When Duffy first came out and in all the hotels each night they played the story of Duffy, my teen brother and my dad got sick of it and started calling him Dumpy. Later that trip I got a Duffy and I love him so much because he is the cutest thing and the men in my family still laugh at me eight years later 😂 thank you so much Dan for making this awesome video! I was a Character Attendant in Epcot around 2009/2010 and I did a lot of Duffy shifts. He’s THE BEST! All the Japanese guests came with stars in their eyes to meet him, carrying the most mind blowing merchandise I’ve ever seen! Duffy and his friends are a great group of characters that really talks about the parks, I have a lot of great memories with him and I hope US gets into the Duffy hype somehow. I would DIE for Gelatoni and Olu meet and greet and merchandise in Epcot

AGREE. Duffy in Pumpkin costume was my FAVORITE!! One of my most treasured memories of one of the disney race weekends was a picture i took with Duffy. I was limping around the parks post marathon looking like a sad little penguin but dang it I was going to waddle over to Duffy and he was SO sweet to me. Made a huge to do about my medal and I am just CHEESING up that picture. Grinning ear to ear bc I was getting hugs from Duffy in a pumpkin costume and all was right with the world. When I was little it was the first or second time I went to Disney I got Duffy, I loved him so much but HATED dressing him up (costumes were not soft enough for me). This was in 2013 I think and I was 6. 3 years later I got Shellimay. Anyways we went to Aulani in 2019 and I saw all the other Duffy friends and the Last day of the trip I got the stuffed animals of Olu, Gelatoni, and Stella Lou. My brother looked at me like I was crazy but I loved them. Couple weeks later Cookie came out in Hawaii and I was sad. I got a personal shopper in Hong Kong to get me a Cookie Ann plush and send it here. It took months but was so happy to finally have her. I still have the same Duffy and he is a little flatter than everyone else but he and cookie are my favorite.

i will never understand why duffy wasn’t more popular in america. i didn’t get mine when they first came out, i got mine when he made a comeback and was sold at dca. i loved him!!! i took him everywhere and would dress him up. i had a woody costume, the og sailor costume, and a stitch costume. ugh i wish they would bring him back :(

Hey, United States person here! I actually remember when they pushed Duffy hardcore over at Disney World. Even after they stopped having him though, the televisions on Disney property had a channel that would play Duffy's origin story at certain hours for bedtime. Because I have a little brother, we'd watch Duffy's story every night that we weren't out for fireworks. They had it up until my last trip in 2019, and I'm sad it's fine. Knowing that Duffy has friends now, I want them! Gelatoni is basically my spirit animal! Thanks for covering this.

You should do a video on Pal Mickey. To my knowledge, there is no youtube video discussing the history of this obscure item. It was a plush of Mickey Mouse that you would take around the park with you, and the plush had a speaker in it so that Mickey could say specific things depending onnwhich park you were at/ride you were on. They sold them for some ridiculously high price, and even aloud you to rent them from your resort for a day. I wanted one so bad, but my mom wouldnt spend the absurd chunk of change they asked for it. She did let me rent one for a day and it....barely worked. Lol. They didnt last super long. But yea, would love to see a video on this somewhat obscure piece of disney park history

Okay I don’t want to overstate this...but this is the BEST disney parks related video ever made. I have been a fan of Duffy since moment one. Since he was the Disney Bear. I have that first book. I have a turquoise Disney Bear. I loved the sailor narrative. I have a group of disney friends who had little girls who lived for Duffy. They dressed him in custom made princess dresses. 😂 it was brilliant!! I never missed a meet and greet opportunity with Duffy when i was in Epcot. I glimpsed a couple from Japan one day with those incredible backpacks COVERED in what i now know to be Duffy and Shellie May “badges” with that kind of total dedication you don’t find in US parks. I was fascinated and i *might have* stalked them a little bit just to behold the Duffy greatness explosion. They made their way into one of the Duffy dedicated spaces and WIGGED OUT over the Duffy display. They left with two bags STUFFED with Duffy clothing and merchandise and they were asking about Shellie May. The CM had no idea who they were referring to. It was kind of sad. (Note-i was not stalking them really. We just happened to be in the same space...i swear! *ahem*). The disney parks missed such an opportunity with Shellie May. It took her FOREVER to come to the disney parks. I think she would have been wildly popular had they given her any consideration. As I had been a fan from the get go I was well aware of her. I also had a very good friend from college (and fellow Disney fanatic) who was working in Japan who gave me all the Duffy inside info. She sent me a Shellie May all the way from Tokyo! Shellie May arrived in all her adorable glory wearing a pair of ruffled underpants and a burlap skirt...but no shirt...very Donald Duck in reverse. But she was beautiful and I loved her immediately. When Shellie May finally did arrive at disney world it was with very little fanfare. She was quite small in comparison to my Tokyo DisneySEA Shellie May. She was an odd sort of muted raspberry-ish color and she was nekkid. Just fur. She did have a sad little bow. But that’s it. There was no joy. It wasn’t too long after that Duffy began disappearing. His meet and greet in Epcot was removed. And my heart was broken. I kept up my spirits through the pictures my Japan connection would send from her trips to DisneySEA. Which is how I met Gelatoni. And StellaLou. Then something incredible happened. My amazing friend traveled to Hong Kong one weekend for work. Of course she visited Hong Kong Disney while she was there!! It was then that I was introduced to Cookie. I could not get over the cuteness. I was absolutely smitten with her big green eyes and sweet face and she BAKES. That’s my jam!!! Said amazing friend sent me a Cookie of my very own (and a backpack dangle of sweet Cookie). I could NOT get over her precious adorable squishiness. Her little puffy bakers hat. Those green eyes. Just next level. In love. Okay...longest comment ever. I will end with a little tidbit of information. Which I’m sure you know...Cookie’s name was changed I believe in 2019...to Cookie Ann. Due to the fact that Shellie May and Stella Lou have middle names and they felt Cookie needed more flow. (I blame this on the fact that Cookie is now available in Tokyo DisneySEA as part of the crew and Cookie just sounded kind of...flat. Everyone loves a middle name...) OH and I also love me some Olu. Ordered him the second he hit Shop Disney. (I wanted to go directly to Hawaii to adopt him but my husband did not feel that a trip to Hawaii was warranted simply bc of Olu...which I find to be a seriously lacking argument. 🤷🏻‍♀️) Thank you for highlighting sweet Duffy. I will travel to DisneySEA one day when the world rights itself and i will revel in the Glory that is Duffy and Friends. (I also have Tiippy the Seagull...a lesser known friend of Duffy...but not in the gang really. He’s a mail carrier so he’s busy...). Best. Video. Ever. ❤️ thank you.

Oh man, I absolutely LOVE Duffy. I remember being in Disney World for my 10th birthday. One night my Dad was browsing through the channels until we came upon the Duffy nightly bedtime story. The next day I went to EPCOT to get my own Duffy, and I was hooked ever since. I'm 21 next month and I STILL have my Duffy to this day (I even loved him so much that he became the basis for my internet persona lol). There is another Duffy friend named TippyBlue the Seagull. He doesn't get a lot of attention because there aren't very many toys of him, and there aren't any outfits you can dress him up in. But he does appear in the Duffy show at Tokyo DisneySea.

I love Duffy, sadly as an American it's super hard to buy Duffy merch without it being super expensive. (Well maybe except the bears and outfits.) Thankfully I am big into pin trading and I always buy pins in bulk before going to the Parks. It was through that (and Duffy not being very popular with Americans) I was able to score. Through bulk buying and pin trading I have gotten multiple Duffy pins, a couple of Shelly Mae pins and even a Stella Lou and Gelatoni pin. So while my sister collects Chip and Dale I collect Duffy and I look forward to adding to my collection when I go back in a couple of weeks.

I wonder how common custom Duffy outfits are. I had an American Girl doll for a while, and my grandmother had no trouble finding patterns for the dimensions of them that were labeled as for generic 12 inch dolls. You could get new outfits for your Duffy without going to the park and/or undercutting their retail price, as well as making something you're interested in that Disney might not be. Dress up your Duffy in cosplay for non-Disney properties. Put him in a historically accurate kimono. What's cooler than going to the parks with a Duffy in a unquie outfit, going to the parks in a matching Duffy outfit. She's a huge fan of Mickey and Disney, but even more than that she loves teddy bears!! I met Duffy and he was so cute at Tokyo Disney Sea! It was on a day his merch dropped for the 2019 Christmas Season so I could get close to Peg's. Pro tip buy vintage dsney merch in Nakano broadway in Tokyo. I got a tiny duffy key chain for 500 y when in the park they were 2800 y. You can also buy 2nd hand disney merch in Akihabara too .

They tried to introduce him in Disneyland Paris by retheming the Storybook Store down Main Street U.S.A to only sell Duffy Merch, but due to a lack of interest this eventually phased out and is now a generic store once again. He is still seen in many of the seasonal parades, but no longer has a permanent meet and greet. We met him once a few years back since we felt sorry for him as he had no queue and looked sad haha! Him and Shellie May often have meet and greets at special Annual Pass events though as there is still a small dedicated fandom! :)

I have a Duffy! I got him at Disney World right before he stopped being sold there. I didn't actually know of him until seeing that cartoon about the story of Minnie creating him for Mickey to take with him to sea that was showing on the TV at the resort.

The first time I saw Duffy was when I went to the parks after being away for a couple years, and I just walk into a gift store and it's showing "Mickey's Best Friend Duffy!" and it has all the costumes and an animated ad and acting like he was always there and I swore I was losing my mind

Oh, dear god. He made a video on Duffy, this is the happiest day of my life now, dude. I remember collecting every Duffy plush ever since they remastered him in epcot, ever since I was 2-3 years old. My first Duffy was a gift from my grandparents, and I freaking loved it. I still have all of the ones I collected to this day. And hell, Duffy in a way, made me the person I am. My YT channel's name is inspired off of Duffy. Hell, even my old roblox account was named after it. It's weird to think that a stuffed bear would leave an impact in my life so much.
