Annnnd just like that, I know everything about Christy! I have to admit Dan, that when I started watching your channel, I thought Christy was your wife. Now I know better. You guys are a hell of a team and quite dynamic in front of the camera. Keep up the great work!

Reminds me of those Polaroid commercials with Jim Garner and Mariette Hartly. They had such good chemistry that she actually got a T-shirt made that said "I'm Not Jim Garner's Wife."

I came here from a podcast about American Airlines Flight 191, which crashed in Chicago on May 25, 1979, some 30 miles from my home. I had just turned 10 years old and don't remember much about it. I liked Christy's voice and decided to see what she looked like, because, you know, that's what really matters.

I think I saw you during the day at Theatre in the Woods at the Oshkosh EAA convention. It was your map leggings. I kept trying to see what geography the map was covering. Yeah,well I thought I better go back to looking at aircraft before I get noticed. I was wondering if you made them yourself from material or if they are commercially available. Really unique and something that is unforgettable. Great to see you and many other great people on You Tube. Just stumbled on this channel by following Juan Brown.

Holy Moly! I have the same interest in aviation accidents! I am also a student pilot that has started into the PPL journey in my 50's. I don't know why, but I really am intrigued by how aircraft can have accidents and most are human error and how i can avoid the same mishaps. i always have been, yet here I am learning to fly. Sometimes it seems surreal.

A friend's father was in the FAA. I remember seeing copies of Aviation Week and another magazine that was monthly NTSB reports. A smart person learns from their mistakes. A wise person learns from other people's mistakes. (Almost free lessons, paid for by others)

I study aviation accidents too. Kathyryn's report and FlightRadar24 give quite a bit of insight into most accidents. There's a lot to learn from most of them. We had a Cirrus go in up on the NAPPI (it's a commercial farm, too much to explain) earlier this spring. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever know why he didn't pull the chute, why he flew into IMC and some pretty gnarly weather, and how it all happened, and that bugs me. I spent a lot of time trying to help find him once I heard SARS announce an aircraft was down. I found him on FlightRadar24 and had a pretty good idea where he was... but I thought he had pulled his chute... and this would become a book if I kept writing so I'll stop. I really enjoyed the look into the life of Christy. She expresses her emotions well. On another note, I finished an extended BFR after not flying for 23 years and 27 days (not that I was counting or anything) today. Man it sure feels good to say "I'm a pilot". My instructor and I were joking at the end of the flight about how much easier it'll be to pick up chicks. I told him I could say "here's my card... oh wait, my mistake, that's my P I L O T's license :) It's been a good day...

Christy, there is a take home lesson for you at American Eagle from that Alaska Airlines Flight 261. If you have sick flight controls but manage to get the aircraft stable, don't keep fiddling with things (trim pitch) and make a problem worse: get the aircraft on the ground (or ditch in control), then let maintenance diagnose the problem.

I really enjoyed learning more about Christy's background, I just loves the way she lights up when talking about flying. Ok since Christy and Dan have admitted their addiction to aircraft accidents, I have to come clean myself, I am a Smithsonian Channel "Air Disasters" addict, there I said it. But as was mentioned in this video, it's more about understanding the why for me rather than morbid curiosity. Understanding the why, I hope makes us better pilots. Great show guys, really enjoy your channel.

@@briangarcia8986 In general, I have insufficient information at this time to make public statements, although it appears to have a severe case of incompetence on the part of Boeing (most likely a consequence of meddling from Marketing and Accounting) along with dereliction on the part of the FAA (likely from fraternization and paternalism) --- still way too early to make definitive statements

Dan, That was PSA flight 182 in San Diego. The 727-200 hit the Cessna from behind. I lived and instructed at that time in Ca. It was reported on the local and state news that the Cessna approached the 727 from behind...obviously not. Sadly, there was a local reporter who was demonstrating why it was "so hard for the instrument student to see out of the hood." The reporter had actually borrowed an instrument hood and was looking through the perforated head band adjustment holes...if you guys can believe that! One of my Cobra pilot friends...his wife was an FA for PSA and had several close colleagues who died on that 727. She quit the following day. If I recall correctly, either the PF or PM acknowledged they had the traffic called out to them but then the CVR revealed there was some doubt to that affirmation. I think the Cessna collision knocked out some hydraulics which cause asymmetry problems with the kreuger flaps. Bad deal. There was a DC-9 accident I think you were referencing that was a midair with a Piper or other single engine aircraft over the LA area. All fatals. I too have loved studying aviation accidents over the years, especially part 135 and 121. They humble you and make you realize that even the best trained aviators can have very bad days resulting in tremendous losses. Look no further than Atlas Air's 767 loss in 2019. Even the head of the NTSB said the FO never should have occupied the right seat. He had the 767 in a 46° nose down dive from 6,000' after thinking he was in a stall (No cockpit indications or aural warnings (i.e. stickshaker, lights, etc). His hand hit by accident the TOGA switch and the auto throttles went to GA position and the plane pitched...he reacted inappropriately and pitched over. Unfortunately, the captain did not intervene in time to avert the impending tragedy about to take place. This pilot withheld a few former employers off his ATLAS application where he had failed checkrides and been cited for poor performance. Take care you two!

Okay this is interesting, as guidance it’s a bit vague. I see that she bought a plane, the Cherokee, at what point in her career did that happen? In order to go from 0 hours to landing a job a regional how many hours per day/week did she fly? 3 years is accelerated but also expensive

Taking Off thanks, the reason I’m asking is because I’m starting to realize that to hit the 1500 hour goal at my age where full time instructing just wouldn’t make financial sense-buying a plane is going to be the most viable option. @ 2 hours per week at 52 weeks that’s almost 100 hours per year. Yet, without full time instructing later in my career - 100 hours a year will barely make a dent in reaching that 1500 hour goal. Not that it will, but potentially/ theoretically it can take 15 years even though I’m pouring $17k to $20k a year. That’s why, I find it impressive that she started at 34 and then 3 years later or so landed a regional, albeit not at 1500 hours which I think she just hit 6 months ago as of August 2020 ( also, I’m sorry that she got laid off) but still, 4 years to 1500 ; that’s about 375 hours a year or 7.2 hours a week. I know it doesn’t work like that , it’s not as clean but but let’ just say 7.2 hours per week x $150 per hour for the usage of the plane that’s $1080 per week.

The Alaska Airline pilots should have used the throttles (engine power makes airplanes go up and down elevator is for slow and fast) to go land that plane. Edwards. Next the mechanics on the ground were worse than useless they were using the wrong lube on the jack screw and any one that knows about jack screws you will not clear it by running it back and forth. So these two pilots turn the passengers into test passengers they did not sign up for nor vote on that. Why test fly over the Pacific ocean in case we make the plane do something wrong. For more info go to the court case on this disaster.
@buckmurdock2500
@buckmurdock2500 3 жыл бұрын
Well it's so unfortunate you were not in the cockpit to sort that out for them. Who'd a thunk when the stabilizer jackscrew stripped, and the stab went well beyond the design limit of travel, all the pilots had to do was adjust the throttles and make a miraculous landing.
