They did the mages so dirty in the first SO games. Thankfully the later games would rectify this somewhat. Anway, you're right about most of this, they did a very poor job at balancing Ronyx with the main 4 characters. Seriously, his bows don't even increase his MAG stat! Also, have you play the Cave of the 7 Stars? That dungeon will test your patience with it's constant ambushes, enemies stunlocking you from afar, and swarming your healers. Lastly, it's See-us, not Caius.

Haha thank you. Yeah about the mages, I don’t think Star Ocean ever really corrects this. Star Ocean 4 and 6 has busted physical attackers and the mages are meh.

@@locloudanerpg mages are more used for interrupting enemies so your physical attacks can get in hits between their blocking. it's nice in higher difficulty in So2 when enemies will block everything if you don't have enough hit.

About that for Universe mode Celine Noel Leon are still PURE CRAP and Claude/Dias get the Marvel Sword 100% hit rate + Chisato for her 100% hit weapon the 4th slot is to Bloody armor armor Claude Dias Chisato and OPERA immediately at lv 100 on DISC 2 NEVER remove it and have healing star at 999 uses Immediately OR MAX skill lv for Healing Star via BP spend in the upcoming PS4 PS5 Switch remake of it.

Recently just restarted SO1 I had Erys in my group and loved her but sacrificing Mavelle was tragic so I’m going to keep Mavelle on my second playthrough. Ashlay kept dying on my first playthrough even at high levels so I’m definitely not going to utilize him this second playthrough and I may skip out on ioshua.

My team is Roddick, Ilia, Phia, Erys. Ilia and Phia are so fun to play as with their combos/aerial arts. I don't really care for Mavelle because she has equipment that usually has an element associated with it leading to healing the enemy and her MP drains quickly so I find myself using her poor short range regular attack.

IMHO Phia/Erys/T'nique/Welch/Cyuss/ioshua are PURE CRAP and are NEVER in my party NEVER LOSE Mavelle for Erys since Erys is PURE CRAP and Marvelle IS worth keeping.

Yep, my exact party, and before I get Erys I use Ioshua. It's an easy game you don't need the best party, you need party that you like.

Chisato in Star Ocean 2 was an absolute beast. Her very first attack, Twister/Roaring Cartwheel is one of the best multi-hit and stunlock attacks there is, and it's ridiculously cheap. Just spam it and win.

I prefer reuniting the siblings, thus I like Erys over Marvell. I also don't mind having two spell casters that can heal and buff the party. Roddrick and Ilia is more than enough for most fights.

Well...after SO2R if they were to remake 1 again with the same artwork and combat changes, specifically removing spell pause, a party with 2 mages, especially Erys, would likely beat out the 3 phys plus 1 healer parties that are currently the most optimal way to play as we'd be able to throw screen wide nukes into the mix.

I recently started star ocean and i have most of the good characters i have millie and mavale as well as Joshua who i think is a pretty good unit aside from getting killed i also have cyuss whos kinda useful and i have ryox who i just now noticing how aragant he can be as a offensive mage tho when stacked with Joshua both work in tandom together so they're not all bad tho i have yet to give mavale a shot i currently trying to beat the trail chamber but im also grinding lv so i can get their skills up

Personally, I think Pericci is very underrated here. You only really seem to care about damage but Pericci is a godly tank that does reasonable damage AND is required to get the only mount in the game. I feel like she's one of those characters you pretty much always want if you have room to recruit her. Not to mention she can easily solo the game when properly equipped. She's that damn good.

Fantastic list.. First star ocean is a weird beast. I think it got a few REALLY strong. And the rest imo or VERY LOW. To me Tinek,Phia and Peressie are the mid fighters that should never be considered. Ashley and Welch are horrible. The mages are imo at best supporters. And their damage potential is just to low. AND HOW DID THEY MESS UP THEIR MAIN BLACK MAGE. we are 3 remakes in atnd they actively makes him the worse party member. It's like a joke but no one is laughing at the crippled bowman. However the very best are godly. . I tend to kick Ratix the first chance I get due to his brokeness and add Cius as my main fighter. That said Mavenke is simply a force of nature. Absolute busted. Incredible list :(

I like a balanced party by the end game, so Roddick & Cyuss were never on the same team once I had 8 party members. Serve a similar function, though still have cool unique setups to separate them. Roddick, Millie, Ilia, Ronyx. Cyuss, Phia, Pericci, Iohsua. (Would drop Pericci for Mavelle next playthrough, easily.)

T'nique with spinning staff, ring of might and berserker ring. Literally just tore though the game and post game controlling him in preparation for SO2's remake. He also has really high guts so he can stunlock enemies endlessly. He's really underrated imo.

hp is such a viable stat, everyone at 9999 but really is this the only game where the main character is at the top. i'd still put hit at number 1 stat if needed.

For solo in this game ONLY do that with Roddick Marvelle ilia or Ashley only I still prefer Roddick since NOT only can you still get the MARVEL Sword before the Pirates hideout raid in this one it still gives out the same NEVER miss stat that 2nd story/evolution has for that weapon. On a SOLO run at 100% PHYSICAL hit rate is a must and ONLY Roddick can equip it.

You missed Mavelle because you have Cyuss without Ioshua.

I recall Cyuss having a weapon that increased his ATK per hit, if he himself wasn't hit. Buffing that one stat to increase his movement speed and equipping the ring to attach more battle skills made him an absolute monster. Enjoy his character too much to skip him, so I don't mind Roddick staying decent. Think I found a way to make Ronyx work, though bow not scaling with magic took alot of experimenting.

Cyuss is still pure CRAP only Marvelle Pericci and Ashlay are the only optional party members worth it the REST are PURE CRAP so Cyuss/ioshua/T'nique/Phia/Welch/Erys all SUCK and are NEVER in my party ever.

@@veghesther3204 He's definitely not. Cyuss is a stun lock monster with Double Slash & Godspeed levelled. As with the first 3 Star Oceans; if you approach the character with patience and love, you will discover they are secretly godlike with the right setup. Bless Adray. They don't know. ( ;T ~ T)

@@ManOfLegs He bashes all of the mages of the first two Star Oceans. He basically blasted me for daring to say I rather reunite the siblings instead of keeping Marvelle. I don't like it when people try to force their own opinions on others as if they are gospel. The only character that I know sucks and I wish I never recruited is Welch in the two PSP games, I will never recruit Welch in any playthrough that she is an active party member, now in SO3 where she is only a crafter that's fine.

I feel like going worst to best is actually way worse than best to worst, since for the bad characters you have to compare them to the good characters which you have not covered yet but for the good characters explaining why they are good doesn't really require the context of the bad characters.

Man did you just straight up not play the game at all? You're pronouncing 2 names wrong. Joshua is pronounced "Yohshua" (he says it right away) and the Cyuss is pronounced "Seeyus" not "Kaiyus"

The game is voice acted in English my guy. There’s no reason to get Cyuss’s name wrong. It’s pronounced see-yus. They even say his name several times at the beginning of the game.
