these! But yes, a reprint collection would be more than welcome.

This was absolutely delightful. The way you guys just love comics so purely and see the intention of different types of creators is awesome!

This is THE SHIT! Will definitely snap up a reprint if it ever materializes.

The first book was one of my favorite random finds at this comic shop I’d go to in a warehouse in Tampa. The art is so god damn good.

Has a heavy Ian Miller influence looking at that line work and imagery, especially the trees and fish!

Get the Fantagraphics crew to put out some snazzy hardcovers of this, start a series of outlaw comics by creator!

That reminds me of a 1992 self-published comic I found digging a few months ago called Maine Zombie Lobstermen by Mike Hall! There's definitely something in the water up there!!

Cry for Dawn (Linsner/Monks) in the early 90's. One of the best indie horror comics I've read. First saw them at Fango where they had a table and were selling their comic. Bought the first one and the second -even though second 's color cover printing wasn't finished yet so it came with a photocopied cover. LOL

I would back a Kickstarter to reprint these. This is amazing stuff, I dearly want copies of my own to pour over.

Reminds me of 2000AD era Kevin O'Neill and Simon Bisley, a bit of a cross between the two, without really looking like either.

Killer and inspiring! Chadbourne's style reminds me a little of UK dark fantasy artist Ian Miller. Would make a very interesting interview shoot!

Feel like he used a mirror @19:50 to get the symmetry, but then decided it'd be cooler to freestyle the reflection rather than cheat. This is great.

Excellent stuff! Thanks for sharing. I would kill to see Chadbourne do a H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, that would be so sick. Also, Fantagor... Fantagore is a great name, much better than Fantaco.

"chillville" is not a word I would use for the comic. It would be more like "Yikes!" kind of vibe or "They came from the pit". Then again I would probably get chills if I read this as a 8 year old kid that loved pokemon.

What?! This guy lives 30 minutes from me. Let's be friends, Glenn! What's super weird is I discovered this comic earlier today having no idea it was Maine-made or that Kayfabe had covered it 2 days ago. Destiny?

The two volumes of Secretary Of Dreams are also comics but they were expensive collectors items when they were released, so they'll probably cost a great deal now. Glad to see him mentioned, I discovered him through Farmer Fiend and was never able to find Chillville. He has an art book. People are right to compare Ian Miller and I'd add John Coulthart. All of them horror illustrators who made a small but intensely detailed body of comics work. Coulthart's Lord Horror is arguably more outlaw, he and the writer had their work banned in the 90s, how much more outlaw can you ask?

His art is very reminiscent of Dave Brockie from Gwar. If you haven't yet, check out some of the old Slave Pit Funnies, Dave would do at least one story per issue.

The woman panel at 6:00 minutes is so great, as it made me think about when I said how devoted I felt to the Indy comics when i was a kid, and some comic marveleete asked why Id be that way, since comics aren't what they used to be, and more open and thoughtful and well, bullshit, now, and I realized that i was still on the side of all those people who made cartoons and comics that the hectares and the PTA and the Dar HATED SO MUCH, EVERYTHING COMES TO ME FROM EC and mad, AND NATL LAMPOON. Although I'm not necessarily a fan of the horror genera, still, ..I have gotten more EC like vampire stuff published than say any Roman knights of supermen I've done. NOW I THINK I have to be truer to that mimeograph ethic than I have ever been, as white washing and sanitizing is never as decent and the creeps with the buckets ever thought it was.
