This was the story told by americans about how cellular telephone evolved in the USA. If you include the cellular phone history from the Nordic countries, (Sweden, Finland Norway, Denmark) you will get a completely different story. In 1967 a Swedish engineer at the Swedish telephone authority initiated the first cellular system, together with the telephone authorities in Denmark, Norway and Finland. That came out as NMT, Nordic Mobile Telephone. It was first set up in Saudi Arabia in 1981and then in the Nordic countries. The Swedish telephone authority, that had changed it's name to Telia also entered the US marked and together with Ericsson, the Swedish telephone company, became marketing leader there.

Great video ! This reminds me of 1980 when I was working at Racal Research labs on a project adapted to conform to the new GSM standard which was being developed. The project was so successful that it was split off into a separate company... Vodaphone. I just wish I had bought some shares back then :-(

I like my mobile, but for every positive there comes a negative. Now that mobiles have GPS capability, you have no idea that the person pulling up in the right turn lane is suddenly going to make a left across six lanes of traffic, usually against a light. I don't use the GPS feature, which means that someone will call at the worst possible time; if I'm driving or in the water closet, the phone will inevitably ring. (I have no idea who a nurse talked to on my phone while I was under general anesthesia. All she told me was that someone had called.) It was ground breaking tech, but it's become sort of akin to cargo shorts; you have a void to fill, so let's pack in a camera a typewriter you need a special tool to use, two cameras, and an internet package so you can watch silly cat videos at Starbucks. Yes, I can call support from the field, but I'm tired of whacking my head on things when I'm working underneath a piece of equipment when someone insists on having a conversation via text and sending me pictures of the dog playing in snow every 30 seconds.

I like your channel, but in this case you missed what happened in Sweden long before all others. The first mobile phone system (MTA) was introduced in 1956, and lasted until 1967. The following systems where in use during the years 1962-1983 (MTB) and 1971-1987 (MTC). In 1981 the Nordic Mobile Telephony (NMT) was introduced.

Its so strange. As a Swede you never really hear this story. Because in Europe it was mostly ericsson at that time. Ericsson made the first mobilephone and NMT and Televerket (as Telia were called those days.) So its strange to hear that ericsson wasnt even in the mixture here? According to Swedish wiki it was Sweden who invented the very first Mobilnetwork. Not AT&T. And this allready in the 1950´s. But it seems that Motorola did get this first mobilephone. But I think it was Ericsson who did use the word Smartphone the very first time. It was kinda standing between Nokias Communicator and Ericsson Smartphone, and now we use the Ericsson word smartphone.

You never told the whole story two other companies where also involved EF Johnson (from the CB Fame) who built the base stations for the first Cell Site in Chicago and also OKI Data who built the first in Car Mobile Phone. OKI Date got out of the Cell phone business year later and EF Johnson developed the must popular LTR Trunking Radio system which gave the radio user automatic excess to 20 channels for Push To Talk Systems so no waiting for a Clear Shared Channel. Some are still operation today .
