As somebody who spent 8 months in a chinese university and met and talked to a lot of chinese, I can confidently say they are just people like the rest of us, some like china, some want to move abroad, some want to work abroad and then settle at home, some are racist, some are not.... Overall I had a great experience and everyone was really friendly, an experience I would recommend to anyone :)

Thomas Chen I agree with you. But for those who have not been to China, China is made of many ethnic group. As long as you can pass and become Chinese citizen and your ethnicity is government recognized, u can be 100% Chinese. For example, a Russian passes and gets Chinese citizenship, because Russian is a recognized Chinese ethnicity, like Han, you can be Chinese by blood too.

Noticing a difference doesn't make you racist. Just observant. The difference exists because: History of black people: oppressed by white people. [pride from survival] History of white people: oppressing everybody else. [pride from genocide] Being proud to be Irish or Greek or Latvian is not the same as being proud to be white. The first 3 are countries, the last one is a race. Race was made up 500 years ago just to say that the 'white' race is better. Countries were not invented just to claim they are the best country and that they will invade all the others. Race was made like that though. That's why white pride isn't the same as black pride.

Chinese as a word in English, as far as I know, refer to 1. Nationality ie citizen of China (中国人）2. As a race, people of China ancestry, the ancestry of the dragon（华人，汉人，唐人）. The latter are people with certain physical characteristic such as yellow skin, black hair (that include Korean and Japanese) and practice certain value such as hard work, thrifty, family oriented, emphasis in education (Confucious) as well as speaking the common Chinese language (include its dialect) .

Everybody can be Chinese nationally. Not everyone can be Chinese ethnically. If you are Russian, and turned Chinese nationally, you become Chinese, but if you are British, and turned Chinese nationally, you are not. Because, currently there are only 56 recognized ethnicd in China. If you can fall under one of the categories, and fully assimilated in China, congrats, you can become Chinese! Dont worry, many other Ethnics may be added to the lot, if China decides to revise it. But disclosing your minority status may be frowned upon. Ps. I have many ethnic Korean, Muslim, and Russian friends. They are more Chinese than me, cause they hold a Chinese passport, which I never had. I hide my Americaness very well in China, so people view me as Chinese, but if I disclose myself as an american or act american, then they will be quick to label me as a foreigner. I have ethnic features, but as long as I act, speak, think Chinese, most Chinese will say I'm Chinese, just like the two ethnic guys in the show.

Funny thing about all these pure blood nonsense. Many people in China claiming to be pure blooded Han Chinese aren’t even pure blooded Han Chinese. Also Mainlanders in China already destroyed there history and cultures because of the cultural revolution, book burning, artifacts destroying, replaced old gods for Mao, and even changing the written language to simplified. China has been interbreed with many cultures because of invasions and control by foreign empires and also alliances with other kingdoms. Even the language they are speaking now (Mandarin) is a hybrids language created by the Mongol Empire and the Jurchen (Northern Chinese.) The Jurchen are also known as the Manchurians later on and Modern day Chinese consider them as foreign oppressors. Beside Chinese are intermixed with small local minorities over the centuries like the Min and Dai people. China also has the Hui(Turks), Tibetan, and the Mongol having large influences in modern day Chinese culture. The whole “Pure Blood” Nonsense is a lie and the PRC is feeding their people lies hoping to turn everyone the same. You could look all over China everyone looks different depending which region you go, their cultures are different. Physically they look different. At least during the ROC time people were more honest about who they are and even has a multicultural flags for all the major influences of China. Even the so called Han Chinese are made up of different ethnic groups but ending up their languages becoming dialects but physically and culturally they are very distinct. What is even more funny the PRC want to create the Han Chinese way in China but they instead oppressed languages and cultures that are older and closer to ancient Han Chinese. It’s just hypocrisy. They don’t even know what they are doing. The Problem most overseas Chinese love China and the history and the culture but they don’t love the government. Just like how the people of the PRC don’t love the ROC the government before them and they don’t love the Qing Dynasty and called them foreign oppressors. Many people outside the PRC would think the people of the ROC are more Chinese since they kept all the traditions of China from the mannerism and even family values because the PRC supported Marxism.
